  • One of the fundamental elements in developing mixed reality applications is to effectively analyze and apply the environmental lighting information to image synthesis. In particular, interactive applications require to process dynamically varying lighting sources in real-time, reflecting them properly in rendering results. Previous related works are not often appropriate for this because they are usually designed to synthesize photorealistic images, generating too many, often exponentially increasing, light sources or having too heavy a computational complexity. In this paper, we present a fast light source estimation technique that aims to search for primary light sources on the fly from a sequence of video images taken by a camera equipped with a fisheye lens. In contrast to previous methods, our technique can adust the number of found light sources approximately to the size that a user specifies. Thus, it can be effectively used in Phong-illumination-model-based direct illumination or soft shadow generation through light sampling over area lights.

  • With the aim of developing a smartphone-based point-of-care device that is small, inexpensive, and easy to handle by non-expert, we designed a fluorescence smartscope for counting particles and a DC motor-controlled particle positioning system. Our smartscope can count the number of fluorescent particles and fluorescently-stained white blood cells through a phone camera with an adaptor containing a LED, a ball lens and optical filters and an application running on a smartphone. The motor was controlled wirelessly via Bluetooth with an Android smartphone. We found that axial spinning of a helical microfluidic channel allows arrangement of particles having size similar to the white blood cells. The motor-controlled particle positioning system can minimize time-consuming manual processes and automate sample preparation process and thus, if integrated with the smartscope, it can be used for a point-of-care testing device based on a smartphone.

  • When electron microscope images and selected area diffraction patterns of crystalline materials are being compared, it is important to know for the rotation of the diffraction pattern with respect to the image caused by the magnetic lens in the Electron Microscope. A well-known method to determine this rotation is to use a test crystal of $MoO_3$. But this method of determination of the rotation angle contains an uncertainty of $180^{\circ}$. Thus one has to devise another way to eliminate this uncertainty. In this paper we present a new and simple method of determining this rotation without any complexity. The method involves a process of obtaining LACBED patterns of crystalline materials. For the J2010 electron microscope, the rotation is determined to be $180^{\circ}$ and this angle remains unchanged for changing of the magnification and the camera length.

  • This paper aims to realize the information of a subject existing in a still image with objective values. To attain the goal, this research takes the vanishing point that a 2D still image has as the basis and recomposes the still image into a 3D image using a 3D program. Also, in order to set up the axis of the camera necessary to recompose a 3D image, this paper used the lens angle of view that the image has and floor patterns as well. The 3D image completed in this way can measure the size and distance of all subjects in the floor patterns if the size value of a particular reference subject is known, and through this, it can be possible to acquire basic information of a subject that can be either a criminal or a clue in the images of CCTVs or some criminal scene.

  • Since inkjet printing is being employed in production lines of electronics and display industries, the tack time for inspection of jetting failure has become very important because the throughput of the inkjet printing system can be extended to the maximum limit by adopting a shorter jetting inspection time. The most popular method for inspecting jetting failure involves the use of a linear stage, a high magnification lens, and a charge coupled devicecamera. However, this conventional approach requires approximately 60 s to complete the jetting inspection and might not be suitable for a high-speed reciprocating jetting inspection in endurance tests due to the unwanted mechanical vibration. In this study, a novel concept of an inkjet monitoring module is introduced, which has an overall inspection time of 18 s. For the shorter tack time of jetting inspection, the parameters affecting the tack time are discussed in this paper.

  • X-ray microscopy with synchrotron radiation(SR) might be a useful tool for novel x-ray imaging in the clinical and laboratory settings. Microscopically, it enables us to observe detailed structure of animal organs samples with a great magnification power and an excellent resolution. The phase contrast mechanisms in image by X-ray are described. The phase-contrast X-ray imaging with SR from in-vivo and in-vitro mouse tail, rat nerve and rat lung were obtained with an 8 KeV monochromatic beam. The visual image was magnified using 10x microscope objective lens and captured using an digital CCD camera. The results showed more structural details and high resolution images with SR imaging system than conventional X-ray radiography system. The SR imaging system may have a potential for imaging in biological researches, material applications and clinical radiography.

  • Recently, eye image information has been widely used for iris recognition or gaze detection in biometrics or human computer interaction. According as long distance camera-based system is increasing for user's convenience, the noises such as eyebrow, forehead and skin areas which can degrade the accuracy of eye detection are included in the captured image. And fast processing speed is also required in this system in addition to the high accuracy of eye detection. So, we compared the most widely used algorithms for eye detection such as AdaBoost eye detection algorithm, adaptive template matching+AdaBoost algorithm, CAMShift+AdaBoost algorithm and rapid eye detection method. And these methods were compared with images including light changes, naive eye and the cases wearing contact lens or eyeglasses in terms of accuracy and processing speed.

  • In scanning laser optical tweezers, high speed scanning stages are used to manipulate a laser beam spot. Due to the inertia of the stage, the output scanning signal decreases with increased frequency of the input signal. This discrepancy in the signals is difficult to observe since most of the energy from the laser beam is blocked out to avoid CCD damage. In this paper, we propose two methods to alleviate these problems. Firstly, frequency responses of piezo stages are measured to analyze the signal drops and the input signal is compensated accordingly. Secondly, an overlay of the scanning path is drawn on the live monitoring screen to enhance the visibility of the scanning path. The result is a drop-compensated scanning with clear path view.

  • Existing method of creating Stereoscopy image, creates viewpoint image from the left and right by shooting one object with 2 lens in certain distance. However, in case of 3-D TV using Stereoscopy camera, the necessity to transmit 2 viewpoint images from the left and right simultaneously, increases the amount of bandwidth. Various and more effective alternatives are under discussion. Among the alternatives, DIBR(Depth Image Based Rendering) creates viewpoint images from the left and right using one image and its Depth information, thus decreasing the amount of transmitted bandwidth. For this reason, there have been various studies on Algorithm to create DIBR Image in existing Static Scene. In this paper, I would like to suggest Gaussian Hole-filling solution, which utilizes reverse-depth image to fill the hole naturally, while minimizing distortion of background. In addition, we have analyzed the effectiveness of each Algorithm by comparing and calculating its functions.

  • This paper proposes a decision support system to recognizing retinal diseases. This paper uses a smartphone platform and cloud computing as the base of the system. A microscopic lens is attached int' the smartphone camera to capture the user retinal image for recognizing the user's retinal condition. An application is assembled in computer and then installed in to the smartphone. The application role is to connect between the system in smartphone and system in cloud, the application will send the retinal image to the cloud system to be classified. The paper uses OCFE (optimized classifier based on feature elimination) algorithm as the classifier. The retinal image is trained using combination of two ophthalmology databases DIARETDB1 v2.1 and STARE. Therefore, this system average accuracy is 88%, while the average error rate is 12%.
