  • This research explores the relationship between gender equity within family and second birth in Korea. For a factor analysis on the intention of having additional children for women with one child, I have used the data from the 2005 National Survey on Marriage and Fertility Trend" of the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. Among 516 samples(year of 20-44), women planning to have second birth are 54.7%, and others have answered that they have no intention to have second birth. As a result, main causes affecting progressing to second birth seemed to be family planning on family cycle, such as controlling age gaps between first and second child, composing children genders as they wish etc. The variable of "gender equity between couples" in progressing to second birth are of significant only with married working women group. In case of married working women, more the husband's houseworking hours increase, the more prone to progress to second birth. However, in case of housewives, gender equity level, such as husband's housework hours or share of housework are not of significant influence in progressing to second birth. Not only working mothers but also housewives need the realization of gender equity within the family and the expansion of social support system for work-family life balance.

  • This study reviews the relationship between son preference and fertility behavior, and infant and chlid mortality in the context of fertility and mortality decline. In Korea the situation reveals that fertility can decline to a very low level even in the presence of strong son preference, but son preference has certain effects on fertility and childhood mortality. The effect of son preference on fertility increased as the level of fertility declined. Our findings show that son preference causes excess female childhood mortality both directly and indirectly through fertility. Also, in Korea, the analysis reveals that female children suffer excessively high level of mortality and part of the excess mortality is due to parents' behavior on family building related to the effort to secure the birth of a son.

  • This study aimed to identify the factors influencing the intentions of employed married women, aged 19 and above, with no prior experience of childbirth, to give birth to their first child. First, the intention of employed married women to give birth to their first child showed a moderate level of inclination, with slightly higher scores reflected in the subvariables of perceived marital value and perceived child value both within family values, while the effect of perceived gender role value was generally higher than the midpoint. Perception of work-life balance was generally a moderate influence, with the subvariable of balancing work and family being slightly higher than the midpoint in terms of influence. Second, the intention to give birth to a first child was clearly associated with the level of education and showed a positive correlation. However, this intention was negatively correlated with age, perceived child values, perceived marital values, and residential tenure. Third, pregnancy intention was influenced by age, educational level, perceived value of children, perceived value of marrriage, and work-life balance. This study provides meaningful assistance in understanding current low birth rate by gathering data on the preferences of married working women in relation to childbirth and by presenting the diverse perspectives of the women.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of obesity at diagnosis on the prognosis of Korean breast cancer patients after classifying them according to their reproductive history and age by comparing the overall survival rate (OS) and disease-free survival rate (DFS). This study is a retrospective cohort study using 4181 breast cancer cases at one of the medical centers in Korea during the 3 year period from 2006 to 2008. We confirmed the levels of death and recurrence through a follow-up study completed in May 30. 2015. In conclusion, the parous patients had a lower OS than the non-parous patients (p=.000), and the younger patients below 40 years old had a lower OS and DFS than those who were 40 years old or older (p=.003, p=.000), while obesity did not affect the OS and DFS significantly. However, several subgroups in which obesity affected the OS and DFS were found after classifying the patients according to their reproductive history and age. For the subgroups classified by reproductive history, the obese patients had a lower OS and DFS than the non-obese patients in the subgroup in which the patients have a reproductive history (p=.001, p=.005). For the subgroups classified according to age, the obese patients had a lower OS and DFS than the non-obese patients in the subgroup in which the patients were 40 years old or older (p=.005, p=.014). Obesity affected the OS and DFS in the subgroup in which the patients were 40 years old or older and had a reproductive history (p=.000, p=.003). The results of this study show that obesity has an effect on the prognosis of breast cancer patients in the subgroups classified by reproductive history and age, whereas it has no effect on the OS and DFS of the patients when they are examined in their entirety. It also suggests that appropriate nursing intervention is needed for the subgroups in which obesity has effects on prognosis.

  • Korea has been widely recognized as the most successful country for reversal of the rise in sex ratio at birth (from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s) in a short period of time. However, unusually high sex ratios at birth are still observed in most regions as parity increases. Given that imbalanced sex ratios at high birth orders are mostly due to son-selective abortion, it still remains questionable whether son-selective reproductive behavior has vanished in Korea. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the pattern of changing trends and socioeconomic differentials in sex ratio at birth. Micro-data from birth registration for 2009 are utilized. Attention is focused on analyzing sex ratios at birth in Youngnam region according to age of mother, parity, educational attainment of parents, and occupation of parents. A series of simulations are also conducted in this paper to show how prenatal sex screening and son-selective abortion have affected the level of sex ratio at birth for years 1994, 2005 and 2009.
