Comparison of Growth and Developmental Characteristics of Northern Type Local Garlic Cultivars in Euiseong Region (의성지역에서 재배되는 한지형 마늘의 생육특성 비교)

  • Five local cultivars of northern type garlics (Allium sativum L.) and one of southern type were collected, and their growth and developmental characteristics and productivity were investigated to select a well adaptable cultivar in Euiseong region. Local cultivars used in this experiment were 'Euiseong', 'Yeochun', 'Danyang', 'Jungsun', and 'Yongin' as northern type and 'Namdo' as southern one. The growth characteristic of local garlic cultivars were differed with their ecotypes and 'Namdo', a southern type cultivar, showed higher growth rate at the early growing stage than northern types. However, no clear differences were observed among northern types. Incidence of bolting was low in 'Jungsun' and 'Yongin', while high in 'Euiseong' and 'Yeochun'. In the case of incomplete bolting, however, an opposite trend was showed, thus, high in 'Jungsun' and low in 'Euiseong' and 'Yeochun'. Secondary growth was remarkably low in 'Euiseong'. Considering yield factors, 'Yeochun' seemed to be most promising northern type cultivar in Euiseong region, which showed highest bulb weight and largest cloves with high growth rate at the maximum growing stage. 'Danyang', 'Jungsun', and 'Yongin' seemed to have relatively low productivity in Euiseong region.

Effect of the Short-time Growing Seedling for Bolting Control in Angelica gigas Nakai (참당귀 추대억제를 위한 단기육묘의 효과)

  • This study was carried out to control the decrease of yield and the deterioration of quality of Angelica gigas roots by bolting. This phenomenon resulted from lignificartion and dwarfishness of roots because of bolting formed for inflorescence and fruition. Seedlings were grown for 60,90 and 120 days in nursery of the green house, and transplanted in main field to compare with traditional seedling that grew for 1 year. Growth of the petiole length compare with length and leaf width of aerial parts in nursery showed a remarkably progress, and root characters as root length, root diameter and root weight grew more vigorously in the order of nursery periods. Bolting was not entirely formed in plots transplanted the seedlings which grown for short-time; 60, 90 and 120days, but showed the high bolting rate, 64.3%,in traditional seedling plots. Yield was higher in plots that transplanted short-time growing seedlings than that transplanted traditional seedlings, and among 3 kinds of nursery periods yields were high in the order of nursery periods. For the increase of yield and decrease of bolting rate, it was needed to transplant small seedlings of 3-4g/plant which grew in nursery for 90-120 days.

  • To establish appropriate seed production system in Angelica gigas. Germination of seeds with different bolting years and the growth characters of plants originated from these seeds were in­vestigated. Seed weight from 1st year bolting plant was highest. In germinability according to seeds with different bolting years, seeds from 1st year bolting plant were higher than seeds from 2nd, 3rd years bolt­ing one. In growth characters of plants originated from seeds with different bolting years, as the bolting years became late, root growth increased and top growth decreased, therefore T/R ratio decreased.

Effect of Night-break Treatment on Growth and Flowering of Orostachys japonicus A. Berger (암기중단 처리시기가 바위솔의 생장과 개화에 미치는 영향)

  • Year-round cultivation of a monocarpic plant Orostachys japonicus should be possible in case to controlling floret flowering. To give some information on its year-round cultivation, this study was carried out to examine the effect of night-break treatment time (June 10, Aug. 25) on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Night-break treatment of 2 hours at midnight were done since Aug. 25 and heating were made under $20^{\circ}C$ Samples were taken every 4 weeks from Aug. 25. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample until March 9. Plant height, inflorescence length, number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were greater in the earlier treatment than in the later one. Leaves and bracts, floret, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights showed the same response as plant height did to the night-break treatment time. Florets were more formed in the earlier treatment than in the later treatment in which they were flowered only on March 9, meaning that its year-round cultivation should be possible under night-break treatment before bolting and heating during winter season.

Effect of Root Head Diameter of Seedling on Growth and Bolting Response in Angelica gigas Nakai (묘두직경(苗頭直徑)에 따른 참당귀의 생육(生育) 및 추태반응(抽苔反應))

  • This study was to determine optimal sizeof root top using Suwon 2 selected from the Jinbu local population though pure line selection and five root head diameters of $0.11{\sim}0.30,\;0.31{\sim}0.50,\;0.51{\sim}0.70,\;0.71{\sim}0.90\;and\;0.91{\sim}1.10cm$. Emergence rate, characteristics of top, and root were increased with increasing diameterof seedling root. In the group of root head diameter from 0.51cm to 0.70cm, bolting rate was the lowest being less than 3.3% and root yield was the highest being more than 300kg/l0a. Bolting rate was positively correlated with plant height while showed negatively correlated with root yield. The study showed that the optimum of root head diameter raised seedlings in the open field appeared to be from 0.31 to 0.70cm.

  • (사)한국패키지디자인협회는 2월 23일 코리아디자인센터에서 열린 정기총회에서 임종웅 협회 상임이사를 만장일치 신임회장으로 추대했다. 현재 (주)INA 커뮤니케이션 대표이사와 홍익대학교 시각디자인과 및 대학원 강사로 재직중인 임종웅 회장은 지난 1993년부터 1996년까지 패키지 디자인협회장을 역임한 바 있어 관심이 집중되고 있다. 협회의 분위기 쇄신과 회원들간의 단합을 기대하는 회원들의 뜻에 따라 회장으로 추대된 임종웅 회장을 만나, 향후 협회 운영 계획을 들어보았다.
