침탄 처리 소재의 표면 분석을 위한 나노압입시험법의 응용 (Application of Nanoindentation Technique for Characterizing Surface Properties of Carburized Materials)

  • In the automobile and shipbuilding industries, various materials and components require superior surface strength, excellent wear resistance and good resistance to repeated loads. To improve the surface properties of the materials, various surface heat treatment methods are used, which include carburizing, nitriding, and so on. Among them, carburizing treatment is widely used for structural steels containing carbon. The effective carburizing thickness required for materials depends on the service environment and the size of the components. In general, however, there is a limit in evaluation of the surface properties with a standardized mechanical test method because the thickness or cross-sectional area of the carburized layer is limited. In this regard, the nanoindentation technique has lots of advantages, which can measure the mechanical properties of the material surface at the nano and micro scale. It is possible to understand the relationship between the microstructural change in the hardened layer by carburizing treatment and the mechanical properties. To be spread to practical applications at the industrial level, in this paper, the principle of the nanoindentation method is described with a representative application for analyzing the mechanical properties of the carburized material.

울산 하대고분 출토 민고리자루칼의 재질 특성과 환두부 제작 방법 (Metallurgical Characteristics and Manufacturing Techniques of Ring-Pommel Swords Excavated from Ancient Tombs in Hadae, Ulsan)

  • 울산 하대유적에서 출토된 민고리자루칼을 방사선 비파괴조사와 미세조직 분석으로 환두부의 제작 방법과 재질 특성을 살펴보았다. 방사선 비파괴 조사법으로(X-ray, CT) 내부 구조를 확인한 결과, 제작 방법의 기본형식은 철 단일 소재로 칼 끝부터 환두부까지 일체형으로 제작한 단조품임을 확인하였다. 또한 미세조직 분석을 통해 살펴 본 제작기술은 '순철-형태가공, 순철-형태가공-침탄, 강-형태가공-담금질'의 세 가지 유형으로 분류할 수 있었다. 민고리자루칼 5점 중 4점의 환두부는 약 0.7% 내외인 공석강 정도의 탄소 함량을 가진다. 특히 환두부에서는 손잡이보다 증가된 탄소함량을 보이는데, 이는 손잡이 끝 부분을 세장한 형태로 만들고 둥글게 구부리는 과정에서 인성을 부여하기 위한 침탄 처리의 결과로 추정된다. 길이 60 cm 이하의 민고리자루칼 1점은 날 부위에 집중시킨 담금질을 통해 강한 인성을 부여하여 무기로서의 용도를 극대화시켰다. 반면 75 cm를 넘는 4점의 날 부위에서는 담금질 조직인 마르텐사이트가 관찰되지 않았다. 하지만 칼등 대비 날 부위의 탄소함량 증가나 결정립의 미세화는 실용기로서 사용이 가능했음을 보여준다. 2C말에서 4C초로 편년되는 울산 하대고분군 출토 민고리자루칼은 단조기술을 통해 일체형으로 제작하였으며, 사용 목적에 따라 제강, 열처리 기술을 적용하여 칼이 가지는 용도의 효과를 극대화시켜 제작하였다.

  • 플라즈마 이온질화 기술은 특히 스테인리스강의 표면경도 향상을 통한 기계적 성질 개선을 위해 산업 전반에서 널리 사용되고 있다. 또한 저온처리가 가능할 뿐만 아니라 담금질 강, 가스 질화 또는 침탄에 비해 변형이 적으며, 높은 표면 경도와 부식 저항성을 향상시키는 이점이 있다. 많은 연구자들에 의해 $450^{\circ}C$ 이하의 온도에서 플라즈마 이온질화 처리 시 expanded austenite(S-상)에 의해 부식 저항성이 향상되는 것으로 나타났다. 이때 대부분의 실험은 HCl 또는 NaCl과 같은 염화물 용액에서 실시되었다. 그러나 전기화학적인 요인으로서 염화물 용액과 천연해수 사이에는 차이가 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 304 스테인리스강에 대하여 다양한 온도에서 플라즈마 이온질화 처리 후 천연해수 용액에서 전기화학적 특성 분석을 통해 결과적으로 내식성이 가장 우수한 최적의 플라즈마 이온질화 처리 온도 조건을 규명하였다.

