Physicochemical Characteristics and Physiological Activities of Naturally Fermented Glasswort (Salicornia herbacea L.) Juice (자연발효 함초액의 이화학적 특성 및 생리활성)

  • We investigated the physicochemical properties and physiological activities of glasswort juice fermented naturally for different periods of time. Glasswort juice fermented for six years (LFGJ) showed higher crude fiber and lower NaCl content than glasswort juice fermented for two years (SFGJ). Fermented glasswort juice contained K, Mg, and Ca as the main minerals, and the mineral content in both SFGJ and LFGJ were similar. The main free amino acids of fermented glasswort juice were determined to be alanine, proline, aspartic acid, and lysine. The leucine and aspartic acid content in LFGJ was higher than that in SFGJ. SFGJ had higher 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS$^+$) radical-scavenging activities than LFGJ. Fermented glasswort juice showed high ACE inhibition and ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibition activities regardless of how long it was fermented. An oral glucose tolerance test was carried out in rats fed diets containing 4% NaCl (control) or 4% NaCl+2% LFGJ (LFGJ). The LFGJ group showed enhanced glucose tolerance compared to the control group.

  • Bench Scale급 건식 가스화기에서 중국 Datong탄과 미국 Alaska Usibelli탄으로부터 생성된 Slag의 구조적인 특성과 화학적인 특성을 조사하였다. Datong slag은 표면이 매끄럽고 검으며 속이 약간 비어 있는 구형을 띄고 있고 Alaska Usibelli탄으로부터의 slag은 속이 조밀하게 차여있는데, 이들 slag의 내부는 Datong, Alaska Usibelli탄 두 경우 다 회분이 결정화된 형상의 특징을 보여주고 있다. 그리고 Cu, Zn외 11가지 중금속이 slag에 다량으로 농축되어 제거되었음을 알 수 있었으며, slag들의 침출여부를 조사하기 위하여 용출시험을 수행한 후 용출액에 대하여 중금속 분석을 한 결과 대부분 중금속들은 검출되지 않았다. 내화재의 주성분인 Cr이 slag에 포함되어 나오는 것으로 측정되었으나 용출시험 결과 검출이 안되어 2차오염에는 전혀 문제가 없음이 입증되었다. 따라서 건식 가스화기로부터 생성된 slag을 재사용할 때, 용출되는 중금속에 관한 2차 환경오염이 유발되지 않을 것으로 확인되었다.

  • In this study, alcohol fermentation condition for production of plum wine was investigated and further, sensory evaluation and nutraceutical properties of the plum wine and liquors were also determined. Ethanol was produced maximally when 5% Saccharomyces cerevisiae was added in red plum juices and fermented at $25^{\circ}C$ for 5 days. Among the red plum wine and various kinds of plum liquors, red plum wine showed the best acceptability and its ACE inhibitory activity, fibrinolytic activity and antioxidant activity were also excellent.

A Study on Odor Removal of Landfill Site Leachate by Pyroligenous Liquid (목초액을 이용한 쓰레기 매립지 침출수의 악취 제거에 관한 연구)

  • The odor removal of landfill site leachate was carried out using pyroligenous liquid. The constituent elements of pyroligenous liquid and leachate were also analysed, employing Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy(AAS). Before order removal, the heavy metal ions such as Pb, Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe and Ni, in pyroligenous liquid were detected with ultra trace level. However, in this liquid, other metal ions such as As, Hg and Cd were not observed. The optimum condition for removing odor fromthe leachate was observed in 15 times dilution of pyroligenous liquid. Also, the degree of outlet odor was 1. Furthermore, the concentration of odor constituent compounds, e.g. $H_2S, NH_3, NH_2$ and $CO_2$ in the leachate was remarkably reduced. Finally, water quality of the leachate was improved.

  • A potent actinomycetes strain was selected to digest raw starch, which was classified as a strain of Streptomyces sp.. Its amylase production was maximized when it was grown on wheat bran extract media added 4% of cooked corn starch and 0.16% of potassium nitrate for 6 days at 3$0^{\circ}C$ and initial pH 6.2.

