Kakao Entertainment's Contents Dominant Strategy : Focusing on Absorptive Capacity and Boundary Spanning (카카오엔터테인먼트의 콘텐츠 지배 전략 : 흡수역량과 경계관리 활동을 중심으로)

  • Kakao M and Kakao page have been merged to form contents corporation, Kakao entertainment. Kakao M has 15 contents management agencies and 4 music labels, in addition to movie and drama productions. Kakao Page currently holds IP rights for about 8,500 content stories. This study explores the relationship between M&A for absorptive capacity and content value chain by considering the factors that determine boundary spanning behaviors. Using the Kakao entertainment in-depth case study as the practical lens, research results of this study are suggested. Kakao's effective M&A activities are critical key factor for absorptive capacity in the entertainment industry and has a strong network with advantage assets. Also, as the contents business becomes even more competitive, Kakao need to venture beyond entertainment boundaries to seize creative opportunities. Kakao entertainment with absorptive capacity and boundary spanning behaviors through M&A and contents value chain best qualified for entertainment dominant strategy.

A Study on The Effects of Spokes-Character Characteristics on Perceived Quality and Brand Attitude (캐릭터의 특성이 지각된 품질과 브랜드 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • Many companies are increasing the use of characters to enhance brand image and brand value. The use of characters in the certain industry is active, however, the research on characters in academia is insufficient. The purpose of this study is to investigate how characteristics of characters affect on consumer's brand attitude and to suggest the guideline companies to concern on brand characters, in especial on designing or licensing them. The results showed that all characteristics of character positively influenced on brand attitude. Among nine characteristics of the character, trust was the most impact and nostalgia was the least impact on brand attitude, respectively. Perceived quality was mediated on in relations between the brand character and brand attitude. In indirect effect, familiarity was the most impact on brand attitude. In sum, we suggested that trust and familiarity of the character are the most weighted characteristics on brand character design strategy.

  • Recently people who enjoy social game via mobile devices significantly are increasing depending on the rapid adoption of smart phones and the development of the network such as LTE. Most of them are enjoying the casual gaming mobile social games that you are able to play easily, but social issues like health problems due to long play time are emerging. The users, however, do not last long because of the simplicity of the game, and there are few people who actually buy game items even though they play it long time. This study has been conducted aiming to overcome such difficulties. This study suggests ways to generate constantly revenue avoiding short-term box-office after the release of mobile social games based on the analysis for market trend and profitability of the mobile social game. In addition, by applying profitability model analyzed to Japan's most successful game practices, this paper suggests the concrete methods about the commitment of the users. For summarizing the main achievements of this paper, providing the latest market information about mobile social games, analysis of profitability, practical implications for the commitment of the users are presented.

  • The most presentative case would be functional evolution of webtoon as a contents business model, which has taken a initiating role in both innovated strategic experiments and outcomes. Most of all, There are the launch of PPS(Page Profit Sharing) sevice in NAVER webtoon, the paid service model implementation in KAKAOpage and potential business as an exclusive application in Lezhin entertainment This study to analyze these phenomina and results can figure out how the business model in the webtoon platform is developed in various fields diversely and what makes this model evolved and extended. Especially, the diversification of the webtoon platform has been received attention since it pursued the grouped spin off through horizontal convergence and transformational expansion among similar platforms, and also this shows that which factors enhance these phenomina to be controled and expanded. On the basis of the result of this study, we try to find the way to connect business vision of the domestic webtoon platform with affiliated business. Furthermore, it proposes the interrelationship between this and the business strategy for overseas in the globalized platform.
