  • The objective of this research was to provide basic information of Thuja orientalis stand for prediction system, which consists of the best model of diameter and basal area. Data was from cores of 45 sample trees of Thuja orientalis stand that was designated as a natural monument (No. 62) in Yeongcheon, Chungbuk. Of the projection functions tested, polymorphic equation using the overlapping data showed higher precision of the fitting than anamorphic equation using. In diameter growth, Schumacher polymorphic equation of $D_2={\exp}({\ln}(D_1)(T_1/T_2)^{0.4495}+3.8535(1-(T_1/T_2)^{0.4495}))$, and in basal area growth, Schumacher polymorphic equation of $BA_2={\exp}({\ln}(BA_1)(T_1/T_2)^{0.1235}+11.3793(1-(T_1/T_2)^{0.1235}))$ showed the highest precision of the fitting among them. The equation, therefore, could be available as basic information for estimation of growth and management of Thuja orientalis stand.

  • This study was investigated to analyze stand structure in Daegu Dodong T.orientalis Forest for conservation Thuja orientalis forest. Results of cluster analysis, it was classified to Quercus variabilis group(A), Quercus variabilis-Quercus mongolica group(B), Pinus densiflora group(C), Thuja orientalis group(D). Charaters of location environments for D group were analyzed that altitude 99.3 m, slope $59^{\circ}$, rock exposure 68.3%, BHA $21.8m^2/ha$ and North West aspects. The MRPP-test, It classified groups, appropriately. Importance value of D group was T. orientalis 85.42, Q. variabilis 1.28, P.densiflora 1.30, Fraxinus rhynchophylla 3.56 etc. DBH classes of D group were expressed inverted-J-shaped curve. H' was resulted in 0.600~0.834, H'max 1.317~1.466, J' 0.456~0.594, D' 0.405~0.544. Indecator species Analysis were conducted that woody plants were 4 taxa, Herbal plants 9 taxa.

  • We examined endophytic fungi from the needle leaves of three species of conifers in Korea: Abies nephrolepis, Thuja koraiensis, Pinus koraiensis. Endophytic fungi were isolated from the surface-sterilized leaves and identified based on morphological characteristics and Internal transcribed spacer sequences of rDNA. Three species of endophytic fungi isolated in this study were the first reported in Korea: Cryptosporiopsis actinidiae, Pestalotiopsis mangiferae, Pyrenochaeta cava.

  • The natural dyeing of silk fabric with Thuja orientalis extract was investigated. The proper colorant concentration, dyeing temperature, dyeing time, and pH for the dyeing of silk fabric with Thuja orientalis extract were 100% v/v, $80^{\circ}C$, 80 minutes and pH 3, respectively. In various mordanted methods, the K/S values of mordanted methods were higher than those of unmordanted methods with increasing mordant concentration. Light colorfastness and washing colorfastness of Cu or Fe mordanted silk fabric was improved by mordanting. The antibacterial properties of dyed and mordanted silk fabric showed a high reduction rate, and Thuja orientalis extract was showed effective bacterial reduction. The dyed and mordanted fabric with Thuja orientalis extract showed a superior ultraviolet protection property.

  • The effect of Thuja biotae water extract on lipid composition, blood glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride and lipid hydroperoxide was studied in rabbits. In the animalfed Thuja biotae water extract $1m{\ell}/kg\;or\;2m{\ell}/kg$, blood glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride and lipid hydroperoxide was lower values than the control group. The lipid composition of plasma was not great differencies, but palmitic acid $C_{16:0}$ was very elevated with higher than 50%, n-3/n-6 ratio was higher than 0.3 and p/s ratio was higher than 4.0. It was concluded that Thuja biotae water extract may be one of the blood glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride level lowering factor.

  • Effects on noise attenuation of the hedge species, Thuja orientalis L. and Euonymus japonicus Thunb., widely used as road side hedges, were analysed at the frequencies of 1,000, 2,000 and 3,150 Hz., respectively. The present experiments were carried out both in the field and in a Semianechoic Chamber. As increasing the distances from the noise source, attenuation rates of noise level were increased at high frequencies. But the attenuation rates of the noise level at low frequencies showed varied as the distances increased, and this trend appeared to be caused by the influence of ground waves. Generally, in this experiment, Thuja orientalis L., which is a coniferous species, showed more effective on the abilities of noise attenuation than that of Euonymus japonicus Thunb., which is a broad-leaved evergreen species.

  • The description of vegetation cover and floral composition was undertaken in terms of phytosociological study in Dodamsambong(scenic site no. 44) and Danyangseokmoon(no. 45). In this study a total of 17 $relev{\acute{e}}s$ containing 144 taxa were collected and analyzed. Eight plant communities are differentiated, grouped into 4 physiognomic types: forest type(Buxus microphylla var. koreana-Thuja orientalis community, Tilia mandshurica-Quercus variabilis community, and Cynanchum wilfordii-Pinus densiflora community), mantle type(Cardamine leucantha-Neillia uekii community), secondary meadow type(Galium kinuta-Spodiopogon sibiricus community, Diarthron linifolium-Zoysia japonica community), and crevice type(Patrinia rupestris-Selaginella stauntoniana community, Hypodematium glandulosopilosum community). The vegetation of Dodamsambong and Danyangseokmoon is characterized by local flora, such as calciphilous plants, geological distribution-limit species, and endemic species. The soil depth, slope, and human impact have been identified as the most important differentiating ecological factors. Buxus microphylla var. koreana-Thuja orientalis community, Tilia mandshurica-Quercus variabilis community, and Patrinia rupestris-Selaginella stauntoniana community were evaluated highly by National Vegetation Naturalness. In order to restore the value of specific landscape for scenic site, we should improve the problems of protected area such as wrong management on habitat, forest fragmentation by facilities and decline in vegetation by lack of growing the next succession.

  • Essential oil of Thuja occidental leaves was extracted by steam distillation method, and chemical composition of essential oil was analyzed by GC-MS. The essential oil was tested to antimicrorbiaI activity against 28 test microorganisms and antioxident assay through DPPH free radical scaveging test and insecticidal activity by mosquito insecticide assay. The major constituents in the essential oil of T. occidental were monoterpene as d-isothujone, ${\alpha}-thujone$, camphor, L-fenchone, and hornyl acetate. The essential oil have broad antimicrobiaI activity, which showed strong antimicrobiaI activity for Streptococcus pyogenes as bacteria, Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Streptococcus mutans as fungi. The essential oil also showed DPPH free radical scavenging ability at concentration of $36\;{\mu}{\ell}/m{\ell}$. In spraying and fumigation tests, the essential oil had strong insecticidal activity against mosquito.
