The self-assembled monolayer coating of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) on the silicon based MEMS was investigated and surface characteristics were considered as a function of coating conditions and reagent composition. The sulfuric peroxide mixture (SPM) solution was used to form -OH group which caused the hydrophilic characteristic on silicon surftce. Highest hydrophilicity was obtained by SPM solution with 85% acid content at room temperature. OTS was applied on the silicon surface by means of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) coating. It was found that sol-gel reaction was took place between -OH group on the silicon surface and -Cl group in OTS. As a result, the contact angle increased due to the increase of hydrophobicity by Si-O bonding of SAMs. Sol-gel reaction could be controlled by coating conditions as well as reagent composition in OTS coating solution.
In order to alleviate the cyto-toxicity and improve the poor water solubility of 7-hydroxy-3-methoxycadalene, it was substituted with glucose, a strong hydrophilic and non cyto-toxiccompound, in the C-7 position. The yield of final product was ca. 55.4%. The $IC_{50}$ values of 7-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl-3-methoxycadalene against normal lung cell (WI-38 cell line) and human lung cancer cell (A-549 cell line), which is a parameter for determination of cell viability, were measured to $298.2{\mu}m$ and $88.6{\mu}m$, respectively. This result indicates that the pharmaceutical efficiency of the cadalene-glucose derivative targeted to lung cancer cell could be improved more than three times compared to the non derivatized cadalene. In addition, glycosylation of 7-hydroxy-3-methoxycadalene turned its hydrophobic property to more soluble in water.
In view of environmental considerations, the control of carbon dioxide (CO2) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is one of important issues in the film and coating industries. Therefore, UV-curable system has been developed due to minimize emissions of VOCs and reduce CO2 emission due to low energy consumption from fast curing. Also, biodegradable polymers economically are attractive because of environmental and economic concerns associated with huge waste plastics. In this study, UV-curable polyurethane acrylates with different compositions of biodegradable polylactide (PLA) diol and poly(ethylene glycol) as diols were synthesized and curing reaction of their end-capped acrylates was performed by UV exposure. Tensile strength, elongation, and Tg of the UV-cured polyurethane acrylates increased with PLA diol content in the diol while their hydrophilicity and thermal stability increased with the PEG content. These results indicated a property of UV-cured polyurethane acrylates could be controlled by environment-friendly diols.
In this study, alkoxysilane-functionalized amphiphilic polymer (AFAP), which have hydrophilic segment and hydrophobic segment functionalized by alkoxysilane group at the same backbone, was synthesized and used as a dispersant and control agent for reaction rate in the preparation of colloidally stable organic-inorganic (O-I) hybrid sols. After reaction with fluorosilane compounds, fluorinated O-I hybrid sols were prepared and coated onto glass substrate to form hydrophobic O-I hybrid coating films through low-temperature curing process. Surface hardness and hydrophobicity of cured coating films were varied with type of solvent and composition of AFAP and fluorinated alkoxysilane compounds. At appropriate solvent and composition of fluorinated alkoxysilane compounds, O-I hybrid coating film having high transparency and surface hardness could be prepared, which could be applicable to cover window of solar cell and displays.
Impregnation of phosphorous additiers into graphite bulk was studied with the goal of enhancing the effectiveness of oxidationprotection. In addition graphite acid washing was carried out prior to the impregnation further to improve oxidation resistance. Observation of the oxidation rate for raw graphite(Raw) impregnated graphite with tri-butyl phsophate on raw block(RP) and impregnated graphite on acid-treated graphite(AP) in air are reported. The phsophorus residue adsorbed on the graphite surface at active sites was determined by FTIR, XRS, TGA techniques. AP with tri-butyl phosphate was found to result in both 30% reduction in oxidation rate at 1000$^{\circ}C$ compared to Raw and increase of 120$^{\circ}C$ in oxidation temperature From the samples of oxidation rate of each specimen in Arrhenius plot it can be said that the present oxidation resistance origninates from the change of chemical reaction modesw neigther by acid-washing treatment nor phsophate impregnation
In this paper we have described the structural characterization of recombinant bovine somatotropin produced in Escherichia coli. Recombinant bovine somatotropin consists of 191 amino acid residues with a calculated molecular weight of 21,802 Da. For fragmentation of recombinant bovine somatotropin, we have used trypsin, Staphylococcus aureus V8 pretease, CNBr, and mild acid hydrolysis method. Digestion and cleavage with these proteases and chemicals yielded peptides of various size for amino acid sequence determination. The N-terminal sequence analysis was carried out up to thirty residues. Because the design of the recombinant bovine somatotropin gene for expression was such that the coding sequence begins with an initiation codon, AUG, before Ala, the first amino acid of bovine somatotropin, we could expect the initial amino acid as N-formyl Met. But the first amino acid of this protein, expressed in E. coli cells as inclusion bodies, was Ala. And the amino acid composition of RP-HPLC purified recombinant bovine somatotropin was determined and no essencial difference was observed. The amino acid sequence of the recombinant bovine somatotropin was identical to that predicted from its recombinant gene. There was no processing or replacement of amino acid residues in recombinant bovine somatotropin expressed in E. coli. The hydropathy plot of recombinant bovine somatotropin revealed a hydrophobic region at the NH2-terminus and hydrophilic region at the COOH-terminus. The E. coli expression system is thought to be valuable for the expression of recombinant bovine somatotropin because protein was processed to remove the N-terminal Met residue by methionyl-aminopeptidase autonomously.
