The purpose of this study was to investigate the angle formed by the Sella-Nasion(SN) plane and Frankfort-Horizontal(FH) plane and evaluate the correlation and difference of the FH plane to other horizontal reference planes. Through this study we hope to present a basis for selecting a horizontal reference plae which can be implemented in cephalometric studies and in surgical orthodontic treatment planning. 600 subjects were chosen following a clinical examination md lateral cephlometric X-rays were taken. According to cephalometric analysis the subjects were classified into 3 groups , Skeletal Class I malocclusion or normal occlusion group(male 50, female 50), Skeletal Class II malocclusion group(male 50, female 65) and Skeletal Class III malocclusion group(male 50, female 50). The results were as follows. 1. The angle formed by the SN plane and FH plane showed no difference among the malocclusion groups, but there was a significant sex difference. For males the angle measured was $7.47^{\circ}{\pm}2.40^{\circ}$ whereas for females it was $8.93^{\circ}{\pm}2.72^{\circ}$. 2. The angle formed by the SN plane or FH plane and Mandibular plane was higher in females for all malocclusion groups. This angle in the Skeletal Class I malocclusion group was lower than in the other two groups. 3. There was no difference among the sexes or malocclusion groups considering the angle formed by the FH plane and Palatal plane. 4. The genial angle in the Skeletal Class III malocclusion group was higher than in the Skeletal Class I and Class II malocclusion groups in both sexes.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of facemask therapy in patients with Class III malocclusion with two types of bonded expanders covering different numbers of anchored teeth and to compare the anchorage value of two types of bonded expander. Eighteen subjects with Class III malocclusion in early mixed dentition were included in this study, and subjects were divided into two groups based on the number of teeth covered by bonded expander: group 1 (splinting four teeth on each side, 9 subjects) and group 2 (splinting three teeth on each side, 9 subjects). Lateral cephalograms were obtained and assessed before (T1) and after (T2) the treatment. The facemask therapy showed skeletal effects including anterior movement of maxilla and backward rotation of mandible in both groups, with no significant differences between groups. Mesial movement of maxillary molars which indicates anchorage loss of the bonded expander was found in both groups, but significantly larger mesial movement was found in group 2 than in group 1. In conclusion, the value of anchorage was different according to the number of teeth covered by bonded expander as an intraoral anchorage of facemask, but there were no significant differences in skeletal effects.
This study aimed at investigating the skeletal, dentoalveolar, and soft tissue changes of Class III malocclusion cases treated by second molar extraction. The lateral cephalograms of 15 subjects with moderate Class III malocclusion by average ANB $-1.4^{\circ}\;and\;IMPA\;85^{\circ}$ were traced and the computerized superimposition of average craniofacial change was made. The data was gathered and statistically analyzed. The results were as follows: 1 Lower anterior facial height/anterior facial height increased by 0.6%(P<0.01), mandibular plane increased by $1.5^{\circ}$(P<0.05). 2. There was a slightly downward & backward rotation of the mandible. 3. Lower first molar tipped distally by 4.nm(P<0.001), lower anterior teeth lingually tipped by $3.2^{\circ}$(P<0.05). 4. Retracted lower lip improved facial profile. This study may suggest that second molar extraction could be effective for a moderate Class III malocclusion to make distalization of the lower first molar easier and avoid severe lingual tipping of the lower incisor, if the lower third molar has a normal shape, good direction of eruption and adequate time for lower second molar extraction

The purpose of this study was to compare the skeletal maturation of cervical vertebrae according to vertical skeletal patterns in the adolescents. Lateral cephalograms of 198 subjects(10 years old), 216 subjects(12 years old), and 138 subjects(14 years old) were reviewed, and subjects were classified according to vertical skeletal patterns. The 30 subjects were selected with the greatest predominance of vertical growth, and the other 30 subjects, with the greatest predominance of horizontal growth; these subjects comprised the vertical and horizontal groups, respectively. For evaluating of skeletal maturation, the concavity of inferior border and verticohorizontal ratio of cervical vertebrae were observed and measured according to age. The measurements were analyzed statistically by SPSS computerized program. The results were as follows : In general, the concavity of the inferior border of the cervical vertebrae was greater in the horizontal group than the vertical group in all of the 10, 12, 14 year olds, but was not statistically significant. The vertico-horizontal ratio of the 3rd and 4th vertebra of the horizontal groups was a significantly larger than the vertical groups in 12 year olds but did not show any statistical significance in 10 and 14 year olds. There were a weak negative correlations between SUM, FMA and the vertico-horizontal ratio for each groups at 12 ages.
The extraction lot orthodontic treatment can be adopted for aligning crowded dentition, improving facial esthetics and solving a skeletal discrepancy as alternative for a surgical option. Mandibular second premolar extraction was often selected as treatment plan when there we very little or no space shortage in lower arch or limited retraction of the lower incisors was required. The primary object of this study was evaluate a pretreatment condition and examine the amount of tooth movement ior a mandibular second premolar extraction in growing patients. Pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalograms of 14 cases that had their four first premolar extracted (4/4 group), 15 cases with upper first and lower second premolar extraction (4/5 group) were selected. Structural method superimposition was conducted to evaluate a difference of dental change between 4/4 and 4/5 group. The results were as follows, 1. Pretreatment factor for 4/4 extraction or 4/5 extraction choice included maxillary incisor axis to occlusal plane, Class II molar relationship, IMPA and interincisal angle. 2. The amount of molar anterior movement in 4/5 group was greater than that of 4/4 group(p<0.05). 3. There was no significant difference between 4/4 group and 4/5 group in aspects of maxillary tooth movement(p<0.05).

