The aim of this study was to investigate the correlations between the self-reported symptoms of periodontal diseases and the quality of life. This study conducted its questionnaire survey over the subjects of 450 adults who had ever visited dental clinics among the adults of age 35-65 living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do region from January 7 to March 14, 2010. The data were analyzed using a chi-square test, t-test, binominal logistic regression analysis in the SPSS version 12.0 program. Among the self-reported symptoms of periodontal diseases, 65% of respondents perceived that 'I bleed from the gums in brushing my teeth', which was the most, whereas 18.8% of respondents perceived to 'tooth mobility', which was the least. Self-reported symptoms of periodontal diseases was associated with socio-demographic characteristics such as sex, age, level of education and periodic oral examination, dental scaling(p<0.05). People who perceived the symptoms of periodontal diseases experienced functional limitation, physical pain, psychological discomfort, disability in diverse domains, and social handicap more than the group who did not perceive them(p<0.001). OHIP-14 scores were significantly correlated with sex, bleeding gums, swollen gums and bad breath(p<0.05). This study showed the self-reported periodontal problem had a negative impact on the public's leading their happy life. Therefore, in order to enhance the quality of life in adults, it is necessary to prevent periodontal diseases and reduce the subjective symptoms.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors related to gingival symptoms by mental health factors among the adolescents in Korea. Methods: The data were used which were collected from the web-based survey of the National 2016 Korean Youth Risk Behavior of Korean Center for Disease Control. The study sample comprised of 65,528 adolescents in middle- and high schools. Data were analyzed using SPSS Ver. 20.0 and multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify the factors related to gingival symptoms by mental health factors. Results: The relationship between mental health factors and gingival symptoms were examined. And, subject characteristics about gingival symptoms were identified to be significant factors such as gender, grade, economic level, smoking and drinking status in all poor mental health groups. The number of brushing per day was related to the gingival symptoms for both good mental health groups and poor mental health groups. Conclusions: Mental health, characteristics, health behaviors of the adolescents should be considered when establishing the policies and institutions to improve oral health targeted adolescents.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of the amount and duration of smoking on gingival symptoms in adolescents. Methods: We used the web-based survey data of youth health behaviors from 2016 conducted by the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The subjects of the study were 67,983 middle and high school students. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS Ver 20.0 program, and complex sample multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze gingival symptoms according to short- or long-term smoking habits. Results: In subjects with short-term smoking habits, there was no significant difference in gingival symptoms according to the smoking amount. However, after adjusting for socioeconomic characteristics and oral health behaviors in subjects with long-term smoking habits, a heavy smoking amount (${\geq}0.52PY$) had a 1.25 times higher effect than a light smoking amount (<0.52 PY) on gingival symptoms. Long-term heavy smoking (${\geq}0.52PY$) and low daily tooth-brushing frequency in high school students were factors affecting gingival symptoms. Conclusions: When conducting a project on the oral health of adolescents, it is argued that specific investigations and measures should be set up regarding health behavior factors, such as the amount and duration of smoking among adolescents.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of smoking and drinking status with gingival symptoms among the adolescents in Korea. Methods:We used the data from the web-based survey of the National Korean Youth Risk Behavior of Korean Center for Disease Control in 2016. The study subjects were 65,528 adolescents from middle- and high schools. Data were analyzed by SPSS Ver. 19.0. Multiple regression analysis was used to assess the factors related to gingival symptoms. Results: We observed 1.52 of odds ratio (OR) for gingival symptoms for those who smoked only without drinking in middle schools. In addition, we had ORs of 1.29 or 1.69 for those who drank only without smoking, or who smoked and drank in the middle schools, respectively, compared to nonsmoking nondrinkers. Risk of gingival symptoms for those who drank only or who smoked and drank in high schools were 1.18 or 1.17 times higher than nonsmoking nondrinkers. Conclusions: Smoking and drinking status among the adolescents are the risk factors to develop gingival symptoms. The problem of smoking and drinking in the adolescents should be considered when establishing the policies and institutions to improve oral health targeting the adolescents.
Objectives: This study aimed to determine the effect of COVID-19-induced household economic deterioration on gingival pain and bleeding. Methods: Data from the 16th Adolescent Health Behavior Survey 2020 were used. A total of 57,925 adolescents were included in this cross-sectional study. We evaluated the worsening of the COVID-19-induced household economic situation, gingival pain, and bleeding. All surveys were assessed in a subjective non-face-to-face online interview. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-squared tests, and logistic regression. Results: The overall prevalence of gingival pain and bleeding symptoms in the study population was 19.2%. People with COVID-19 were more likely to suffer from gingival pain and gingival bleeding than those who did not have economic deterioration due to COVID-19. There was no economic deterioration due to COVID-19 (aOR=1.048, 95% CI=1.034-1.227) and worsened very much (aOR=1.358, 95% CI=1.164-1.585). Conclusions: There were more cases of gingival pain and gingival bleeding, which are early symptoms of periodontal disease, in patients with COVID-19 compared to cases without deterioration of the household economic situation due to COVID-19. It is necessary to measure and study gingival bleeding objectively rather than relying on self-reports.

