Stone column or granular compaction pile have been used in widely during the several decades as a technique to reinforce soft cohesive soils and increase bearing capacity, accelerate consolidation settlement of the foundation soil. The bearing capacity of the granular compaction pile is governed mainly by the lateral confining pressure mobilized in the native soft soil to restrain bulging collapse of the granular pile. Therefore, the technique becomes unfeasible in soft, compressible clayey soils that do not provide sufficient lateral confinement. This paper presents the main results of numerical study of granular compaction pile which is partly mixed with lean concrete. 3D finite element analyses are performed with composite reinforced foundations by both granular compaction pile and partly mixed granular compaction pile with lean-mixed concrete. Finally, a regression formula for calculating settlement reduction coefficients is proposed in this study by using numerical analysis results and applicability of the proposed method is identified by a series of parametric study about settlement reduction coefficients.
Although the Granular Compaction Pile (GCP) has been used for many decades, several failures still occur such as bulging, shear failure and other phenomena, indicating that more refined study is needed. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the stress concentration ratio for both area replacement ratio and shear strength of soil through literature review and numerical analysis. Numerical analysis using the finite element program ABAQUS has been performed for the composite ground with GCP. The behavior stress and settlement of composite ground have been analyzed for both the area replacement ratio (10~40%) and shear strength of soil (25~75 kPa). As a result of numerical analysis, as the soil strength and area replacement ratio increased, the average stree related coefficient and stress concentration ratio for depth tended to decrease, and stress related coefficient of upper layer tend to decrease equally, but the stress concentration ratio decreased. Therefore, tendency that the value in th upper layer differs from the value in other depths was displayed. Care should be taken because it is possible to make mistakes in designing the entire composite ground with the values measured in the upper layer. Also, the settlement reduction factor was compared with the existing equation and numerical analysis. And the value obatined from the existing equation and numerical analysis are similar.
In general, sand compaction pile(SCP) method and gravel compaction pile(GCP) method have been mainly used to reinforce soft soils such as soft clay or loose sandy ground. But the sand compaction pile method has problems such as lack of sand supply and destroying the nature while collecting sand, the gravel compaction pile method has a problem such as decreased permeability of the drainage material due to clogging. Recently, the study to replace sand with bottom ash which has similar engineering properties with sand is in active. As a fundamental research on bottom ash mixture compaction pile utilizing bottom ash, its behavioral characteristics depending on granular materials and replacement ratio has been simulated numerically. In particular, Settlement Reduction Ratio(SRR) according to the distance from the center of pile was calculated. The main findings were as follows. Change values of Mixture Compaction Pile's SRR according to granular materials showed similar patterns and stiffness of the composite soil is increased depending on the replacement ratio so SRR showed decreased patterns. Especially, when the replacement ratio is in 20~40%, it increase significantly. When the replacement ratio is over 40%, it increase slowly. When considering the economics, 30~40% replacement ratio is appropriate.
Stone columns is ground improvement method which is composed of compacted gravel or crushed stone inserted into the soft ground consisting of loose sand and clay by replacement method. Generally stone columns are constructed in silty clay, above 70% replacement rate for increasing the bearing capacity and shear strength. Low replacement stone columns method is limited below 30% at replacement rate-premising strength increase of clay ground is estimated efficiently. This study, laboratory model tests were conducted to investigate the consolidation drainage promotion and shear strength increase effect in soft ground with replacement rate by stone columns. The settlement reduction effect and settlement reduction coefficients increase with increasing the replacement rate in composite ground. The results of model tests indicate that consolidation promotion effect is proved. The increasing strength of composite ground was verified by vane shear tests.

The soil structures settle down continuously under cyclic dynamic loading after opening railway lines. This study examined the characteristics of the settlement and stiffness of cement-treated soils with the change in the content of fines under cyclic dynamic loading. Eighteen cases of the test were carried out with the changes in the fines content of soils, cement content, and curing days. Based on the test results, cement-treated soils containing more than 3% of cement could decrease settlement sufficiently even with a high portion of fines under cyclic dynamic loading. In addition, the elastic and plastic settlements could be reduced using 3 to 4% cement to the level of 1/4 and 1/6, respectively. In the viewpoint of stiffness, the resilient modulus of cement-treated soils increases with increasing cement content. Using more than 3% of cement, the 80MPa compaction stiffness standard for the upper subgrade of railways was satisfied, even with 40% of fines content of soils.

