This experimental study has been carried out to investigate the reduction in side friction of open caisson using air-jet method. For this study, the large size caisson having air-pockets was used. This caisson was used as substructure of bridge. By using air-jet method, settlement time was decreased and even settlement was reached to the depth which conventional methods could not be. We found that the side resistance decreases to less then half the expected value. In addition to these merits, the air-jet method can result in self-weight settlement without applying additional load. Also the open caisson damage caused by blasting can be prevented with this method.
In this research, the characteristics of settlement and consolidation behavior of the composite ground formation reinforced by Recycled-Aggregate Porous Concrete Pile (RAPP) were evaluated by conducting a series of laboratory chamber tests. The effect of settlement reduction was verified by comparing the settlement of the composite ground formation with that of the unreinforced ground. In addition, it was studied how much the RAPP can accelerate consolidation in assessment of the degree of consolidation in the composite ground formation. The amount of settlement reduction was decreased with an increase on surcharge pressure, but it was greater than that of the SCP method. The RAPP and the SCP showed a similar rate of consolidation.
The prediction of landfill settlement is very important for managing land properly, especially in small national land like Korea. It is difficult to express settlement using the consolidation theory because biochemical decomposition is main reason of settlement, and organic materials in landfill are decomposed far long time. In this study, LFG (Landfill Gas) generation characteristics are studied to find long-term settlement analysing model landfills. Two lysimeters are made; one is leachate recycled, and the other is not leachate recycled. The relationship between gas generation and settlement is analysed as a function of time. A mathematical gas generation model is suggested to predict long-term settlement due to biodegradation, and correction coefficient is recommended for long term settlement through model tests. The leachate recirculation system is more effective to accelerate landfill settlement. The appropriate coefficients of gas correction for non-recycled leachate model are 1.4 and 1.7 for recycled system from tests showing 22% of acceleration.

Many burial sites were constructed to suppress the spread of foot and mouth disease during outbreak. Defected burial sites were removed when leachate leak is presumed and carcasses were moved to the circular storage tanks. However, carcasses were not decomposed possibly due to low water content, low microbial activities, and poor mixing. In this research, storage tank containing carcasses in it was modified to bioreactor to accelerate stabilization. Liquids with nutrients were added and circulated to maintain the optimum water content while extraneous microorganisms were augmented. Settlement was used as the primary index for assessing stabilization rate, and the consolidation theory was utilized to estimate the expected final settlement. 30% of carcasses is expected to be decomposed and removed from the storage tank for five years of bioreactor operation.
In this paper, a series of laboratory chamber tests was carried out to evaluate promoting consolidation of a porous concrete pile fabricated with recycled aggregates (RAPP) method for soft ground improvement. Performing the laboratory chamber tests for the RAPP, characteristics of the surface settlement with time and the consolidation time were compared with those of SCP and GCP provided by You (2009) under the same experimental condition. In addition, the experimental results were compared with the numerical analysis in this study. As a test result, the effects for settlement reduction in both the primary and the secondary consolidation and promoting consolidation by RAPP were prominent comparatively.
In this paper, a series of model tests were performed in laboratory to evaluate promoting consolidation of compaction pile methods for soft ground improvement. For the model tests, composite soil samples that have 10% replacement area ratio were prepared by using sand, gravel, and sandy gravel for the materials of compaction piles. After loading to each composite soil sample, the excess pore pressure dissipation and settlement were investigated. In addition, the behavior of clay mixed with each compaction pile was also monitored at the end of consolidation to evaluate clogging phenomenon. As a test result, the effects for decreasing settlement and promoting consolidation by GCP were prominent, and the mixed clay was not monitored in all of the three compaction piles.
In this research, the value of consolidation index was investigated. The range of the investigated standard deviation was analyzed and the deviation based settlement was calculated. Also, the compression index, which is the effect of the uncertainty in the ground was analyzed using the flimsy ground construction method. The settlement behavior in each embankment compaction stage was analyzed by applying the precompression load method, drainage expediting method, and displacement method through numerical analysis. In addition to the above, the settlement behavior was studied by analyzing the Piled Raft method which is stable for long term settlement. As a result, the final settlement amount based on average analysis results was that the settlement based on each of the average interpretation value, mean value of the maximum and minimum value and average compression index was different. The result of the comparison shows the difference in variation coefficient by the difference in time. Amongst them, the Piled Raft method shows the most consistent variation coefficient regardless of time and it also was least affected by the compression index of uncertainty.
The conventional settlement prediction method is not appropriate to model landfill settlement because it is very complex phenomenon. Biodegradation needs to be considered for long-term settlement since landfills are comprised of various organic materials and soils. As organic materials are decomposed, they directly influences on settlement producing LFG(Landfill Gas). Therefore, mathematical settlement prediction model is proposed based on the generated gas volume. As one of stabilization methods, leachate recycling system is adopted to model tests. Two model tests; one is leachate recycled, the other is non-recycled, are componented with proposed model and analysed regarding gas generation and settlement. The proposed mathematical model requires correction coefficients of 1.4 and 1.7 for non-recycled model and recycled, respectively. The recycled model showed 22% increase of long-term settlement more than the non-recycled model.
Recently, engineering problems such as long-term settlement, differential settlement, and the resultant structural damage, have been frequently reported at construction sites. Use of Sand Compaction Piles(SCP) and Granular Compaction Piles(GCP) are good at remedying existing problems, improving bearing capacity and promoting consolidation. However, such compaction piles have the potential for clogging, which would limit their usability. Investigations into the potential for clogging in SCP, GCP, and GCP mixed with sand has not been thoroughly conducted and is the objective of this current study. Large scale direct shear tests were performed on sections of SCP, GCP, and sand mixed GCP to evaluate bearing capacity. Discrete Element Method analyses were conducted with PFC3D and Finite Element Analyses were conducted with MIDAS GTS to propose an algorithm to help reduce clogging in the granular compaction piles. Results from the large scale direct shear test and multiple simulations suggest a 70% gravel and 30% sand mixing ratio to be optimal for bearing capacity and reducing clogging.