Ammonium p-methylbenzenesulfonate, $C_7H_11NO_3S$, Mr = 189.23, orthorhombic, space group $Pna2-1$, a = 20.406(4), b = 6.271(1), c = 7.067(2)${\AA}$, V = 904.19 ${\AA}^3$, Z = 4, $D_x$ = 1.39, $D_m =1.38g{\cdot}cm^{-3}$, ${\lambda}(M_o K_{\alpha})$ = 0. 71069 ${\AA}$, ${\mu}=3.1 cm^{-1}$, T = 298K, F(000) = 400, final R = 0.057 for 994 unique observed reflections with I > $16{\sigma}(I)$. The methylbenzene portion including the sulfur atom is nearly planar. Between the $SO_3$ groups and the ammonium ion, there are three unique hydrogen bonds; two of which make the anions linked along the c-axis and the remaining one along the b-axis. These hydrogen bonds make two-dimensionally hydrogen-bonded molecular layers. Among these hydrophilic layers, the methylbenzene moieties cluster together to form hydrophobic layers.
The surface modification and characterization of Ar-plasma treated polypropylene (PP) blend are investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle measurement. An increase in Ar-plasma treatment time leads to an increase in wettability, oxygen containing polar functional groups, the amount of talc, and surface roughness on the PP blend surface. A careful observation using SEM indicates that there exists a skin layer consisting of only PP component. The difference in viscosity between PP and rubber particles facilities the formation of skin layer. However, it is found that an increase in Ar-plasma treatment time helps to decrease the thickness of skin layer. Additional methodologies for the elimination of skin layer during injection molding are also discussed. The surface modification and morphological alteration induced by Ar-plasma treatment provides a hydrophilic state, followed by the improvement in wettability, on the PP blend surface.
During the life cycle, plants have to suffer from various environmental stresses. A common element in response to many environmental stresses is cellular dehydration. Dehydrins are a family of proteins commonly induced by environmental stresses associated with low temperature or dehydration and during seed maturation drying. For the study in the defense mechanism against various stresses, a cDNA clone encoding a dehydrin gene was isolated from a cDNA library prepared from tab root mRNAs of Codonopsis lanceolata. The cDNA, designated ClDhn1, is 893 nucleotides long and has an open reading frame of 480 bp with a deduced amino acid sequence of 159 residues. The ClDhn1 amino acid sequence is highly hydrophilic and possesses two conserved repeats of characterized lysinerich Ksegment (KIKEKLPG), and a 7serine residue stretch prior to the first lysinerich repeat that is common to many dehydrins. The DEYGNP conserved motif is, however, modified in the sequence of ClDhn1 gene. The deduced amino acid sequence of ClDhn1 was compared with other plant dehydrinls and showed high homology with Solanum commersonii
Floating architecture is the most effective way to accommodate itself to sea-level rise due to climate change. At the same time floating architecture is the best model to offer the new spatial experience through water-friendly environment. Domestic floating architecture is still on the early stage compared to Europe which has several companies specialized in designing and building floating architecture. Floating architecture is divided into 8 types according to its criteria such as program, form, scale, level, location, access, mobility and energy. The following are design characteristics of floating architecture : (1) composed of 2 stories, (2) having large deck, (3) designing rectangular plan and balanced mass, (4) maximizing view, (5) having water-friendly space, (6) multi-using space and minimizing surface, (7) planning section to control light reflecting from the water, (8) modular and unit system.