The Purpose of this study was to examine the factors affecting oral health status of some workers. Answer sheets for questionnarie for 178 workers at Changwon city, Korea, were collected and analyzed using SPSS 19.0. The number of respondents who have visited dental clinic is lower among group with dental caries than group without dental caries. The respondents who have scaling corresponds to 31.3% in the group with dental caries and a little bit lower percentage is shown in the group without dental cares(p<.05). Among those with dental caries, the respondents who experienced tooth pains are to 51.3% and those who had frequent blooding in gum 48.7% and those who had ordors inside the mouth 53.8%. The number of respondents who had scaling within last one year among the group with gingival inflammation is lower than those without it(p<.001). In the group with gingival inflammation, no smokers are corresponding to 13.9%(p<.01) and those with more than 3 times brush of tooth 4.7% and those with oral hygiene devices are to 5.9%. Important variables which have effects on dental caries are understood as self-evaluation for dental health, dental floss or interdental brush, ordors in the mouth. Also variables related with gingival inflammation are considered as tooth brush before bed time, tongue pain, orders in the mouth, the cold as ice tooth and tooth scaling experience. In summary, Oral health education is needed to increase the motivation of industrial workers to control their basic dental disease.

Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) is a disorder of storage in which there is excessive accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) from lysosomal enzyme defect. Lysosomal accumulation of GAGs eventually results in cell, tissue and organ dysfunction. This patient may manifest mental retardation and physical disorders. This clinical report presents a girl with MPS having severe gingival hyperplasia. Gingivectomy was performed under general anesthesia. The pediatric dentist must be aware of oral manifestations present in the MPS. The approach to dental management will require teamwork between the dentist and the patient's physician.

Gingival fibromatosis is a rare oral condition that is characterized by proliferative fibrous overgrowth of the attached gingiva, the marginal gingiva, and the interdental papilla, typically presenting in the growth period. A case of a 27-month-old girl with a generalized severe gingival overgrowth is described herein. The patient had no known systemic disease, but enlarged gingival tissue had gradually covered her teeth. The excess gingival tissue was removed by conventional gingivectomy, which involved extraction of the retentive primary teeth under general anesthesia when she was 5 years old. Post surgical follow-up at 18 months after the surgery demonstrated no recurrence. Resectional surgery of the enlarged gingival tissue is the treatment choice for gingival fibromatosis, although there is a high risk of recurrence. More frequent professional follow-ups and oral hygiene instruction might be required. A delay in the surgical treatment may have significant consequences for the patient, such as primary dentition retention and consequent delay in the eruption of the permanent teeth, difficulties in mastication and phonation, malpositioning of the teeth, and psychological problems. Early surgical treatment should be performed according to the severity of enlargement.

Sturge-Weber Syndrome is a rare congenital disorder and is characterized by port wine nevus following one or more divisions of trigeminal nerve, ocular involvement(eg, glaucoma) and neurologic involvement(eg, epilepsy, mental retardation). Oral menifestations include unilateral blood vessel expansion of the oral mucosa and gingiva, gingival hyperplasia, giant tooth, ipsilateral large tongue, blood vessel anomaly of maxilla or mandible and abnormal eruption sequence. This case report is about 8-year-old Sturge-Weber Syndrome patient presented violet discoloration on upper gingiva and buccal mucosa, gingival hyperplasia and abnormal eruption sequence. In this case, we performed lingual frenectomy and periodic oral hygiene management, and obtained satisfactory result.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the oral symptoms experienced by adolescents according to Body Mass Index. We analyzed the data using the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey and conducted complex-sample descriptive statistics on 55,728 participants. The prevalence of sensitive teeth, tooth pain, gingival bleeding, and swelling was highest in the overweight group (36.8%, 23.9%, and 19.2%) and lowest in the underweight group (34.6%, 20.8%, and 17.0%) (p<0.001). Tooth pain, gingival bleeding, and swelling were significantly higher (all 1.08) in the overweight group than in the normal group. Halitosis was 1.19-and 1.43-higher in the overweight and obese groups, respectively. The relationship between systemic diseases and oral health among adolescents should be further investigated.
