  • The aim of this study was to examine whether there is an association between vitamin intakes and established periodontitis in Korean adult population. The 6,245 subjects aged over 19 years old, who participated in health survey, oral examination and nutrition survey were selected for this study from the database of the Fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Established periodontitis was defined as ${\geq}$ code 3 in community periodontal index. Vitamin intake was assessed with the food-frequency questionnaire. In analysis, participants were classified by quintile of vitamin intakes. We also considered covariates as socio-demographic characteristics, health-related behaviors including physical activities, systemic diseases and oral health-related behaviors. Multiple logistic regression was performed to assess the crude and adjusted associations. All analyses considered a complex sampling design using SAS 9.2. In crude analysis, less intake of vitamin A, retinol and vitamin B2 significantly increased the risk of periodontitis (vitamin A, odds ratio [OR] Q1=1.00, Q2=0.73, Q3=0.80, Q4=0.77, Q5=0.78; retinol, OR: Q1=1.00, Q2=0.86, Q3=0.73, Q4=0.62, Q5=0.55; vitamin B2, OR: Q1=1.00, Q2=0.70, Q3=0.63, Q4=0.67, Q5=0.68). However, after adjusting for socio-demographics, general and oral health status and behaviors, only vitamin B2 was significantly associated with established periodontitis (OR: Q1=1.00, Q2=0.72, Q3=0.73, Q4=0.76, Q5=0.84). An adequate vitamin B2 intake was significantly associated with a decreased risk of periodontitis. This finding shows that nutrient intake is slightly correlated with periodontitis in Korean adult population. Further studies are needed to understand this association between nutrients intake and periodontitis in more details.

  • This paper was trying to investigate the periodontal health recognition and self oral hygiene behaviors and figure out that relationship. The results having analyzed 592 questionnaires returned patient who had visited the dental clinic which is selected randomly were following. There were relationships between the periodontal health recognition and self oral hygiene behaviors. Self oral hygiene behaviors were significantly high when, women did than men did, education level, subjective oral health status, and periodontal health recognition about managements were higher and periodontal health recognitions about treatment were lower. It was the periodontal health recognition that was influential the most in the independent variables. Therefore, knowledge related to the periodontal health should be educated to the patients visiting the dental clinic, and the patients should receive helps to perform self oral hygiene behaviors by inducing the transition of attitude to periodontal health.

  • Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) or second hand smoke or passive smoking has become a well-known risk factor for various health hazards in nonsmoking adults as well as active smokers. In Korea, there have been few studies concerning about the impact of ETS on periodontal health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between exposure to passive smoking and prevalence of periodontitis using Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) in 2008 and 2009. The Fourth KNHANES data was employed from 2008~2009. The final sample size was 4,669 adults aged over 18 years, who were never-smoker and had the information about ETS both at home and in the workplace, urine analysis and periodontal examination by Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Periodontitis was defined as CPI codes ${\geq}3$. Data were analyzed using PASW Statistics 18.0. The sociodemographic and behavioral factors were adjusted as confounders. Overall, 17.1% (male 16.4%, female 83.6%) of the participants were exposed to ETS. The mean concentration of cotinine in those exposed ETS was significantly higher than that in unexposed people ($46.92{\mu}g/ml$ versus $19.34{\mu}g/ml$, p<0.001). Participants exposed to ETS were more likely to have periodontitis than those unexposed after adjusting for potential confounding variables. ETS is associated with the prevalence of periodontitis in Korean adults. This may suggest that patients with periodontitis or periodontal surgery should be protected from smokers or smoking places.

  • The aim of this study was to confirm the association between obesity and periodontitis in adults and identify the convergence relationship between periodontal disease and health-related behavior at each stage of obesity among 10,058 adults aged 30-79 years from the 7th National Health and Nutrition Survey data. We performed chi-square tests and multivariate logistic regression analyses, adjusting for demographic characteristics and health status. We found that the higher the obesity stage, the higher the risk of periodontitis. Smoking, not using oral care products, and not attending dental check-ups were associated with periodontitis. In addition, we found a difference in influence factors according to the stage of obesity. Increase in obesity stage is a negative influence on the prevalence of periodontitis. Hence, an oral health program should be applied to the obesity management process.

  • The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between regular interdental cleaning and periodontal condition. A total of 319 pregnant women were recruited at 21 to 24 weeks of gestation. Information on demographics, health status and health behaviors including regulary use of interdental cleaning aids, that can influence periodontal condition was collected. Full mouth periodontal probing was performed. Periodontitis was defined as CAL of 4.0 mm or greater on 2 or more sites not on the same tooth. Gingivitis was defined as 15 percent and more sites showed bleeding on probing. Gingival crevice fluid sample was collected for bacterial analysis. We studied a total of 319 subjects, comprised of 116 subjects who use interdental cleaning device regularly and 203 subjects who didn't. Subjects who do not use interdental cleaning regularly had 2.3 times higher risk of gingivitis and 2.7 times of periodontitis, 2.3 times more amount of P. gingivalis. There was a significant relationship between regular interdental cleaning and periodontal condition in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the periodontal disease awareness and periodontal health status of industrial workers in an attempt to help facilitate their prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. In regard to a knowledge acquisition route on periodontal diseases, the largest number of the industrial workers investigated(36.3%) learned about the diseases from dental hospitals. As to scaling cycle, the younger workers deemed it necessary to get their teeth scaled every six months. In contrary, the older workers considered it advisable to do that about once a year. Age made a statistically significant difference to that (p<.05). 2. As for the state of the periodontal diseases of the workers, the greatest group (26.5%) found themselves to have something between their teeth often. The second most prevalent peridontal disease was gingival bleeding(24.5%), and the third largest group(24.5%) had teeth that were sensitive to cold. The fourth greatest group(15.9%) had the swollen gums from time to time, and the fifth largest group(4.5%) had shaken teeth. 3. Concerning the cause of periodontal diseases, the largest group (48.8%) cited an incorrect toothbrushing. As to the prevention of periodontal diseases, the greatest group(66.8%) viewed the right toothbrushing as the best way for that as well.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the oral health behaviors and lifestyle of hypertension patients on their perceived periodontal diseases. The data of the 2013 community health survey were used, and the data of 55,632 patients who suffered from hypertension and who were at the ages of 19 and over was analyzed. The analying methods used in this study were chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis. Gender, age, marital status, education, economic activity, income level and subscription to private medical insurance were identified as the factors to affect the perceived periodontal disease of the hypertension patients, and lifestyle and oral health behaviors were found to have exerted a significant influence on perceived periodontal disease. As this study found that not only the socioeconomic characteristics of the hypertension patients but their oral health care and lifestyle were all correlated with perceived periodontal disease, how to promote the oral health of those who are susceptible to periodontal diseases should carefully be considered.
