We have measured soil enzyme activities, which represent the rates of organic matter decomposition, in four riparian ecosystems in Korea. ${\beta}$-glucosidase, N-acetylglucosaminidase, phosphatase and arylsulfatase activities were determined in five occasions over a year period in soils of control plots and plots with invasive plants, namely Sicyos angulatus and Humulus japonicus. Significantly higher enzyme activities were found in soils with invasive plant in barren land, but the difference was season and enzyme-specific. Although it was not universal changes, the invasive plants appeared to accelerate organic matter decomposition in some disturbed riparian ecosystems.

- Carduus acanthoides L. We investigate predation rates of larvae and juveniles of Rana catesbeiana by using six native predatory fishes and six birds to select effective species to ecological control and management of R. catesbeiana that is invasive alien species and affects seriously wetland in Korea. Among freshwater fishes, Pseudobagrus fulvidraco, Silurus asotus and Channa argus ate larvae and juveniles of R. catesbeiana, and prefer the former, however Opsariichthys uncirostris, Monopterus albus and Anguilla japonica didn't eat at all. Six experimental water birds, Cygnus columbianus, Cygnus cygnus, Anas crecca, Aix galericulata, Anas penelope and Anas formosa nerver ate them. We were able to confirm control of R. catesbeiana probability using the native predatory fishes in Korea wetland.
The purpose of this study was to understand the factors that affected activities and differences in seasonal activities of the invasive red-eared slider turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans) at Ansan reed wetland in Sangnok-gu, Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, the Republic of Korea. We installed nine nets in the study region to capture turtles and checked the nets twice a day for 154 days from April 28 to September 28 2013. In total, 60 individuals, including 12 juveniles, 26 adult males, and 22 adult females, were captured in 96 of 308 net checks. The multiple regression analysis of 12 environmental factors was conducted to analyze activity factors of red-eared slider turtle by assuming the number of turtles captured for a week to be the indicator of the activeness of the turtles. The result showed that the daylength was the only environmental factor that significantly affected the turtles' activity (p<0.001), and none of the other factors showed a significant correlation. The highest activity was recorded at the end of May, which was the beginning of the reproductive period. The daylength during the breeding season was significantly different from that during other seasons (Kruskal-Wallis test, p<0.001). The information about the relationship between environmental factors and species in habitat can be useful for the management of invasive alien species in the future.
The problem of invasive species has been recently emerged as one of complicated issues due to increasing globalisation and its consequence of species immigrations. Since in most cases of invasive species it is less likely to fully eradicate them through human efforts, it is often interested in reducing the possibility of ecological disaster caused by the invasive species. This paper provides an optimal control model to minimize such possibility while allowing the stochastic nature of biological growth of the invasive species. Conditions under which the partial eradication effort is optimal are derived. Simple numerical illustration is provided using H1N1 data which is categorized as an invasive disease in microorganism level.
Biological invasion of alien plants is considered to be one of the most serious threats to biodiversity in riparian zones. The effects of two invasive alien plants, Sicyos angulatus and Paspalum distichum var. indutum, on the flora and community structure of the riparian vegetation were investigated at 22 sites at streams in Korea. Sicyos angulatus has invaded the central Korean Peninsula. This alien plant has caused problems to stream managers because of its aggressive vining growth. It had suppressed native vegetation such as trees, shrubs and tall grasses on bank slope and higher floodplains. Paspalum distichum var. indutum has become more widespread in the southern part of Korea. This invasive plant has shallow rhizomes and creeping, extensively branched stolons. It forms a dense mat over lotic or slowly-flowing water and threatens submerged and short emergent hydrophytes. In order to control the introduction and expansion of alien plants, limitation of artificial disturbances and appropriate alien plant management are needed in riparian areas.
During late July 2020, a species of weevil in the genus Aclees (Curculionidae, Molytinae) was found on several fig farms in the Haenam-gun district of Jeonnam Province, Korea. The weevil was subsequently identified as Aclees taiwanensis Kôno, 1933 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), an exotic species, probably of subtropical and tropical Asian origin, that has also been introduced to Italy and France, where it is associated with severe damage to fig trees. This is the first report of an Aclees weevil in Korea.
The species distribution model would be a useful tool for understanding how invasive alien species spread over the country and what environmental variables contribute to their distributions. This study is focused on the potential distribution of two invasive alien species, the common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) and knotgrass (Paspalum distichum) in the Korean Peninsula. The maximum entropy (Maxent) model was used for the prediction of their distribution by inferring their climatic environmental requirements from localities where they are currently known to occur. We obtained their presence data from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility and the Korean plant species databases and bioclimatic data from the WorldClim dataset. As a results of the modelling, the potential distribution predicted by global occurrence data was more accurate than that by native occurrence data. The variables determining the common ragweed distribution were precipitation of the driest month and annual mean temperature. Both annual and the coldest quarter mean temperatures were critical factors in determining the knotgrass distribution. The Maxent model could be a useful tool for the prediction of alien species invasion and the management of their expansion.
