Soil column experiments were evaluated effects of silver nanoparticles (i.e., 0, 2.5, 5, and 10 mg/L) on the microbial viability which is strongly associated with the degradation of organic matter, pharmaceutically active compounds(PhACs) and biological oxidation of nitrogenous compounds during river bank filtration. The addition of silver nanoparticles resulted in almost no change in the aqueous matrix. However, the intact cell concentration decreased with addition of silver nanoparticles from 2.5 to 10 mg/L, which accounted for 76% to 82% reduction compared to that of control (silver nanoparticles free surface water). The decrease in adenosine triphosphate was more pronounced; thus, the number and active cells in aqueous phase were concurrently decreased with added silver nanoparticles. Based on the florescence excitation-emission matrix and liquid chromatograph - organic carbon detection analyses, it shows that the removal of protein-like substances was relatively higher than that of humic-like substances, and polysaccharide was substantially reduced. But the extent of those substances removed during soil passage was decreased with the increasing concentration of silver nanoparticles. The attenuation of ionic PhACs ranged from 55% to 80%, depending on the concentration of silver nanoparticles. The attenuation of neutral PhACs ranged between 72% and 77%, which was relatively lower than that observed for the ionic PhACs. The microbial viability was affected by silver nanoparticles, which also resulted in inhibition of nitrifiers.
When thin slits (e.g., $1mm{\times}10mm$) of maize (Zea mays) coleoptiles were floated on a buffer, they spontaneously curved outward because of unbalanced tissue tension between inner and outer faces. Exogenously applied auxin induced inward curvature of the thin strip of the maize coleoptile in a dose-dependent manner. This bioassay system was used to screen endogenous substances that work together with auxin. In methanol extract of maize coleoptiles including the leaves inside, Active fractions that promote the auxin-induced inward curvature of maize coleoptile slices were found. The curvature-enhancing activity of the extract was not related to energy supply. The active substances were adsorbed to $C_{18}$ cartridges even at pH 10 and eluted in two fractions by 50% and 80% methanol. These substances were named as Curvature-Enhancing Factor-1 (CEF-1) and Curvature-Enhancing Factor-2 (CEF-2), respectively. The CEF-2 was resolved on a reversed phase $C_{18}$ column by HPLC.
The thermal degradation kinetics of alpha-, gamma- and delta-tocopherols was studied during heating at 100, 150 200 and 250$^{\circ}C$ for 5, 15, 30 and 60 min in the absence of oxygen. The tocopherols were separated by HPLC using a reversed phase ${\mu}$-Bondapak C$_{18}$-column with two kinds of elution solvent system in a gradient mode. The kinetics for degradation of ${\alpha}$-, ${\gamma}$- and ${\delta}$-tocopherols was analyzed as a function of temperatures and times. The degradation of tocopherols was described by the first-order kinetics in the absence of oxygen. The rate of tocopherols degradation was dependent on heating temperatures. The degradation rate constants for ${\alpha}$-, ${\gamma}$ and ${\delta}$-tocopherols showed an increasing trend as the heating temperature increased. The magnitude order of the experimental activation energy was ${\delta}$->${\gamma}$->${\alpha}$-tocopherol.
The present study describes an analytical method for the determination of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) in biota samples by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). PBBs are extracted twice from 20 g samples with mixture solvent 40mL acetone and 80mL hexane using ultrasonic agitation for 20 min. Lipids in extracts are degraded by concentrated sulfuric acid and then PBBs are purified with Florisil column. The purified extracts are analyzed by GC/MS-selected ion monitoring mode for the quantitation of PBBs in biota sample. The overall recovery yields of PBBs range between 77 and 111% under these experimental conditions.
In Korea, the production of reclaimed concrete materials has been increased due to the increase in the concrete structures taken down every year. The reclaimed concrete materials have been reused as road materials. However, the studies on their mechanical and environmental properties have been very limited. The recycled rate of the materials is currently low in Korea. This paper presents the investigation of mechanical and environmental properties of the reclaimed concrete materials, as well as the comparisons with those of gravel. For the evaluation of the mechanical and environmental characteristics, following tests were conducted on both reclamed materials and gravel; liquid limit, plasticity index, CBR, sand equivalent test, abrasion test, pH test, and column leaching test. The test results showed that the reclaimed concretes satisfy the requirements for use as roadbase, subbase, and subgrade materials, except base materials. The pH of reclaimed concrete materials was less than 11 and the leaching test results satisfied the regulatory requirement of Waste Management Act in Korea. Based on the investigations, it appears that the reclaimed concrete materials are environmentally safe and applicable for use as road materials.
Using a column of macrorecticular gel beads impregnated with alcohol solution of diphenylcarbarzide (DPC), the enrichment of Cr(Ⅵ) ion in 0.1M sulfuric acid was investigated. The column performance was compared with respect to the types of solid support such as Amberlite XAD and Diaion HP. Diaion HP-20 was found to be most suitable for this purpose. The break through point was increased when increasing the amount of DPC absorbed in the resin and the concentrated sample solution showed higher break through capacity than the dilute one. The extraction of Cr(Ⅵ) was not affected by the presence of 100 ppm Fe(Ⅲ) which amounted to ten times of 10 ppm Cr(Ⅵ) and the presence of other metal ions which amounted to 100 times of 10 ppm Cr(Ⅵ). Because the used gel particles were effectively regenerated with methanol, they were able to be used repeatedly.

Adsorption characteristics of DMMP and IMPF were investigated using dynamic adsorption method. Adsorbate vapor was forced to Pass at fixed flow rate of 4 mg/I through Cu Cr impregnated activated carbon column at several different flow velocities until the effluent concentrations exceeded 4.0$\times$10$^{-5}$ mg/I. The kinetic adsorption capacity, adsorption kinetic constant, and critical bed weight of the activated carbon were determined for DMMP and IMPF vapors by plotting breakthrough time as a function of carbon weight. A mathematical expression was deduced from our experimental data to represent the relationships between kinetic adsorption capacity and flow velocity. According to our experimental results, the lifetime of DMMP was longer than that of IMPF under the same conditions. Their relationship can be expressed empirically as follows: Tb(DMMP) = 0.9825$\times$Tb(IMPF)-15.368
The effect of $Fe^{2+}$ and myoglobin on the oxidative stability of triglyceride molecular species was investigated at $25^{\circ}C$. The molecular species of soybean oil triglycerides were analyzed by capillary column gas chromatography and electron impact ionization mass spectrometry utilizing selected ion monitoring. When $Fe^{2+}$ and myoglobin were added to soybean oil triglycerides, the oxidative stability of each molecular species of triglycerides appeared to decrease in proportion to the increase in the number of double bonds present in the acyl residues, and it was affected by degree of unsaturation of fatty acid when the total degree of unsaturation of triglyceride was the same. But the length of the saturated acyl chain had no influence on the stabilization of unsaturated fatty acid present in the same glyceride when prooxidants were added.
The traditional Korea medical book already recorded various biological activities of the Korean mistletoes. The objective of this study was examine antifungal activities of MeOH extract from the Korean mistletoe through column chromatography on three fungi, such as Tyromyces palustris Endothia nitschkei and Trichophyton rubrum. No mistletoes had anti-fungal activity against T. palusties. Extracts of V. album var. coloratum showed the highest hyphal growth-inhibitory activity against E. nitschkei and leaf extract of this species had higher activity than twig extract. Further fractionation of most active fraction and following antifungal assay showed that its anti-fungal activity might be caused by synergism if its components. It was suggested that Viscum album var. coloratum shows significantly antifungal activities against E. nitschkei and T. rubrum. Further examination is needed to find out more exact active compounds.