가스 질화침탄처리한 탄소강의 화합물층 성장 및 부식특성에 미치는 $CO_2$함량의 영향 (Effect of $CO_2$ Content on the Growth and Corrosion Characteristics of the Compound Layers in Gaseous Nitrocarburized Carbon Steels)

  • This study has been performed to investigate the effect of $CO_2$ content on the growth characteristics of the compound layer, porous layer and corrosion characteristics of carbon steels after gaseous nitrocarburizing in $70%-NH_3-CO_2-N_2$ at $580^{\circ}C$ for 2.5 hrs. The results obtained from the experiment were the thickness of the compound and porous layers increased with increasing $CO_2$ contents. At the same fixed gas composition the thickness of the compound and porous layer increased with increasing carbon content of the specimens. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that compound layer was mainly consisted of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}(N,C)$ and ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4N$ as the increased with $CO_2$ contents in atmosphere, compound layer was chiefly consisted of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}(N,C)$ phase. With increasing $CO_2$ content and total flow rate in gaseous nitrocarburizing, the amount of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}(N,C)$ phase in the compound layer was increased. The current density of passivity decreased with increasing $CO_2$ content due to the development of porous layer at the out most surface of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}(N,C)$.

Ti-6Al-4V 합금의 미세조직 및 크리프 특성에 미치는 플라즈마 침탄 처리의 영향 (Improvement of Microstructure and Creep Properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by Plasma Carburization)

  • In order to improve the wear resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, plasma carburization treatment was newly carried out without consumption of its good specific strength and fatigue life over the temperature. Effect of the plasma carburization was analyzed and compared with the non-treated alloy by microstructural observation, structure characterization and mechanical test. The plasma treated alloy formed a carburized layer of about $150{\mu}m$ in depth from the surface, where a fine and hard particles of TiC and $V_4C_3$ were homogeneously dispersed through the layer. The steady-static creep behaviors of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, using the constant stress creep tester, were investigated over the temperature range of $510{\sim}550^{\circ}C$(0.42~0.44Tm) and the stress range of 200~275 MPa. Stress exponent(n) was decreased from 9.32 of non-treatment specimen to 8.95 of carburized, however, the activation energy(Q) increased from 238 to 250 kJ/mol with the same condition as indicated above. From the above results, it can be concluded that the static creep deformation for Ti-6Al-4V alloy was controlled by the dislocation climb over the ranges of the experimental conditions.

저탄소강의 질화침탄과 산화처리시 분위기 변화에 따른 조직 및 부식특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Corrosion Properties and Microstructure of the Nitrocarburized and Oxidized Low Carbon Steel according to the Treatment Atmospheres)

  • Nitrocarburizing was carried out with various $CH_4$ gas composition with 4 torr gas pressure at $570^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours and post oxidation was carried out with 100% $O_2$ gas atmosphere with 4 torr at different temperatures for various time. In the case of plasma nitrocarburizing, It is that the ratio of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}$(N, C) and ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4$(C, N), which comprise the compound layer phase, depend on concentrations of $N_2$ gas and $CH_4$ such that when the concentration of $N_2$ and $CH_4$ increased, the ratio of ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4$(C, N) decreased, but the ratio of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}$(N, C) increased. The thickness of compound layer consistently increased as gas concentration increased regardless of $N_2$ and $CH_4$ expect when the concentration of $CH_4$ was 3.5 volume%, it decreased insignificantly. When oxidizing for 15min in the temperature range of $460{\sim}570{^\circ}C$, the study found small amount of $Fe_3O_4$ at the temperature of $460{^\circ}C$ and also found that amounts of $Fe_2O_3$. and $Fe_3O_4$ on the surface and amount of ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4$(C, N) in the compound layer increased as the increased over $460^{\circ}C$, but the thickness of the compound layer decreased. Corrosion resistance was influenced by oxidation times and temperature.

