  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine how the mesio-distal angulation and the length of each tooth changes on panoramic radiograph at different bucco-lingual inclinations. Methods: After constructing an acrylic model based on the mean arch of 30 adults with normal occlusion, the wire was placed in the center of the teeth on the acrylic model. First, the wire was implanted in normal angulation and inclination and a panoramic radiograph taken. After changing the inclination from $I-5^{\circ}\;to\;I+15^{\circ}\;by\;5^{\circ}$, a panoramic radiograph was taken again and the mesio-distal angle and wire length on the panoramic radiograph were assessed. Results: When the wire was implanted at the normal angulation and inclination, the length measured in the panoramic radiograph was magnified $111{\sim}117%$ from the original length in the anterior region and $121{\sim}125%$ in the posterior region. Only the central and lateral incisors showed significant length differences when the inclination was changed from $l-15^{\circ}\;to\;I+15^{\circ}$ at fixed angulation. When the inclination was changed from $l-15^{\circ}\;to\;I+15^{\circ}$, the angulation of most teeth on panoramic radiograph appeared to be more disto-angulated than in reality, and the lateral incisor and canine showed the largest difference. Only $l-15^{\circ}\;to\;I+15^{\circ}$ groups of premolars and $I+15^{\circ}$ group of molars showed more mesio-angulation than in reality. As the labio(bucco)lingual inclination of all teeth were decreased, tooth angulation in the panoramic radiograph appeared to be more disto-angulated. Conclusion: The labio-liugual inclination of teeth should be considered because it affects panoramic image of teeth, such as length of incisors and angulation of other teeth.

  • The purpose of this study was to obtain the angulation and inclination of FACC of all teeth to FH plane. Study models of 31 persons with normal occlusion were selected and mounted on the semiadjustable articulator for this study. Using T.A.R.G. with a little modified method, the angulation and inclination of FACC of all teeth to FH plane were measured and then the measurements were analyzed statistically. The obtained results were as follows. Mean, standard deviation, maximum value, and minimum value of the angulation and inclination of FACC of upper and lower teeth were obtained. $\cdot$The FACC in both upper and lower arch was progressively lingually-inclined from anterior teeth to posterior teeth. $\cdot$In the angulations of FACC of upper teeth, central and lateral incisor showed similar value. Yet, the FACC of the rest was progressively distally-angulated from the canine to posterior teeth. The FACC in lower arch was progressively mesially-angulated from anterior teeth to posterior teeth. $\cdot$The angulation and inclination of FACC of any tooth in both upper and lower teeth correlated strongly and positively with the angulation and inclination of FACC of adjacent tooth.

  • Most of orthodontic cases are treated with extraction of certain teeth, which influence the pre-eruptive movement of the lower third molar The purpose of this study was to evaluate the positional change of lower third molar following orthodontic treatment. Pre- and post-treatment pantomograms of 163 orthodontic patients (77 nonextraction group, 78 first premolar- extraction group, 8 second molar- extraction group) were analyzed in terms of the mesiodistal and buccolingual angles of lower third molar. The results were as follows. 1. The change of the mesiodistal angle of lower third molar by orthodontic treatment was significant in second molar-extraction group. 2. The mesiodistal angle of lower third molar in pre-treatment was significantly correlated to the mesiodistal angle in post-treatment and/or the change of the mesiodistal angle by treatment. 3. The change of the buccolingual angle of lower third molar by orthodontic treatment was significant in non -extraction group or first premolar-extrction group. 4. The change of the buccolingual angle of lower third molar by treatment was significantly correlated to the mesiodistal angle in post-treatment, the change of the mesiodistal angle by treatment, the buccolingual angle in pre-treatment or the buccolingual angle in post-treatment.

  • This study examined the relations between degree of posterior dental compensation and skeletal discrepancy in Class III malocclusion. The pretreatment lateral cephalogras and dental casts of 87 skeletal Class III adults were selected to provide a random sampling of skeletal Class III malocclusion. Skeletal discrepancy was described with ANB angle, Wits appraisal, SN-Mn plane angle, FMA and ratios of basal arch width. Degree of posterior dental compensation was described with maxillary intermolar angle, mandibular interolar angle and sum of intermoloar angle. The relationships between skeletal discrepancy and degree of posterior dental compensation were analyzed with simple correlation analysis, stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results were as follows 1. A strong association was found between the variation in the anteroposterior measure, ANB angle and the variation of posterior dental compensation measures, sum of intermolar angle and mandibular intermolar angle in skeletal Class III malocclusion. 2. There was no statistically significant relationship between the variation in the vertical measures and the variation of posterior dental compensation measures in skeletal Class III malocclusion. 3. There was no statistically significant relationship between the variation in the anteroposterior and vortical measures and degree of basal arch width discrepancy.