The RAR (Reinforced Abutment for Railways) is an economical abutment to reduce the settlement of a transitional zone and horizontal displacement of an abutment by constructing backfill before the abutment. In this paper, the performance of the RAR depending on the pile installation was evaluated using 2D (Dimensional) finite element analysis and compared with the existing abutment (with 5 rows pile). Numerical analysis showed that increasing pile installation is more effective in reducing horizontal displacement and earth pressure than settlement of the transitional zone. The horizontal displacement and earth pressure of the RAR was approximately 26~37% and 59~83% compared to the existing abutment by changing the pile installation. More pile installation led to a greater reduction of the horizontal displacement and earth pressure of the RAR. In addition, the horizontal earth pressure of RAR is influenced considerably by the reinforcement, pile, foundation, and stiffness of the ground.
The aim of this study is to analyze the mechanical characteristics and settlement feature of the composite ground with structural form changes. The laboratory model test is a soil tanker to be contained with clay and grid form improved soil, which is conducted in total 9 case with the uniaxial compressive strength of improved soil and replacement ratio of improved soil. The numerical analysis for variation of stress distribution ratio with depth was performed in the same conditions which are the laboratory model test. As a result, stress distribution ratios in mid and high replacement ratio are increasing and settlement is decreasing, except low replacement ratio. This study is presented for form effect ratio and settlement reduction factor with change of structure form, which is able to be helpful in further research and reference for change of structural forms at composite ground.
In the previous studies, settlement behaviors of granular compaction piles have generally been analyzed with an evaluation of the settlement reduction factor based on tile load-sharing ratio and the replacement ratio. In this approach, however, since the reinforced ground with granular compaction piles is simplified as the composite ground, only the difference of a relative vertical strength between piles and soils is taken into account without reflecting lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles. In the companion research paper, the method of estimating the settlement of granular compaction piles was proposed by synthetically considering a vertical strength of the ground, lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles, the strength of pile materials, a pile diameter, and an installation distance of the pile. In the presented study, to validate a propriety of the previously proposed method, large scale field load tests and three dimensional numerical analyses are performed. The results are analyzed in detail and compared with the predicted settlements by the proposed method. Finally, a simple method to estimate the settlement of granular compaction piles is suggested for an easy application of the practical design.
The improved turnout system is developed to speed-up the pre-existing railroad. The research has been actively carried out far the improved turnout system and the impact factor is estimated using the data sets achieved from the dynamic wheel-load field tests in both the conventional and the improved turnout system. In this study, the track performance and roadbed behavior are examined for the conventional and improved turnout system using the estimated impact factor. Dynamic wheel load and rail pressure are evaluated to assess the track performance. Roadbed stress and settlements are estimated using numerical analysis. Additionally, the stability of roadbed is estimated in soft roadbed condition influenced by the weather effects and cyclic train loading. The results show that dynamic wheel load, rail pressure, roadbed stress, and roadbed settlements in the improved turnout system substantially decrease compared with those in the conventional turnout system.

Researches on the induced trench method using compressible materials such as clay, mud, straw, or EPS block have been performed to reduce the load acting on buried conduits under a high fill. The induced trench method has the problems that the arching area due to the compressible arching material is one dimensional or localized in a narrow zone. The main purpose of this study is to solve the problems of the induced trench method mentioned above. The various types of laboratory model tests are conducted to find the effects of the variations of EPS block width, multilayer application, soil density, and diameter of the flexible steel pipe. A series of model tests was conducted to evaluate the reduction of earth pressure on conduits using EPS block. Based on modeling test it is found that the magnitude of vertical earth pressure on conduits was reduced about 60% compared with conventional flexible conduit systems.
