A large tons of spent iron oxide catalyst come from the Styrene Monomer(SM) production company. It is caused to pollute the land and underground water due to the high alkali contents in the catalyst by burying them in the landfill. In order to recycle the spent catalyst, a basic study on the recovery of chromium ion from metal plating wastewater with the spent catalyst was carried out. The iron oxide catalyst adsorbed physically $Cr^{+6}$ in the lower pH 3.0, that is the isoelectric point of the spent catalyst. It was found that the iron oxide catalyst reduced the $Cr^{+6}$ into Cr+3 by the oxidation of ferrous ion into ferric ion on the surface of catalyst, and precipitated as $Cr(OH)_3$ in the higher than pH 3.0. The $Cr^{+6}$ was recovered 2.0∼2.3g/L catalyst in the range of pH 0.5∼2.0, but it was recovered 1.5 g/L catalyst at pH 3.0 of wastewater. The recovery of Cr was increased as the higher concentration in the continuous process, but the flowrates were nearly affected on the Cr recovery.
SMB (simulated moving bed) chromatography is a very useful utility for the separation of binary system. We simulated the separation of L-arabinose and L-ribose from the mixture by using lab-scale 4(1-1-1-1)-zone SMB chromatography. Preliminary experiments of PIM (pulse input method) were performed to measure adsorption isotherms of L-ribose and L-arabinose in $NH_2$ HPLC column, and experimental and simulated results from ASPEN chromatography were compared. To find the most suitable separation condition in SMB, we carried out a simulation in $m_2-m_3$ plane base on the triangle theory and calculated operating parameters (flow rate of four zone, switching time and feed concentration and so on) using ASPEN chromatography under the conditions of linear isotherms obtained from PIM.

The ion exchange resin used to remove total dissolved solids (TDS) is used by being packed in a column, and sufficient contact time between the ionic material and the ion exchange resin is required during the ion exchange process. In this study, the ion exchange resin that exhibits high TDS reduction even with a short contact time through pulverization of the ion exchange resin was characterized. The optimal size of resin considering flowability was over 100 ㎛. The highest pulverizing yield were obtained that 250~500 ㎛ size and 100~250 ㎛ size were 67.3% and 36.9%, respectively. Also, the highest yield and the pulverizing time of 100~500 ㎛ size was 87.1% and 2 minutes, respectively. Under batch test conditions, the time to reach a removal rate of 95% and 99% for 250~500 ㎛ resins was 1.82 and 1.96 times faster than non-pulverized ion exchange resin, respectively. The 100~250 ㎛ resins showed 15.9 times and 6.18 times faster, respectively. Under the column test, a total of 1.74 g of NaCl was removed by non-pulverized ion exchange resins, 1.83 g of NaCl was removed by 250~500 ㎛ resins and 1.63 g of NaCl was removed by 100 and 250 ㎛ resins. As the size of the resin decreased, the capacity slightly decreased. As a result, it was observed that the pulverized ion exchange resins could be a method of achieving high TDS removal performance under short contact time.

This study was conducted to identify an optimal ratio of carbon to nitrogen (C/N ratio) for denitrification of nitrate using molasses as an external carbon source. A series of batch and column tests was conducted using an indigenous bacterium Pseudomonas sp. KY1 isolated from a nitrate-contaminated soil. For the initial nitrate-nitrogen concentration of 100 mg-N/L, batch test results indicated that C/N ratio of 3/1 was the optimal ratio with a relatively high pseudo-first-order reaction constant of $0.0263hr^{-1}$. At C/N ratio of 3/1, more than 80% of nitrate-nitrogen concentration of 100 mg-N/L was removed in 100 hrs. Results of column tests with a flow velocity of 0.3 mL/min also indicated that the C/N ratio of 3/1 was optimal for denitrification with minimizing remaining molasses concentrations. After 172 hrs of column operation (35 pore volumes) with an influent nitrate-nitrogen concentration of 100 mg-N/L, the effluent met the drinking water standard (i.e., 10 mg $NO_3$-N/L).

