  • This study was undertaken to establish the cephalometric standard of Hellman dental age IVA group of Korean. The subjects consisted of 40 males and 44 females with normal occlusion and aceptable profile. The results were obtained. 1) The tables of standard deviation from the measurements were made. 2) All linear measurement was greater in male than in female. 3) Female had more convex profile than male, 4) Facial convexity, upper and lower lip of esthetic line were gradually decreased with. age. 5) Upper incisor was gradually labioversioned with age.

  • This study was undertaken to estabish the cephalometric standards of Hellman dental age III A group of Korean on the roentgenocephalometry. The subjects consisted of 26 males and 29 females with the normal occlusion and acceptable profile. The following conclusions were obtained; 1) The tables of mean and standard deviation were made from the measurements of both male and female. 2) A ll linear measurements in male were greater than those in female. 3) Mandibular growth rate of female was greater than that of male. 4) Comparision of the childern in Hellman dental age III A with those in the late primary dentition indicated the tendency of facial vertical growth.

  • In orthodontic field, the study on gnathostatic model is very important to the diagnosis and analysis of malocclusion. The purpose of this study is to observe that relation of orbital plane and upper canine in Koreans. We selected 230 cases with normal occlusion, 124 male and 106 female cases aged from 12 years to 25 years, to prepare 230 gnathostatic models, and measured the distance from midpoint of mesio-distal distance of upper canine to orbital plane in gnathostatic model. The results obtained were as follows: 1) The mean value of the distance from upper canine to orbital plane showed no significant change with age. 2) The mean value of the distance from the upper canine to orbital plane was -3.11mm in male and -3.84mm in female. 3) The orbital plane passed through the upper canine in normal occlusion of Koreans.

  • The templates for male and female were constructed respectively by use of 36 male and 52 female cephalometric roentgenograms in Hellman Dental Age IV A with normal occlusion. The grids were drawn to show 1 standard deviation and 2 standard deviation on every reference point. 1. When the template is used for cephalometric analysis, w e can obtain comparatively accurate diagnosis even one or two refernces are distorted, because several references are used for analysis. 2. The method of using the template is simple enough to perform cephalometric analysis easily. 3. If the templates are constructed for every age and sex, we can predict the growth patterns of the patients in the period of growth.

  • The author measured the right and left craniofacial skeleton using posteroanterior cephalography of 124 male and 97 female subjects of ages ranging 2-6 years, 7-13 years and adult group on Korean. Statstical parameters were calculated by computer from the data. The results of the study were as follows. 1. In the male and female group of deciduous dentition, the right side measurements were slightly greater than the left side measurements, and generally male measurements were greater than female measurements. 2. In the both sex group of mixed dentition, the right side measurements were greater than the left side measurements, and in comparision of sex, the female recognized more growth, and development than male, especially on the cranial base, lateral maxilla, lower maxilla and dental region. 3. In the permanent dentition group, regardless of sex, the right side measurements were greater than the left side measurements, and in the sex difference, male was conspicuously greater than female on both sides measurements. 4. In the permanent dentition group, the asymmetry of the face was striking than deciduous dentition and mixed dentition group.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the exact values of the cephalometric standards of Hellman dental age III B groups of Korean in the reontgenocephalometry. The subjects consisted of 25 males and the same number of females with the normal occlusion and acceptable profile. Each lateral cephalometric head film was taken with the teeth in occlusion and the Focal-film distance was 300cm. Their linear and angular measurements were made directly. The following conclusions were obtained; 1) The author made the tables of standard deviation from the measured values. 2) The degree of the facial convexity of Korean children was larger than that of the white. 3) The labial inclination of the lower central incisor in male was a little greater than that in female.

  • The author intended to observe the developmental pattern in mandibular bone and condyle following the loss of function of molar with 5 week-old rats b y means of removing the crown of molar. The bjects were observed everyweek during six weeks. The results were as follows ; 1. Bone apposition was observed at the root apex and interadicular area of alveolar bone. 2. Development of bone substance in mandible tended to increase in the narrow bone trabeculae and fibrous bone substance. 3. Development of condylar head showed little difference from that of control group and development of calcified zone appeared more or less poorly.

  • The committee of admitted doctors developed a questionnaire regarding medical dispute and distributed it to 1,600 members of Korean Academy of Orthodontics. The questionnaire consisted of three categories and 56 items covering basic information about the doctors and patients who had experienced medical disputes, the cause and workaround of medical accidents, and methods for taking precautions. The present survey showed a similar proportion of responders who had experienced a medical accident compared to the study in 1997. The primary reason for medical disputes was dissatisfaction with appearance. Many doctors felt that they would likely experience a medical dispute at some point. Most disputes were settled by doctors themselves, usually for an amount of less than 5 million Korean won. For some doctors, medical accidents lead to ongoing psychological problems. Responders felt that continuing education for medical dispute is very necessary. These results reveal a need for the association of orthodontists to lead advancements in education and countermeasures for preventing and managing medical accidents and disputes.

  • Because of the potential morbidity and complications associated with surgical procedures, limiting the extent of orthognathic surgery is a desire for many orthodontic patients. An eighteen-year-old woman had a severe Class III malocclusion and required bi-maxillary surgery. By changing the patient's maxillary occlusal plane using orthodontic mini-implants, she was able to avoid the maxillary surgery; requiring only a mandibular setback surgery. To accurately predict the post-surgery outcome, we applied a new soft tissue prediction method. We were able to follow and report the long-term result of her combined orthodontic and orthognathic treatment. The changes to her occlusal plane continue to appear stable over 6 years later.
