  • Through-the-thickness properties of thick-walled cylindrical composites are required to determine structural performances because interlaminar tensile stress is primarily responsible for structural failure of the composites during their curing process. It is necessary for evaluating the tensile properties to find individual test methods to find appropriate methods because there are no recognised international standards(test methods and test specifications) available for generating reliable tensile properties in the direction. This paper has performed an experimental study to measure that properties of carbon fabric/phenolic composites which are produced by domestic company. Several test methods using an aluminum specimen were compared and evaluated. The best test method to measure transverse through-the-thickness properties of composite materials was developed by the experimental results that strain trends on all faces of composite specimen are the same.

  • In this study, DCB(double cantilever beam) specimens of woven fabric carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy were manufactured and mode I fracture toughness of specimen was measured according to ASTM 5528-01. And FE analysis was conducted in the same condition and evaluated the behavior of delamination analytically. Mode I fracture toughness measured by test was $845.7\;J/m^2$ in the case carbon/epoxy and that of glass/epoxy was $1,042\;J/m^2$. FE analysis was conducted using cohesive elements for adhesive layer and applied measured fracture toughness. To verify the result of analysis, the reaction force measured at the end of specimen and that calculated by Timoshenko beam theory were compared. The numerical results show good agreements with the measured one.

  • This study investigates free vibration characteristics of laminated composite structures with different embedded delamination sizes and locations using the solid element. The three-dimensional finite element (FE) delamination model described in this paper, in comparison with the conventional approaches, is more attractive not only because it shows better accuracy but also it shows the entire mode shape. The FE model using ABAQUS is used for studying free vibrations of laminates containing an various embedded delamination. The numerical results obtained are in good agreement with those reported by other investigators. In particular, new results reported in this paper are focused on the significant effects of the local vibration mode for various parameters, such as size of delamination, aspect ratio, and location of delamination.

  • In Fe/Gd multilayers, patterning effect on the interlayer coupling was studied by comparing patterned and unpatterned samples that were cut from a multilayer film. A comparative study of the two samples via temperature dependent Gd-specific magnetization vector using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) shows that the temperature dependence of the Gd magnetization vector can be modified in the patterned sample due to a competition between the patterning and antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling effects.

  • To evaluate the seismic capacity of a multistorey building structures in performance based seismic design, it is needed to convert MDOF model into equivalent SDOF model. This paper presents predictions for interstory drift of multistorey structures using method of converting a MDOF system into an equivalent SDOF model. The principal objective of this investigation is to evaluate appropriateness of converting method through performing nonlinear time history analysis of a multistory building structures and an equivalent SDOF model. Comparing the interstory drift of multistorey structures calculated by time history analysis and those evaluated by an equivalent SDOF model, the adequacy and the validity of converting method is verified. The conclusion of this study is following; A method of converting a MDOF system into an equivalent SDOF model through the nonlinear time history response analysis is valid. Inelastic first mode shapes are expected to be more accurate than elastic first mode shapes in obtaining interstory drift of multistorey structures from equivalent SDOF model.

  • In this study, we aimed to make antibiotic-intercalated smectite composites using amoxicillin and clarithromycin as hygroscopic antibiotics, and gentamicin, tobramycin and netilmicin as non-hygroscopic aminoglucosides, and to check their drug delivery potential in gastric system using preliminary in-situ column release test for clarithromycinsmectite composite. All antibiotics were successfully intercalated into the interlayer of smectite by cation-exchange reaction in the batch experiment. Equilibrium batch test showed that clarithromycin-intercalation followed Langmuir isotherm and the possible maximum amount was calculated as 1.811 mmole/g. Clarithromycin was continuously released by the solutions of pH=2, 3, and 4 and the amount was decreased with pH increase.

  • This paper reports a novel method for simultaneous exfoliation of graphene and dispersion of carbon nanotube by using intercalation method. In common, graphene flake and carbon nanotubes can be produced through individual exfoliation or debundling process, but the process require significant amount of time. Here, potassium sodium tartrate was thermally intercalated into graphite and carbon nanotube bundle for simultaneous exfoliation and dispersion of graphene and carbon nanotubes. We confirmed expansion of interlayer distance via XRD, and also found that oxidation level of the exfoliated materials were significantly low (below 8.3 at%). The produced materials are fabricated in to conductive composite film via vacuum filtration and spray deposition to show enhancement of conductive properties.

  • The potential use of modified clays in the adsorption of vapor phase benzene and toluene was investigated. The modified clays OC-CPC, IOC, and Al-PILC were prepared for comparative purposes and were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction. It was confirmed the intercalation of the aluminium pillar in IOC and Al-PILC, as well as the introduction of cetylpyridinium. The adsorption studies showed a great affinity of benzene and toluene for OC-CPC due to the hydrophobic character that resulted and also to the increase in the interlaminar distance. IOC showed a lower affinity for the benzene and toluene, followed by Al-PILC. Natual clay had no affinity for benzene and toluene due to its hydrophilic nature. Clay materials having a laminar structure can be chemically modified, changing their physiochemical characteristics, such as interlaminar distance, surface area, pore size, and chemical affinity. In this study, it was focused on obtaining modified clays to be used for the adsorption of volatile organic chemicals.