Fluorine compounds are the essential chemicals for wet processes of semiconductor and LCD production line. Problems of conventional treatments for fluoride wastewater are their high operation costs and low fluoride removal capacity. In this study, cement paste containing various Ca-bearing hydrates such as portlandite, calcium silicate hydrate(CSH), and ettringite was investigated for fluoride removal. The objectives of this study are to assess the feasibility of using cement paste cured mixture of cement and water as an alternative agent for treatment of fluoride wastewater and to investigate fluoride removal capacity of the cement paste. The performance of cement paste was comparable to that of lime in the kinetic test. In column experiment where the effluent fluoride concentrations were below 0.5 mg/L. Then the leached calcium reached the maximum level of 800 mg/L. The nitrate reduced to the level of less than 10 mg/L. Nitrate in the wastewater was exchanged with interlayer sulfate of these cement hydrate LDHs. Phosphate concentration could be reduced to 10 mg/L by forming calcium phosphate. These results indicate that the cement paste generally has advantageous characteristics as an economical and viable substitute for lime to remove fluoride.
The effect of $Fe^{2+}$ and myoglobin on the oxidative stability of triglyceride molecular species was investigated at $25^{\circ}C$. The molecular species of soybean oil triglycerides were analyzed by capillary column gas chromatography and electron impact ionization mass spectrometry utilizing selected ion monitoring. When $Fe^{2+}$ and myoglobin were added to soybean oil triglycerides, the oxidative stability of each molecular species of triglycerides appeared to decrease in proportion to the increase in the number of double bonds present in the acyl residues, and it was affected by degree of unsaturation of fatty acid when the total degree of unsaturation of triglyceride was the same. But the length of the saturated acyl chain had no influence on the stabilization of unsaturated fatty acid present in the same glyceride when prooxidants were added.

Two depsides, medicinal herb products isolated from the methanol extract of Umbilicaria esculenta, inhibited human synovial fluid Phospholipase $A_2\;(PLA_2)$ ($IC_{50}$ of 0.22 and 0.26 mM, respectively). In the course of screening for antiinflammatory compounds from natural products, we successfully isolated two depsides $PLA_2$ inhibitory compounds, Orcinol and methyl orsellinic acid. The compounds were identified as orcinol and methyl orsellinic acid on the basis of various NMR studies including $^1H,\;^{13}C$ and DEPT experiments.
Sand filters are widely used in infiltration systems to manage polluted urban runoff. Clogging, which is mainly caused by the deposition of sediments on the filter media, reduces the filter system's infiltration capacity, which further limits its lifespan and function. The physical, chemical and biological clogging characteristics of sand filter, therefore, need to be known for effective design and maintenance. Physical clogging behavior and variations in the characteristics of sand filters according to different media depths are examined in this paper. The variations were observed from laboratory column infiltration tests conducted in a vertical flow and fluctuating head condition. It can be seen that an increase in filter media depth results in a high sediment removal performance; however, it leads to a shorter lifespan due to clogging. In the choice of filter media depth to be used in field applications, therefore, the purpose of facilities as well as maintenance costs need to be considered. At all filter media depth configurations, premature clogging occurred because sediments of 100~250 μm clogged the top 15% of filter media depth. Thus, scrapping the top 15% of filter media may be suggested as the first operational maintenance process for the infiltration system.
Permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) technology has been focused in contaminated groundwater remediation. It is necessary to select adequate reactive material according to characteristics of contaminant in groundwater. In this research, the reaction between reactive material and heavy metal contaminants was estimated through column test. Reactive material was slag, which has been produced in Gwangyang power plant, and heavy metal contaminants were cadmium, lead and copper. Column test was performed in the condition of 1) single and multi contaminated solution and 2) different initial concentration of cadmium. Retardation factor of cadmium is 3.94 in multi contamination. But that of copper is 40.3 in single and 25 in multi. The difference of retardation between cadmium and copper is due to affinity, resulted from the difference of electronegativity. In multi-contamination, copper effluent concentration was above initial copper concentration and at the same time lead effluent concentration was decreased. This phenomenon was considered that lead extract copper sorbed in slag and then lead was sorbed to the vacant sorption site instead. And as the initial concentration was increased, the retardation factor of cadmium became decreased.
Applicability of CaO and steel slag as stabilizers in the treatment of field and paddy soils near Pungjeong mine contaminated with arsenic and cationic heavy metals was investigated from batch and column experiments. Immobilization of heavy metals was evaluated by TCLP dissolution test. Immobility of heavy metal ions was less than 15% when steel slag alone was used. This result suggests that $Fe_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$, known as the major component of steel slag, have little effect for the immobilization of heavy metal ions due to acidity of TCLP solution. Immobilization of cationic heavy metals was little affected by the ratio of CaO and steel slag while arsenic removal was increased as the ratio of steel slag to CaO increased. In the column test, concentrations of both arsenic and cationic heavy metals in effluents were below the water discharge guideline over the entire reaction period. This result can be explained by the immobilization of cationic heavy metals from the increased pH in soil solution as well as by the formation of insoluble $Ca_3(AsO_4)_2$. From this work, it is possible to suggest that arsenic and cationic heavy metals can be concurrently stabilized by application of both CaO and steel slag.
