Objective: To standardize the facial soft-tissue characteristics of South Korean adults according to gender by measuring the soft-tissue thickness of young men and women with normal facial profiles by using three-dimensional (3D) reconstructed models. Methods: Computed tomographic images of 22 men aged 20 - 27 years and 18 women aged 20 - 26 years with normal facial profiles were obtained. The hard and soft tissues were three-dimensionally reconstructed by using Mimics software. The soft-tissue thickness was measured from the underlying bony surface at bilateral (frontal eminence, supraorbital, suborbital, inferior malar, lateral orbit, zygomatic arch, supraglenoid, gonion, supraM2, occlusal line, and subM2) and midline (supraglabella, glabella, nasion, rhinion, mid-philtrum, supradentale, infradentale, supramentale, mental eminence, and menton) landmarks. Results: The men showed significantly thicker soft tissue at the supraglabella, nasion, rhinion, mid-philtrum, supradentale, and supraglenoid points. In the women, the soft tissue was significantly thicker at the lateral orbit, inferior malar, and gonion points. Conclusions: The soft-tissue thickness in different facial areas varies according to gender. Orthodontists should use a different therapeutic approach for each gender.
This article describes the orthodontic treatment of a 31-year-old Korean female patient with gummy smile and crowding. The patient showed excessive gingival display in both the anterior and posterior areas and a large difference in gingival heights between the anterior and posterior teeth in the maxilla. To correct the gummy smile, we elected to intrude the entire maxillary dentition instead of focusing only on the maxillary anterior teeth. Alignment and leveling were performed, and a midpalatal absolute anchorage system as well as a modified lingual arch was designed to achieve posterosuperior movement of the entire upper dentition. The active treatment period was 18 months. The gummy smile and crowding were corrected, and the results were stable at 21 months post-treatment.

This case report illustrates the successful treatment of a patient with skeletal Class II malocclusion and an unesthetic smile involving excessive gingival display and large buccal corridors. By applying dual buccal interradicular miniscrews, total intrusion of the maxillary dentition along with distalization was induced to improve both the occlusion and smile esthetics. In addition to the conventional cephalometric superimposition, three-dimensional superimposition was performed and evaluated to validate the treatment outcome.
Orthodontic treatment of a complex case that involves retained deciduous mandibular second molars with missing permanent successors is challenging. Usually, congenitally missing teeth are manifested with other dental anomalies that further complicate orthodontic treatment, such as retained deciduous teeth, impactions, transpositions and peg-shaped lateral incisors. Even though the long term prognosis of the retained deciduous tooth is not fully predictable, if the teeth are in good condition, the patient and clinician may incline towards a decision to preserve the deciduous teeth as long as possible. This case report demonstrates that deciduous teeth, in this case the mandibular second molars and maxillary canine, can be incorporated into final occlusion with clinically stable long-term results.
Recently, straight-wire appliance is widely used with great concern in clinical orthodontic field. The purpose of this study was to collect the information of the straight-wire appliance and to determine the crown inclination in clinical orthodontics. The author analyzed the study model of 78 individuals with normal occlusion. The obtained results were as follows. 1. Mean, maximum value, minimum value and standard deviation of crown inclination of upper and lower teeth were obtained. 2. The lingual crown inclination of upper tooth had constant value from first premolar through second molar, the lingual crown inclination of lower tooth progressively increased from canine through second molar. 3. As Howes' ratio was decreased, the crown inclination of upper incisors was increased. 4. Narrowing the upper arch, the crown inclination of upper incisors was increased.
The author studied on the tongue position, tongue space and intermaxillary space at 4 groups; normal occlusion 30 cases, Angle's Class I bimaxillary protrusion 29 cases, Angle's Class II malocclusion 26 cases, Angle's Class III malocclusion 26 cases. This study used the data from cephalometric films of female subject aged from 16 to 23 years. Following results were obtained; 1. Dorsal height in Angle's Class III malocclusion was greater than normal occlusion. 2. Anterior Intermaxillary Height in Angle's Class I bimaxillary protrusion and Angle's Class III malocclusion was greater than normal occlusion. 3. Tongue space in Angle's Class I bimaxillary protrusion was greater than normal occlusion. 4. The ratio of the tongue space to the intermaxillary space (T.S./I.S.) in Angle's Class II malocclusion was greater and the ratio in Angle's Class III malocclusion is lesser than normal occlusion.
The present paper describes 4 clinical cases of Hellman dental age III A group of functional Class III malocclusion in which the horsehoe appliance was applied to obtain normal anteroposterior relationship between jaws. What is the most noteworthy in the result from the use of this appliance is that minimum down and backward rotation during backward repositioning of the mandible is noticed and the excellent retentive property in itself makers allowance for effective orthopedic correction in mixed dentition with anterior crossbite.
This study was undertaken to examine the extent to which tooth size and jaw size each contribute to dental crowding. Two groups of dental casts were selected on the basis of dental crowding. One group, consisting of 94 pairs of dental casts (46 males and 48 females) with normal occlusion. A second group, consisting of 84 pairs of dental casts (98 males and 46 females) with crowding. The results were as follows. 1. Means and standard deviations of the two groups were used to compare the two groups. 2. Significant differences were observed between two groups on the basis of tooth size, arch dimension and arch perimeter. 3. Between noncrowded group and crowded group, was crowded group was found to have large troth size than noncrowded group, while smaller arch dimension and perimeter. 4. Significant differences were observed between males and females on the basis of tooth size, arch dimension and arch perimeter. 5. Author found ideal arch shape of normal occlusion.
Indirect bonding is done by placing the brackets on a model in the laboratory and using a template or tray to transfer the laboratory positioning to the teeth. The advantages of this technique are 1. decreased chair time 2. less patient discomfort 3. accuracy of a attachment placement 4. good adaptation of attachment to tooth contour 5. occlusal relationship of brackets and opposing teeth can be checked The disadvantages of the technique are 1. complex laboratory procedure 2. sometimes difficult on very short clinical crowns 3. teeth with crowns, large buccal restoration will not bond 4. may not be fitted close, if poor adaptation 5. likely to be disturbed setting Several indirect bonding techniques have proved reliable in clinical practice. However, they differ in the way the brackets are attached temporarily to the model, the type of transfer tray or other mechanism used, the adhesive or sealant employed, whether segmented or full bonding used, and the way the transfer is removed so as not to exert excessive force on a still maturing bond.
The aim of this study was to clarify whether bonding/debonding procedure will affect the occurance of enamel crack. The frequency of enamel crack was compared between before-bonding and after-debonding on 200 human extracted teeth. Each facial surface of the tooth was divided in 9 fragments. A presence of crack, which was classified by its direction as vertical, horizontal and oblique crack, was surveyed in each fragment. Number of all cracks in facial surface was 1355 at before-bonding, and 1605 at after-debonding, so it revealed significant increase rate of $18.5\%$, but compared by fragment, cracks were significantly Increased in OC, OD, CC and GC fragments. All kinds of cracks were significantly increased, especially increase rate of oblique crack reached $54.9\%$. The increase rate of cracks was not superior at any fragment or region, but some evidence was seen in CC fragment. Judging from the above, increase of crack is unavoidable with bonding/debonding procedures.
