The seed formation and growth of $\alpha$-ferric oxyhydroxide with aerial oxidative precipitation from aqueous solution of ferrous sulfate with KOH, NaOH, $Na_2CO_3$ and $K_2CO_3$ as precipitants have been studied by free pH drift experiment. It has been shown that all precipitants give same particle formation and growth path, and average particle length from KOH and NaOH as precipitants was about 1.5 times shorter than that of $K_2CO_3$ and $Na_2CO_3$. When initial mole ratio, $R_o=[Fe^{2+}]_o/[OH^-]_o$ of KOH was decreased the particle was grown oxyhydroxide seed growth from aqueous solution of ferrous sulfate with KOH has been studied. The influence of the air flow rate, reaction temperature and initial mole ratio, $R_o=[Fe^{2+}]_o/[OH^-]_o$, on the kinetics of seed growth are investigated by static pH experiment. The oxidation rate of seed growth increased with increase in the air low rate, reaction temperature and initial mole patio. The activation energy of seed growth is 16.16 KJ/mol and the rate equation of seed growth can be written as follows: $-\frac{d[Fe^{2+}]}{dt}=1.46{\times}10^4[P_{o2}]^{0.66}[OH^-]^{2.19}exp(-\frac{16.16}{dt})$.

Suspended fine mineral particles are deposited at the areas with low flow velocity and low transportation capacity in rivers, reservoirs and lakes. It can be contaminated by heavy metals. Examples of problem fields art dredging of sediment, water pollutants, and maintenance of navigation channels and construction works. To deal with the settling problems it is necessary to understand tile physico-chemical characteristics of cohesive sediment under varying density of particle and ion addition(NaOH, HCl, NaCl), which is dissolved in river, because fine-grained cohesive sediment can lead to flocculation with the physico-chemical influences and takes different characteristics. Experiments with fresh and saline water are followed with fine-grained sediments(alumina and quartz) in settling columns. Settling velocity of suspended fine particles in still water was measured with a pressure sensor(maximum 10 mbar). Until the initial concentration of 20,000 mg/1 of alumina and quartz the settling velocity was on the increase. Above this initial concentration was it on the decrease. In an acid condition, which causes strong flocculation, average settling velocity of quartz powder was high. In an alkaline water low average settling velocity of it was observed. However, alumina behaved exactly contrarily.
Trace amount of cobalt in water samples was preconcentrated continuously with an organic precipitant and determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The flow injection technique was used to preconcentrate cobalt by on-line direct precipitation with 1-nitroso-2-naphthol. The precipitation was dissolved with methyl isobutyl ketone (MlBK) and was sent to the flame. The optimum conditions for cobalt determination were determined and used to analyze Co samples. For 1.0 mL of sample, the enrichment factor was 13 and the sample throughput was about lO per hour for 0.5 ppm Co solution. The enrichment factor was increased to 68 fold for 10.0 mL. A semi-reference biologicaI sample was prepared and analyzed. The result was in good agreement with the expected value with RSD of 4%.
This study aimed to evaluate the sulfate removal capacity of the enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) technique through the chemical precipitation of sulfate with calcium ions. The optimal EICP recipe was obtained to retain the excess calcium cations in the solution for the generation of a sufficient amount of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) mineral. The effect of gypsum precipitation on the EICP-treated sand specimen was investigated by measuring the shear wave velocity and by visual inspection via scanning electron microscopy. The EICP solution using soybean crude urease, as an alternative to laboratory-grade purified urease, exhibited a lower sulfate removal efficiency at a similar CaCO3 production rate compared with the optimal EICP recipe because of soybean impurities.
The dispersion/flocculation behavior of bentonite is a major concern in performance of drilling fluid. We studied the dispersion/flocculation characteristics of three commercial bentonites [two CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose) treated and one untreated] in waters of different pHs and salt concentrations. We also examined changes in the viscosity of bentonite suspensions in such waters as a major rheological property of drilling fluid. The dispersion/flocculation behaviors of bentonites were measured by two methods: colorimetric and light scattering method. Light scattering method allows estimating the floc diameter and flocculation rate. The dispersion and flocculation behaviors were diverse with the different bentonites and water qualities. In distilled water, all the bentonites were well dispersed up to first 10 minutes. After that, the CMC-bearing bentonites were flocculated. In salt waters, all the samples were flocculated and the flocculation rate is varied with salt concentration and polymer content. The volume of settled flocs decreased with increasing salt concentration. The flocculation rate and floc diameter increased with decreasing pH of solutions, whereas the volume of settled flocs increased with increasing pH of solutions. The bentonites of fast flocculation behavior had low viscosity. The results of the present study will be helpful in applying bentonites to drilling fluids in diverse environments.

Ultra Rapid Coagulation (URC) can dramatically remove pollutants loaded in wastewater by adding weighted coagulation additives (WCA) and recycling sludge into the coagulation basin to increase settling velocity and surface adsorption ability of floc. Also settling chamber together with lamella plates offers the high rate settling velocity, which can economically treat a considerable amount of pollutants like as combined sewage overflow (CSO) during the heavy rainfall and reduce the pollutants load into the receiving water for securing water source. It was estimated optimal configuration of settling chamber by using fluent model and the possibilities of reusing the sludge generated in this system.
'Heterogeneous' vapor diffusion experiments were carried out using hen egg white Iysozyme and equine serum albumin as model proteins: droplets were equilibrated against reservoir solutiorls containing an alternative precipitant which is different from results showed that the use of polyethylene glycol as an alternative precipitant instead of NaCl or ammonium sulfate reduces equilibration rate between droplet and reservoir solution. By using the heterogeneous vapor diffusion techniqlue it is possible to control the equilibration rate by adjusting the relative amounts of ionic salts and nonionic yecipitants in reservoir solutions.
The characteristics of fluorine removal from wastewater have been investigated by precipitation method using calcium as a precipitant for the purpose of the reuse of treated wastewater. In the conditions of 10 mM of the initial concentration of fluorine and pH 4, the precipitation of fluorine was rapidly progressed within a few minutes after the precipitant was added and the precipitation of fluorine was observed to follow a second order reaction. Also, as the addition of precipitant was increased, the reaction rate constant of fluorine precipitation was found to rise. Postulating that the maximum fluorine removal was attained at pH 4, about 70% of fluorine was precipitated compared with the maximum removal when 10 times of equivalent amount of calcium was employed at pH 2 and the fluorine removal was about 96% compared with its maximum value at pH 3 under the same addition of precipitant. The fluorine precipitation reaction was found to be endothermic and the coexistence of $SiF_6{^{2-}}$ with fluorine resulted in its less removal. Finally, the isoelectric point of the precipitate was examined to be ca. pH 5.

Flow characteristics analysis and tracer test simulations for the rectangular typed sedimentation basins, which have been operated at D_water treatment plant in Korea, were carried out using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) techniques for design ($15,864m^3/day$) and operation flowrate ($33,333m^3/day$). Also, each efficiency of the sedimentation basin was evaluated by application of the Lagrangin technique on the assumption of the particles flowing into the inlet of the sedimentation basin. From the results of simulation, the mean velocity values for making the flow in the settling basin as a plug flow region were derived as 0.00193 m/s and 0.00417 m/s, respectively. In addition, ${\beta}$ (effective contact factor) values were calculated to be 0.51 and 0.46, and the Morrill Index values were 6.05 and 3.21, respectively for both flowrate conditions.
