  • This work studies the performance of an injector for a monopropellant thruster, comparing a conventional and new injector types. The conventional injector consists of 8 nozzles on a convex surface allowing the jet to be diverged. The new injector, we suggested, is an impinging type with nozzle holes on a concave surface. The fuel streams through the nozzle holes are collide at a point on an axial direction, which allow to atomize the liquid streams and to spray more uniformly along circular direction. The performance of the injectors is investigated by using computational fluid dynamics, particle image velocimetry and high speed camera visualization.

  • This paper reports the preliminary firing test performed with an ADN-based monopropellant using a 5 N scale thruster. ADN-based propellant and catalyst was fabricated and catalytic combustion of propellant was characterized by DSC-TG analysis. Although an explosion in the catalyst bed was occurred, high temperature in the catalyst bed obtained and demonstrated catalytic combustion of the propellant. Preliminary test results motivates the research for catalysts with better thermal stability.

  • Atomization characteristics and spatial distribution of the spray emanating from an injector of liquid-propellant thruster are investigated by using dual-mode phase Doppler anemometry (DPDA). Spray characteristic parameters such as the mean velocity, Sauter mean diameter (SMD), and velocity fluctuation are measured at various locations along the spray axis as well as on the radial direction. Those data are quantified in radial profile and also used to scrutinize the correlation between diameter and turbulence intensity of spray droplets. For the better visual grasp, dynamic behavior of spray droplets along the spray stream is presented through the velocity vectors projected on the plane of geometric axis of nozzle orifice and radial coordinate.

  • Spray characteristic parameters such as droplet mean velocity, diameter, and volume flux are measured at various locations of spray in order to investigate the evolutionary feature of droplets exiting from a direct-injection type thruster nozzle-orifice. The experimental results indicate that the large droplets with high velocity at the center of upstream are broken-up into smaller droplets with low velocity due to their continuous momentum loss to surrounding air along with spray evolution toward downstream. Also it is found that the high volume flux expands its distribution in radial direction as a results of spray spreading and dispersion.

  • Various sizes of hydrazine monopropellant thruster have been used on satellite and space launcher vehicle. The test and handling procedure of hydrazine monopropellant thruster are usually difficult because of the toxicity of hydrazine and its decomposition product gases. Therefore, the numerical analysis can help understand the effects of various design parameters and can reduce the time as well as expenses. In this study, the numerical analysis is performed by modelling the catalyst bed as one dimensional porous medium. Thereby, resulting physical phenomena are examined by considering the variation of catalyst bed characteristics incurred by catalyst granule failure.

  • The survivability of the temporary nozzle extension for an accurate thrust measurement in a full-scaled combustor has been investigated through thermal analyses. The effects of nozzle extension materials and the thickness of thermal barrier coating (TBC) have been elucidated. It has been found that thermal survivability cannot be guaranteed without TBC. The maximum temperature of the nozzle extension decreased with increasing TBC thickness. For hot firing tests, the TBC is thought to be indispensable to the thermo-structural survivability of the nozzle extension made of steel.
