The Moderating Roles of Perceived Responsiveness of SNS Friends and Self-Esteem in the Relationship between SNS Use and Perceived Social Support among College Students (대학생들의 SNS 이용과 사회적 지지와의 관계에서 SNS친구들의 반응성 인식 및 자아존중감의 조절 효과)

  • The present study explored the moderating roles of perceived responsiveness of SNS friends and self-esteem in the relationship between SNS use and perceived social support among college students. Using a panel owned by a research firm, a nationwide online survey was conducted (females N = 264, males N = 239). The results of regression analysis suggested that there is no significant main effect of SNS use but a significant main effect of perceived responsiveness of SNS friends. In addition, a three-way interaction effect was found among perceived responsiveness of SNS friends, SNS use, and self-esteem. This study contributes to elaboration of the extant research as well as providing practical implications to SNS-based intervention programs for college students' psychological well-being.

힐링스토리 프로그램 개발과 적용에 관한 연구

  • 이 연구는 힐링스토리프로그램의 기초를 구축하고 그 효과를 입증하기 위하여 '친구'의 주제 아래 상황별 힐링스토리를 창작하고, 이것을 적용한 '우리, 친구하자' 독서프로그램을 개발하여 친구관계의 대인관계능력에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 연구결과, 힐링스토리 독서팀이 독서팀보다 대인관계능력이 전체적으로 향상된 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구에서는 일반학생을 대상으로 다양한 상황의 힐링스토리를 창작하여 프로그램에 접목시켰으며 상황을 독서치료의 개념보다는 독서의 큰 범주로 판단하여 독서교육으로 적용하였다.

The Mediating Effect of Resilience and Empathy on the Relation between Humanity and Friendship of the Early Adolescents (초기 청소년의 인간애와 친구관계에서 적응유연성과 공감능력의 매개효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine resilience and empathy on the relation between humanity and friendship of the early adolescents using structural equation modeling. The subjects were total 332 students of the 5th and 6th grade in elementary school and 1st and 2nd grade in junior school. The data were collected by means of the self-report questionnaire. The results of this study were as follows: Firstly, the direct effect of humanity on resilience, empathy, and friendship was found. Resilience also influence friendship directly, but empathy did not affect friendship. Secondly, humanity had influence on friendship partially mediated by resilience, but not mediated by empathy. This result shows that resilience was better mediated between humanity and friendship than empathy. Additionally, sex differences were found on empathy, but the differences were not found on resilience. The results revealed that the adolescents who scored high on humanity were better at friendship and when the higher humanity score was, the higher level of resilience was found, and this had an indirect effect on friendship quality.

The Effects of School Adolescents' Personal Relationship on Delinquency: Focusing on Mediator Effect of Game Addiction (학교청소년의 대인관계가 비행에 미치는 영향: 게임중독의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • This study aimed to examine the mediate effects of game addiction on the delinquency among school adolescents. In order to achieve the research purpose, secondary data was used which is the data by 8,516 people researched for 'A study on mental health improvement policy for children and adolescents II' among NYPI cross-sectional analysis provided by Korean Children Adolescents Data Archive and the collected data was analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 21.0. The major findings were as follows. First, the better relationship with family and teachers led to lower level of game addiction and delinquency. However, in terms of relationship with friends, better relationship led to lower level of game addiction but higher level of delinquency. Second, as a result of verifying mediator effect of game addiction by decomposing the effects of relationship with family, teachers and friends on delinquency, they all demonstrated negative mediator effect. Based on the results I discussed social welfare intervention methods for game addiction in order to understand and prevent school adolescents' delinquency.

A Contemporaneous and Lagged Effects of Social Supports on Self-esteem Development Trajectory of Multicultural Adolescents (다문화 가정 청소년이 지각한 사회적 지지가 자아존중감 발달궤적에 미치는 동시효과와 지연효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the changing trajectory of self-esteem and to explore contemporaneous and lagged effects of social supports(family, friends, and teacher) of 4th graders in elementary school to 9th graders in middle school. The subjects were 1,296 multiethnic students, who participated in the Multicultural Children and Adolescents Panel Study(MCAPS) from 2011 to 2016. The results of piecewise growth function showed that students' self-esteem was increased during upper grade in elementary school but soon deceased during middle school. Individual differences were found at initial, 1st and 2nd changing status. Students with higher level at initial status in self-esteem showed less increased pattern during elementary school but greater decreased pattern during middle school. In addition, supports from family and teacher showed contemporaneous effects across all 6 years while supports from friends showed such effects only for 5 years except 9th grade. Lagged effects of family were found in elementary school and significant lagged effects with supports from friends were found at 6th and 8th grade. The results of this study imply that the social support of family, friends, and teacher has an important role to encourage the self-esteem of multicultural adolescents.