  • The convergence angle of a prepared tooth is a very important factor in the retention and resistance of a crown restoration. But various intraoral environments and clinician's techniques make it difficult to obtain the ideal inclination. Therefore, in this study, clinical convergence angle of a prepared tooth was investigated. The data was collected from the patient models of prosthodontic residents and the patient models of general practitioners. The images of mesiodistal and buccolingual surfaces were taken with a digital camera to evaluate the convergence angle on 'ImageJ' program. The images were classified according to the criteria (1. Clinician group, 2. Position in the dental arch, 3. The purpose of abutment preparation)and then analyzed. The mean convergence angle of a prepared tooth for Korean clinicians was $15.02^{\circ}$ (${\pm}10.13^{\circ}$). 1. It was significant in the convergence angle between the general practitioner group and the prosthodontic resident group(p<0.05). 2. It was significant between the mesiodistal and buccolingual surface in the the prosthodontic resident group(p<0.05). 3. For the general practitioner group, it was significant when anteriors and premolars were compared with molars(p<0.05). For the prosthodontic resident group, it was significant when anteriors and premolars were compared with molars (p<0.05). 4. When divided into upper and lower arches, for the general practitioner group, it showed significant difference in the buccolingual aspect(p<0.05). Also in the prosthodontic resident group, it showed significant difference in the buccolingual aspect(p<0.05). 5. Dividing left and right sides of the arches, there was no significant difference in the general practitioner group and the prosthodontic resident group(p>0.05). 6. In the general practitioner group, it was significant in the mesiodistal axial convergence angle of single crown abutment and 3 unit bridge abutment(p<0.05). In the prosthodontic resident group, it was significant in the mesiodistal and overall axial convergence angle of single crown abutment and 3 unit bridge abutment(p<0.05). Clinical convergence angle of prepared tooth in Korea was included in agreement with other studies investigating convergence angle that ranged from 10 to 22 degrees, achieved in clinical practice.

  • Precise bracket positioning is essential in modem orthodontics. However, there can be alterations in the vertical position of a bracket due to several reasons. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of variations in the vertical bracket position on the crown inclination in Korean patients with normal occlusion. From a larger group of what was considered to be normal occlusions obtained from the Department of Orthodontics, College of Dentistry, Seoul National University, each of the final 10 subjects (6 males and 4 females, with an average age of 22.3 yews) was selected. The dental models of each of the subjects were scanned three-dimensionally by a laser scanner, and measurements drawn from these were made on the scanned dental casts of the subjects were input into the computer program. From this the occlusal plane and the bracket plane were determined. The tooth plane was then constructed to measure the crown inclination on the bracket plane of each tooth. From a practical standpoint, information was obtained on the extent to which the torque of a tooth would be changed as the bracket position was to be moved vertically (in ${\pm}0.5mm,\;{\pm}1.0mm,\;{\pm}1.5mm$) from its ideal position. A one way analysis of the variance (ANOVA) was used to compare each group of the different vertical distances from the bracket plane on a specific tooth. Duncan's multiple comparison test was then performed. There were statistically significant differences in the crown inclination among the groups of different vertical distances for the upper central incisor, upper lateral incisor, upper canine, upper first and second molars, lower first and second premolars, and lower first and second molars (p<0.05). On the upper anterior teeth, upper molars, lower premolars and lower molars, the resultant torque values due to the vertical displacement of the bracket were different depending on the direction of the displacement, occlusal or gingival. This study implies that the torque of these teeth should be handled carefully during the orthodontic treatment. In circumstances in which the bracket must be positioned more gingivally or occlusally due to various reasons, it would be useful to provide the chart of torque alteration of each tooth referred to in this study with its specified bracket prescription.

  • This study was performed to locate the anteroposterior position of the center of resistance of upper anterior teeth when intrusive forces are acted on them by applying segmented arch mechanics. Three-dimensional finite element model of upper six anterior teeth, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone was constructed The locations of the center of resistance were compared according to the three variables, which are number of teeth contained in anterior segment, axial inclination of anterior teeth, and degree of alveolar bone loss. The following conclusions were drawn from this study; 1. When the axial inclination and alveolar bone height were normal, the locations of center of resistance of anterior segment according to the number of teeth contained were as follows; 1). In 2 teeth segment, the center of resistance was located in the distal area of lateral incisor bracket 2) In 4 teeth segment, the center of resistance was located in the distal 2/3 of the distance between the brackets of lateral incisor and canine. 3) In 6 teeth segment, the center of resistance was located in 3mm distal of canine bracket, which is interproxirnal area. between canine and 1st premolar. 4) As the number of teeth contained in anterior segment increased, the center of resistance shifted to the distal side. 2. As the labial inclination of incisors increased, the center of resistance shifted to the distal side. 3. As the alveolar bone loss increased, the center of resistance shifted to the distal side.

  • In the previous studies about prescription of preadjusted appliance, occlusal plane was used as a reference plane for crwon angulation (tip) measurement. But this reference plane is not parallel to the line connecting the facial axis points at which the centers of brackets are positioned (Andrews' plane), due to the curve of Spee. Therefore, we developed a new reference plane unaffected by the curve of Sun and more parallel to the Andrews' plane. It is an imaginary line connecting mesial and distal marginal ridges of each posterior tooth, and we named it 'marginal ridge plane'. In this study, crown angulations of posterior teeth of 29 normal occlusion samples were measured and measurements from both reference planes were compared. Crown angulation measurements measured from occlusal plane were different from crown angulation measurements from marginal ridge plane in the upper and lower 2nd molars (p<0.01), md 1st premolars (p<0.05). These results were analyzed as the crown angulation measurements from occlusal plane were affected by the curve of Spee. Crown angulations should be varied according to the amount of curve of Spee to maintain the continuity of marginal ridges. To solve this problem, determining bracket angulation as the bracket slot is parallel to the marginal ridge plane of each posterior teeth is recommended.
