  • In piloti-type low-rise RC residential buildings, severe damages have been usually concentrated at piloti stories under the earthquake. In this study, a piloti story was retrofitted by installation of buckling-restrained braces (BRB's) to increase strength and stiffness of piloti story and by application of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheet on columns to avoid the brittle shear and axial failure of columns. To verify this retrofit performance, reversed cyclic lateral load tests were performed on 1:5 scale bare and retrofitted frames. The test results showed that yield strength (43.2 kN) appeared to be significantly larger than design value (30 kN) due to the increase of strength in the compression side, but the stiffness value (11.6 kN/mm) turned out to be approximately one-half of the design value (24.2 kN/mm). The reasons for this difference in stiffness were due to slippage at joint between the frame and the BRB's, displacement and rotation at footing. The energy absorption capacity of the retrofitted frame was 7.5 times larger than that of the bare frame. The change of the number of load cells under the footing from 2 to 1 reduced lateral stiffness from 11.6 kN/mm to 6 kN/mm, which was only three times larger than that of the bare frame (2.1 kN/mm).

  • The perimeter structure in high-rise buildings, which plays a major role in resisting lateral forces, is generally formed by the orthogonal placement of the beam and column, but currently various grid patterns are implemented. In a previous study, the adaptability of the $IsoTruss^{(R)}$ grid (ITG) as a perimeter structure was examined. In this study, a method of estimating the required cross sectional area of a member in a preliminary design is proposed. The members of the perimeter structure are placed in three planes, perpendicular (PPR), parallel (PPL) and oblique (POQ) to the lateral loading, and the stiffness of the members in the POQ was taken into account by projecting them onto the PPL or PPR. Three models are established for member size zoning through the height of the building, in order to investigate the effect of the shear and moment in the calculation of the required cross sectional area. To examine the effectiveness of this study, a 64-story building is designed and analyzed. The effect of the member size zoning was examined by comparing the maximum lateral displacement, required steel amount, and axial strength ratio of the columns. Judging from the maximum lateral displacement, which was 97.3% of the allowable limit, the proposed formula seems to be implemental in sizing the members of an ITG structure at the initial stage of member selection.

  • A calcareous rock slope failed during excavation of the slope for construction of a tunnel entrance. The slope is located at the construction site for widening highway in Yeongwol, Korea. Field surveys, laboratory tests, and numerical analyses were performed to determine the reason for the slope failure. The numerical analysis revealed that the safety factor of the slope before construction of the entrance was less than 1, and that this decreased after construction. After construction of the entrance, the sliding zone of the slope increased and slope stability decreased because the shear strain and plastic zone in the slope over the tunnel entrance showed an increase relative to the lower part of the slope. To enhance the stability of the slope for construction of the tunnel entrance, countermeasures such as rock bolts, rock anchors, and FRP (Fiber glass Reinforced Plastic) grouting were adopted in light of the field conditions. Serial field monitoring performed to confirm the reinforcing effects of the adopted countermeasures revealed a small amount of horizontal deformation of the slope soils, most of the elastic deformation that can regain its former value. In addition, the axial forces of the rock bolt and anchor were more strongly affected by slope excavation during construction of the tunnel entrance than by tunnel excavation or the rainy season, and the axial forces tended to converge after excavation of the tunnel. Therefore, we can confirm that the slope is currently safe.

  • When a fire occurs, the concrete structure's strength decreases by the increasing temperature under the fire in certain condition of constant load. And, the ratio of the axial force is changed by such decreased strength so that the structure is deformed. In this research, considering such case, we have conducted an actual fire test for the concrete lining with constant loading condition and various fire conditions. The specimen adopts the shape condition for small practical specimen defined by the EFNARC and we used 24MPa, 40MPa and 50MPa to analyze the thermal properties by the strength. The ratio of loading is imposed by a certain loading condition based on 20% and 40% of the sectional stress in concrete and MHC Fire is selected to realize the thermal impact of the concrete by rapid increasing temperature. As the result of the experiment, in the same ratio of loading, the 50MPa specimen shows more cracks and spalling as time goes on. The area damaged by the fire, according to the functional criteria of the concrete lining under the fire in ITA, does not satisfy with the standard in lack of 50mm depth from the heating surface at total 200mm lining.