진공침탄을 위한 처리조건 설정에 관한 연구 (A Study on Setting up Condition of Treatment for Vacuum Carburizing)

  • SCM 415 has been vacuum carburized in the carburizing pressure of 60-65kpa and the carburizing temperature of 1233k and 1273k after varied to 0-20 in the ratio of $N_2/C_3H_8$ and then diffusion treated for various times at 1123k. The results obtained from the experiment are as follows. 1. With increasing from 0 to 20 in ratio of $N_2/C_3H_8$ the sooting formation of surface after carburizing considerably decreased. 2. The hardness control and surface carbon content of carburizing surface has been modified by the addition of nitrogen to the propan. 3. The appoximate value of k is indirectry calculated at 1123k which results are obtained to $0.58{\times}10^{-2}(wt.%.S^{-1/2})$. 4. A great deal of propan by addition of nitrogen gas in carburizing gas was possible to saving without considerable change in case hardening depth. 5. The effective carburizing depth range is obtained to 0.8-1.1mm by diffusion temperature of 1123k after carburization at 1273k-3.6ks, and the surface hardness is increased as the increasing of $T_D/T_c$ in our experimental condition, and the maximum hardness as reachin distance from surface is decreased.

CD 침탄 및 Subzero 처리가 STS 304 스테인리스강의 미세조직에 미치는 영향 (Microstructural Changes of STS304 Steel during the Carbide Dispersion (CD) Carburization and Subzero Treatment)

  • Microstructural changes and hardness variations in STS 304 steel have been investigated during the processes of carbide dispersion (CD) carburization; carburization, austenitization, subzero treatment and tempering. The carbon content of the surface layer increased up to maximum 4.0% after carburization, and the content was homogenized with the value of 2.3% to the $95{\mu}m$ from the surface after austenitization. The carbide appeared during CD carburization process was $Cr_7C_3$ type, which was composed network carbides along the austenite grain boundaries, square type carbides in the interior of the grain and fine nano-sized carbides. The fine nano-sized carbides precipitated at the austenitization stage and possibly subzero treatment stage were coarsened after tempering at $200^{\circ}C$, resulting the hardness decrease. The tempered steel without subzero treatment increased hardness with increasing time due to the continuous precipitation of fine carbides during tempering. The nano-sized carbide appeared square type morphology.

AISI 316L stainless steel에 저온 플라즈마 침탄 및 질화처리 시가스조성이 표면특성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Gas Composition on the Characteristics of Surface Layers Produced on AISI316L Stainless Steel during Low Temperature Plasma Nitriding after Low Temperature Plasma Carburizing)

  • The 2-step low temperature plasma processes (the combined carburizing and post-nitriding) offer the increase of both surface hardness and thickness of hardened layer and corrosion resistance than the individually processed low temperature nitriding and low temperature carburizing techniques. The 2-step low temperature plasma processes were carried out for improving both the surface hardness and corrosion resistance of AISI 316L stainless steel. The influence of gas compositions on the surface properties during nitriding step were investigated. The expanded austenite (${\gamma}_N$) was formed on all of the treated surface. The thickness of ${\gamma}_N$ and concentration of N on the surface increased with increasing both nitrogen gas and Ar gas levels in the atmosphere. The thickness of ${\gamma}_N$ increased up to about $20{\mu}m$ and the thickness of entire hardened layer was determined to be about $40{\mu}m$. The surface hardness was independent of nitrogen and Ar gas contents and reached up to about 1200 $HV_{0.1}$ which is about 5 times higher than that of untreated sample (250 $HV_{0.1}$). The corrosion resistance in 2-step low temperature plasma processed austenitic stainless steels was also much enhanced than that in the untreated austenitic stainless steels due to a high concentration of N on the surface.