Search for meaning in life and academic satisfaction: A mediating role of hope and a moderating role of social support (삶의 의미 추구와 학업만족의 관계: 희망의 매개효과 및 사회적 지지의 조절효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to shed light on a role of hope in understanding the relationship between the search for meaning in life and academic satisfaction and to suggest ways to increase hope among Korean students. We hypothesized that the relationship between search for meaning in life and academic satisfaction would be mediated by hope and the positive relationship between search for meaning and hope would be strengthened by family support and friend support. We conducted two surveys to examine the hypotheses. Based on Study 1 using a sample of 190 undergraduate students, we found that the relationship between search for meaning in life and academic satisfaction was fully mediated by hope. In Study 2, we examined the four types of hope that include internal hope and three types of external hope (i.e., family, friends, and supernatural being) to extend knowledge on what features of hope mediate the relationships between search for meaning and academic satisfaction. Study 2 based on a sample of 313 high school students showed that the link from the search for meaning in life and academic satisfaction was fully mediated by internal hope and external-peers hope. The mediating effects of external-family hope and external-spiritual hope were not significant in Study 2. Also, we found that family support strengthened the positive links from the search for meaning in life to hope (Study 1) and to internal hope (Study 2) while the interactive effects of friend support and the search for meaning on hope were not significant in both studies. Based on the results, we discussed several implications, limitations, and recommendations for future research.

The Effect of Adolescents' Academic Helplessness on Smartphone Dependence: Verifying the Parallel Mediating Effect of Self-esteem and Friendships (청소년의 학업무기력이 스마트폰 의존에 미치는 영향: 자아존중감과 친구관계의 병렬매개효과 검증)

  • This study identified the relationship between adolescents' academic helplessness and smartphone dependence and verified the parallel mediating effect of self-esteem and friendships. To this end, the fourth data of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS) conducted by the Korea Youth Policy Institute were used, and 2,244 were used for analysis after removing 346 adolescents who responded to the survey. For data analysis, the statistical package programs SPSS WIN 25.0 and Hayes (2013)'s PROCESS Macro V 3.5 were used, and the following results were derived. First, adolescents' academic helplessness had a positive (+)(+) effect on their dependence on smartphones. Second, self-esteem was found to mediate the relationship between adolescents' academic helplessness and smartphone dependence. Third, it was found that friend relationships mediate the relationship between adolescents' academic helplessness and smartphone dependence. Based on these results, practical and policy suggestions to reduce adolescents' dependence on smartphones and follow-up studies to overcome the limitations of research were proposed.

Comparing Interaction Effects between Causal and Control Factors in College Students' Online Contact and Distribution of Sexually Explicit Material (대학생의 온라인상의 불법 성콘텐츠 접촉과 불법 성콘텐츠 유통의 원인요인과 통제요인의 상호작용효과 비교)

  • This study considers both causal and control factors for explaining both contact and distribution of sexually explicit material and tests their interaction effects for examining buffering effects of control factors in causal process. This study examines the effect of low self-control, differential association with peers and patriarchy family environmental factor as causal factors. It also considers three control factors such as morality. legal punishment, and lack of opportunity and test interaction effect between causal and control factors in both contact and distribution cases. Using data from college students in Seoul, results show that the effects of all causal factors are significant in both contact and distribution of sexually explicit material and the effect of differential association is the most significant. However, their interaction effects between causal and control factors are different across contact and distribution cases. In the contact case, all interaction effects are not significant. It means that causal factors have independent effects and control factors have no buffering effects. However, in the distribution case, the interaction effects between low self-control and morality, between differential association and morality, between patriarchy family and punishment, and between patriarchy family and lack of opportunity are significant. Empirical implications are discussed.

Impact of social relationships on self-related information processing and emotional experiences (사회적 관계가 개인의 정보처리와 정서경험에 미치는 효과)

  • Do social situations have an impact on an individual's information processing and emotional experiences? Two studies were conducted to investigate relationships between self-reference effects, emotional experiences and social information processing. Study 1 examined whether biases favoring self-related stimuli could occur automatically. Participants had to judge whether sequential geometric shape-label pairs matched or mismatched. The results showed that self-related stimuli are more rapidly processed than friends/others-related stimuli. In Study 2, the participants had to recall items which were presented with different instructions (either chosen by a friend or by the computer). Here we explored whether the self-reference effect is reduced in a social learning condition. When comparing the social learning condition (seated in pairs) with the nonsocial learning condition (seated alone), the participants recalled more self-related words in the nonsocial learning condition than in the social learning condition. Importantly, the automatic self-reference effect disappeared in the social learning condition. More friends-related words were recalled in the social condition than self-related words. In addition, while tasting chocolates, the participants judged them to be more likeable in the social condition than in the nonsocial condition. These results implicated that social processing can be useful for reducing the automatic self-reference effects and shared experiences are perceived more intensely than unshared experiences.