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is a disease characterized by repeated hypopnea and apnea during sleep due to complete or partial obstruction of upper airway. The prevalence of pediatric SDB is approximately 12 - 15%, and the most common age group is preschool children aged 3 - 5 years. Children show more varied presentations, from snoring and frequent arousals to enuresis and hyperactivity. The main cause of pediatric SDB is obstruction of the upper airway related to enlarged tonsils and adenoids. If SDB is left untreated, it can cause complications such as learning difficulties, cognitive impairment, behavioral problems, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and poor growth. Pediatric dentists are in a special position to identify children at risk for SDB. Pediatric dentists recognize clinical features related to SDB, and they should screen for SDB by using the pediatric sleep questionnaire (PSQ), lateral cephalometry radiograph, and portable sleep monitoring test and refer to sleep specialists. As a therapeutic approach, maxillary arch expansion treatment, mandible advancement device, and lingual frenectomy can be performed. Pediatric dentists should recognize that prolonged mouth breathing, lower tongue posture, and ankyloglossia can cause abnormal facial skeletal growth patterns and sleep problems. Pediatric dentists should be able to prevent these problems through early intervention.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of craniofacial morphology in adult with crowded dentition. The craniofacial morphology associated with normal and crowded of mandibular dentition was studied in lateral cephalometric radiograph obtained from 145 subjects grouped 44 males and 40 females in normal group, 33 males and 28 females in crowded group. The conclusions were as follows: Means, standard deviations and facial polygons from measurements were obtained from normal and crowded groups. Palatal plane to SN, occlusal plans to SN, mandibular plane to SN, mandibular plane to palatal plane and gonial angle measurements of crowded group were significantly different from normal group and were larger than normal group. SNA, SNB measurements of crowded group were significantly different from normal group and were smaller than normal group. Significant differences were observed between normal group and crowded groups on the basis of $SN/{\underline{1}}$, PP/1, $MP/{\bar{1}}$, and compared with normal group, upper incisors of crowded group were inclined more labially, whereas lower incisors of crowded group were inclined more lingually. Posterior facial height and ramal height were shorter in males of crowded group than those of normal group. Posterior facial height, mandibular length and posterior cranial base length were shorter in females of crowded group than those of normal group. Anterior facial height was longer in females of crowded group than those of normal group.
Numbers of postulations lie on the difference of integumental changes with two major surgical remedies of one jaw vs. two jaw surgery in skeletal Class III malocclusion. Accordingly it was the aim of the study to elucidate the skeletal profile changes with an accompanying disposition of soft tissues, consequently to yield the correlation and ratio of soft tissue changes with two types of surgical procedures, which in turn make it possible to predict the soft tissue outcomes by means of assembled regression equations. Cephalometric headfilms of fifty two adult skeletal Class III comprised of 26 maxillary advancement by Le Fort I osteotomy and mandibular setback by sagittal split ramus osteotomy simultaneously (double jaw surgery, group A), 26 mandibular setback alone (one jaw surgery, group B) were statistically analyzed. Group A manifested 72.4% soft tissue advancement to skeletal changes in the upper lip area, while group B appeared to have no statistically significant changes. The nasolabial angle showed more increment in group A than in group B, whereas the mentolabial angle illustrated more reduction in group B. The backward movement of soft tissue pogonion to skeletal change revealed 98% in group A, and 109% in group B. The double jaw surgery group characteristically revealed remarkable integ umental change in the upper lip area, while the one jaw surgery had major effects in the lower lip and soft tissue pogonion areas.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the maxillary protraction effects of the Tandem Traction Bow Appliance (TTBA), a new appliance devised several years ago for the treatment of growing skeletal Class III patients. Methods: Participants were 88 Korean children (42 boys, 46 girls) with skeletal Class III malocclusion treated with TTBA at the orthodontic clinic of Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital. Mean age at the start of treatment was 7.5 years${\pm}$1.5 years. Mean treatment periods were $13{\pm}3$ months. Pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalograms were traced and superimposed by the same investigator and analyzed by modified McNamara analysis and pitchfork analysis. Changes were evaluated with paired t-tests at a significance level of p<0.05. Results: The maxilla and maxillary dentition moved forward. The mandible moved backward, although not significantly; and the mandibular dentition moved forward. The net dental changes combined with the apical base change resulted in a favorable total molar relationship correction. Net dental movement was 26% and the apical base change 74% of the total molar relationship correction. Conclusion: These results suggest that TTBA has a maxillary protraction effect that can be useful in the treatment of growing skeletal Class III malocclusion with maxillary deficiency.
Craniofacial growth pattern is an important diagnostic data in the course of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning ; it also has great influence in the establishment of occlusion as well as shaping and development of face. There have been many studies to classify different craniofacial growth patterns and attempts to predict growth patterns. This study aimed to correlate craniofacial growth pattern and symphysis morphology. 120 adult patients with age from 19 to 39 (mean age : 23.1) were chosen as subjects , using lateral cephalometric films. their anterior to posterior facial height ratios were calculated. They were divided into 3 groups - clockwise growth pattern with $56\%-62\%$(36subjects), counter-clockwise growth pattern group with $65\%$-80\%$(43subjects) and normal growth pattern group with $62\%-65\%$(41subjects). Symphysis morphology and Prominence evaluation in each subject were studied and the following conclusions were drawn : 1. In comparison of symphysis morphology between the sex groups, men showed large symphysis height and prominence. 2. Concerning the symphysis morphology, the clockwise growth pattern group showed larger height, H/D ratio and actual length but smaller depth, angle, effective length and E/A ratio compared to the counter -clockwise growth pattern group. 3. Those with smaller prominance of symphysis showed clockwise growth tendency and those with larger prominance showed counter-clockwise growth tendency.