  • This study introduces the development of a precast concrete double-wall, applicable to basement construction in apartment buildings. Unlike traditional precast concrete double walls, the developed double-wall doesn't require specialized manufacturing equipment such as a lathe. The constructability of these advanced technologies was validated through a full-scale mock-up test using the precast concrete double wall. The test specimens were constructed to represent a structural wall with a thickness of 250mm. It was observed that the quality of the in-situ concrete, filled between two single panels of 110mm thickness each, was excellent. The construction efficiency of the developed double-wall system for basement construction in an apartment building was also examined. Expert interviews about installation times of precast concrete elements were conducted to evaluate the speed of the basement floor's installation. The results showed that installation of precast concrete elements, including the proposed double walls, could be completed within 20 to 29 days for a basement in an apartment building. This indicates a three-fold increase in construction efficiency compared to traditional methods relying on in-situ casting.

  • The problem of interaction between the structures interconnected at discrete points as like composite structures, has a attracted considerable attention for a prolonged period of time. Recently, mixed structures are applied for overcoming structural limits by developed countries. In this paper, advanced connection type of mixed structures are presented by numerical approach. Also it is performed on extensive literature review from theoretical method to numerical analysis. For analysing behaviors of mixed structures according to connection type, 2 different connections and 1 reinforced connection are compared by 3D nonlinear numerical analysis. Nonlinear analysis of mixed structures is carried out by utilizing contact elements of a general purpose structural analysis computer program(ABAQUS). By using 6 criteria, each connections are investigated. From this result, proper reinforcing and well designed connection type are proposed. And results also show that the deflections which are induced by discontinuity on mixed structures, has a linear distribution that should decrease as applying proposed connection type.

  • Despite recent modifications to building structural standards emphasizing the seismic stability of building foundations, the current design focus remains solely on vertical support, resulting in insufficient consideration of horizontal loads during earthquakes. In this study, we evaluated the dynamic behavior of inclined tripod micropiles (ITMP), which provide additional seismic resistance against horizontal and vertical loads during earthquakes. A comparison of the dynamic characteristics, such as acceleration, displacement, bending moment, and axial force, of ITMP with a 15° installation angle and normal vertical micropiles with a 0° installation angle was performed using dynamic centrifuge model tests. Results show that under moderate seismic loads, the proposed ITMP exhibited lower acceleration responses than the vertical micropiles. However, when subjected to a long-period strong seismic excitation, such as sine (2 Hz), ITMP showed greater responses than the vertical micropiles in terms of acceleration and settlement. These results indicate that the use of ITMP reduces the amplif ication of short-period (high-f requency) contents compared with the use of vertical micropiles. Therefore, ITMP can be used to enhance seismic performance of structures.

  • Farmers directly spread the livestock manure compost on their arable land as an organic fertilizer. However, there are some difficult problems to solve. first, we are unsure of whether the livestock manure compost can meet the nutritional demand of plant. Second, application of the current powered livestock manure compost to crop land is very difficult work due to heavy weight of compost and its powdered shape. For this reason, this study was carried out to develope high quality pelletized livestock manure compost. In pelletizing process with composted manure, the optimal water content for pelletizing was around 30$\sim$40%. When rice bran was mixed with 5% as a bonding agent on volume basis, the pelletizing effect was remarkably improved. On a dry matter basis, the contents of N and P of manure compost were 1.31%, and 0.58%, respectively. After pelletizing, the contents of compost pelleted were 1.37% and 0.54%, respectively. The same parameters of pelletized compost made by screw type Instrument were 1.37% and 0.53%, respectively. The other hand, N and P content of pelletized compost made by pellet mill type instrument were 1.06% and 0.18%, respectively.