  • In order to simulate the leaching solution of copper sulfide ore in $FeCl_3$ solutions, synthetic solutions with composition of $FeCl_3$-$FeCl_2$-$CuCl_2$-CuCl-NaCl-HCl-$H_2O$ were prepared. The concentration of iron and copper chloride was varied from 0.1 to 1 m in synthetic solutions. The effect of composition on the mixed solution pH and potential at $25^{\circ}C$ was measured. When HCl concentration was constant, the increase of CuCl concentration increased solution pH. The increase of other solutes excluding HCl and CuCl decreased solution pH owing to the increase of the activity coefficient of hydrogen ion. A high CuCl concentration favored the redox equilibrium in the direction of Cu(I), while $FeCl_3$ had the opposite effect.

Physico-Chemical Pretreatment of Herbaceous Biomass by Organosolv Flow-Through Process (초본계 바이오매스의 물리-화학적 유기용매 전처리 공정)

  • Herbaceous biomass is easier at chemical conversion than woody biomass. However, pretreatment must be needed because it has substantially lignin. Organsolv is good at fractionation of enzymatic hydrolysis inhibitors such as lignin and it is reusable by distillation when it has low molecular weight. Flow-through process can prevent recondensation of fractionated components and easily separate liquid from the biomass. In this study, the pretreatment was performed for decreasing additional process by using ethanol without catalyst because this process has a lot of operation expense at bio-alcohol production process. Flow-through pretreatment was performed at $150{\sim}190^{\circ}C$ with 30~99.5 wt% ethanol during 20~60 minutes. Also the phsyco-chemical pretreatment was performed for decreasing reaction time and temperature.

Changes of Texture, Soluble Solids and Protein during Cooking of Soybeans (콩의 조리과정 중 텍스쳐, 고형물 및 단백질의 변화)

  • Texture, losses of total solids and proteins o) soybeans were studied during cooking at $100-135^{\circ}C$. The textural changes were measured using the puncture probe with an Instron Universal Testing Machine, and changes in microstructure of beans were observed with scanning electron microscopy during the cooking. The major effect observed was a breakdown of the cell walls and appearance of the protein bodies with soaking process. As the cooking time at $100^{\circ}C$ is longer, the separation of cells and changes in cell shape could be seen in the sample. The greater amounts of soluble solids were leached out with longer coo king time from the beans.

Quality Characteristics of Mungbeanmook Added with Gugija (Lycii fructus) Infusion (구기자 침출액을 첨가한 녹두묵의 품질특성)

  • The principal objective of this study was to evaluate the quality characteristics of mungbeanmook prepared with five different levels (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20%) of Gugija (Lycii fructus) infusion. We analyzed Hunter's color values, pH, texture characteristics, and perfomed sensory evaluation of mungbeanmook prepared with Gugija infusion. The pH levels of mungbeanmook ranged between 5.45 and 6.12 and did not show significant differences. As Gugija infusion concentration increased, the color lightness "L" value decreased, whereas redness color "a" value and yellowness color "b" values increased (P<0.05). With regard to mechanical texture properties of the mungbeanmook samples, as the Gugija infusion concentration increased, the scores of hardness, chewiness, and gumminess all significantly decreased (P<0.05) whereas there were no significant differences in springiness or cohesiveness. The results of the sensory evaluation showed that the score of the LFLT10 sample (10% Gugija infusion) was significantly higher than those of others in terms of taste, color, flavor, texture, and overall quality (P<0.05). Taken together, the recommended optimum level of Gugija infusion in mungbeanmook is 10% for sensory evaluation. Gugija infusion can be a useful approach to improving quality of mungbeenmook as a functional food.

  • The mechanical process followed by hydrometallurgical treatment has been developed in order to recover cobalt and lithium from spent lithium ion battery. In the previous study, a citrate precursor combustion process to prepare cathodic active materials from the leaching solution was elucidated. Resynthesis of electrode materials should be more valuable in spent battery recycling. Conventional slurry mixing of $LiCoO_2$ and carbon cannot make uniform distribution, and therefore the cathode cannot reach the theoretical charge-discharge capacity and is easily degraded during the charge-discharge cycling. In this study, ultra-fine $LiCoO_2$ powders has been prepared by modification of the combustion process and fabricated the enhanced cathode by modification of mixing method of $LiCoO_2$ and carbon added.
