  • Late Tremadocian radiolarian faunas were first recovered from the Cow Head Group, Newfoundland, Canada. Three faunal assemblages were recognized, one from Martin Point and two from Western Brook Pond in Gros Morne National Park. These radiolarian faunas include six families, 11 genera, and 26 species. In these faunas, six genera (Archeoproventocitum, Cowheadia, Neopalaeospiculum, Protospongentactinia, Protoproventocitum and Westernbrookia) and 17 species (Archeoproventocitum nudiformum, A. retiformum, Aspiculum densum, A. jamesi, A. multistratum, A. gigantium, Cowheadia duplextesta, Neopalaeospiculum densum, N. laxum, N. transformum, Pararcheoentactinia stilla, Protospongentactinia spongiosa, Protoproventocium nazarovii, P. aitchisoni, Westernbrookia cancella, W. diversa, and W. ovata) are new. Late Tremadocian faunas are characterized by the appearance of proventocitiids and diversification of aspiculumids and reduction of protoentactiniids and echidniniids that had flourished in the early Tremadocian faunas. An examination of the biostratigraphic range of co-occurring conodonts indicates that the radiolarian faunas described here belong to the late Tremadocian, from the Lower Diversity Interval through the M. dianae Zone to the lower P. proteus Zone. With the recovery of conodonts of the R. manitouensis Zone from other localities in the study area, the correlation among Martin Point, Western Brook Pond, Broom Point, and St. Paul's Inlet strata has became more precise. Also, the middle and late Tremadocian Cow Head Group can be subdivided into the R. manitouensis Zone, the Low Diversity Interval, and the M. dianae Zone of North America. The lower P. proteus Zone of the latest Tremadocian for northern Europe is recognized in the Western Brook Pond South section.

  • In previous study, scuticociliate P. dicentrachi was isolated from farmed flounder during the december 2004 to april 2005. Pathogenicity, mortality and infection symptom were studied using 3 cm and 5 cm groups of juvenile flounder. The ciliates were exponentially increased from bottom layer of the experimental tanks, which propagated within 2000 cells/ml (1.4 × 103 cell ㎖-1 ~ 2.5 × 103 cell ㎖-1) after 6 days of inoculation. The middle layer was maintained within 300 cells/ml. Both 3 cm and 5 cm groups were infected with ciliates, mainly 3 cm group showed high mortality during the experimental period. The death of 3 cm group was started from 5 days and showed 95.6% of mortality after 28 days of first inoculation. The control group showed 4.4% of mortality however, we could not observed any ciliates. The death of 5 cm group was started later than 3 cm group after 18 days of first inoculation. The total mortality was 71% during 28 days. No mortality and infection symptoms were observed in the control. We also studied SSU rRNA gene of ciliates which, re-isolated from infected flounder of experimental groups. When SSU rRNA in this study compared with previous data showed that the identified strain of both previous and present study was same.

  • Two endemic foci of heterophyid infections were discovered in coastal villages of Puan-gun. Chollabuk-do, and Sachon-gun. Kyongsangnam-do, Korea. Fecal examina- tions were performed on 153 inhabitants of Puan-gun and 138 of Sachon-gun, using cellophane thick smear and formalin-ether sedimentation technique. The helminth egg and/or protozoan cyst positive rate was 21.5% (33/153) in Puan-gun and 39.1% (54/138) in Sachon-gun. In Puan-fun, the egg Positive rate of heterophyids was the highest, 17.6%, and that of other parasites was 0.7-2.6% by parasite species. In Sachon-gun, that of heterophyids wa's 18.8%, followed by Clonorchis sinensis (12.3%). and other parasites (0.7-5.OBEI . Twenth-two (Puan-gun) and six (Sachon-gun) heterophyid egg Positive cases were treated loth praziquantel, and adult flukes were collected from their diarrheic stools. A total of 3,284 adult flukes of Heterophyes nocens was collected from all of the 22 patients treated in Puan-gun (3-778 individually) , and other trematodes were also collected from 2- 15 patients; Ftgidiopsis sumac, Stellcntchcsmus JcEcctus, Metogoninus Wokogaupci, M. miyntci, Stictodora Juscnta, Heterophwopsis continua, Acnnthopcrwphium kurognmo, and GWmnophaELoines seoi. In Sachon-gun, M. yokognwci (3,007 specimens), H. nocens (120), aud S. falcatus (46) were collected from 5 of 6 treated patients, and H. continuo and 5. tan each from one patient. The present study revealed that heterophyid flukes, especially If. nocens and M. Wokofowai, are prevalent in the southern and western coastal areas of Korea where fresh and/or brackish water fishes are popularly eaten raw.
