Methods We reviewed 8 randomized controlled trials (RCT) of acupuncture treatment in IBS which were published from 2008 to 2018 in PubMed. The acupoints, methods of assessment, treatment, results and adverse events were analyzed. Results There were 8 RCT of acupuncture treatment in IBS. The most commonly used acupoints were 天樞 (ST25), and 上巨虛 (ST37). Frequently used assessments in IBS were Bristol scale, visual analogue scale, IBS-symptom severity score, quality of life, and symptom scale. 3 out of 8 studies, the acupuncture treatment group showed significant effectiveness than that of the control group. Conclusions All of the studies have not shown that the acupuncture treatment was effective in relieving IBS symptoms. More clinical studies are needed to prove the effectiveness of the acupuncture treatment in IBS.

We have analyzed the studies on effect of acupuncture for Autism Spectrum Disorder within randomized controlled trail (RCT) for 6years (from 2010 to 2015). Methods The search database includes Medline, Embase, Cochrane library and CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure). To narrow the search, the following key search terms were used: 'autism or ASD or Asperger's Syndrome or pervasive developmental disorder, acupuncture'. The search was limited to the publication date from 2010 to 2015. 7 control studies in Medlin, Embase, Cochrane library and 5 control studies in CNKI were selected for analysis. Results and Conclusions 1. The acupuncture and rehabiliation treatment is more effective than only acupuncture treatment. Especially, Retention of needling is helpful. 2. It is necessary to set up standard scale in assessment of ASD patients and serum arginine-vasopressin (AVP) can be substitution. 3. Head acupuncture and tongue acupuncture is effective for ASD.

Methods : Thirteen patients with poststroke-hemiplegia were randomized into two groups. Six patients(test group) treated with contralateral acupuncture. The other seven patients(control group) treated with ipsilateral acupuncture. The activity of daily living was measured with a modified barthel index(MBI). The therapy was performed one a day for 3 weeks. Results : In terms of improvement of activity of daily living, the test group showed statistically meningful increase after 1 week treatment. but the control group showed statistically meningful increase after 2 weeks(p<0.05). In terms of score of MBI, the groups showed no statistically meningful difference after 3 week treatment. Conclusions : These results support that contralateral acupuncture therapy has almost same effectness compared with ipsilateral acupuncture therapy in improvement of the activity of daily living of poststroke-hemiplegic patients.

  • Objectives : This review is to summarize and assess the effects of acupuncture on parasympathetic nervous system(PNS). Methods and Materials : We searched two electronic databases (CNKI, PubMed) for the articles published until Oct. 2010. The randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and uncontrolled clinical trials (UCTs) were considered to be reviewed. We selected four RCTs, seven UCTs and one article which conducted both RCT and UCT, and reviewed them. The quality of RCTs was also assessed with Cochrane criteria. Results : There were four RCTs which reported acupuncture enhanced PNS, and one RCT reported acupuncture reduced PNS. Four UCTs reported acupuncture enhanced PNS, three UCTs reported acupuncture reduced PNS and one UCT reported there was no remarkable change of PNS after acupuncture. Conclusions : Although the majority of reviewed articles showed acupuncture enhance PNS, it is hard to conclude clearly how acupuncture affects PNS due to insufficient quality of trials. Therefore, more trials with strict condition need to be conducted to obviously identify the effects of acupuncture on PNS.
