  • Orostachys japonicus, called Wasong as herbal medicine and a short day plant, should be artificially kept in long daylength to control anthesis of its florets. The study was done to clarify the effect of daylength (10, 13, 16 hours a day) on growth, morphological characters, and flowering. The treatments were done on August 25 and afterward samples were taken every 2 weeks. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. With longer daylength plant height and inflorescence length were increased but number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were decreased. Leaves and bracts, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights were increased with longer daylength from late September while floret dry weight showed reverse result. Florets formed were the greatest in daylength of 10 hours during September but the least during the other period. Anthesis of the florets was observed only in daylength of 10 hours during October and all the plants from the treatment were flowered.

  • Floret flowering of a monocarpic plant Orostachys japonicus should be controlled to change its harvest time. The study was done to clarify the effect of pinching time of inflorescence with many florets (Aug. 25, Sept. 8 and 22, Oct. 4) on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Night-break treatment of 2 hours at midnight were done since Aug. 25 when afterward samples were taken every 2 weeks to Nov. 4. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. Plant height, inflorescence length and number of leaves including bracts showed significant difference between the treatments because they were sharply increased until each pinching time. Stem diameter did nearly same. Leaf and bract, floret, shoot and total dry weights had similar response to the plant height, but stem and root dry ones did similar response to the stem diameter. Most florets were removed by the pinching treatments after formed ones were increased until each pinching time. Few florets were left after the treatment, meaning that night-break treatment after that could be skipped.

  • Shoot parts of a monocarpic and short day plant Orostachys japonicus have been used as a herbal medicine. The study was carried out to examine the effect of transplanting time (May 30, June 30, July 30) of its seedlings on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Two hours night-break treatment at midnight was done since Aug. 25 when samples were taken afterward every 4 weeks. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. Plant height and inflorescence length became longer with delayed transplanting time. Number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were more and thicker when transplanted on June 30 than two other treatments. Leaves and bracts, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights showed nearly the same result to the number of leaves although floret dry weight were increased as transplanting time was delayed. Although florets were most formed when transplanted on June 30, they were not flowered because of the night-break treatment, meaning that the transplanting time had little effect on its growth and anthesis of the florets.

  • This experiments were carried out to investigate the growth responses of spinach to temperature controlling by shading treatments at different times during the summer, and the effects of environmental parameters on the growth and yield were evaluated. The fourth cultivation was showed maximum temperature at air temperature of 33.1$^{\circ}C$ and soil temperature of 28.6$^{\circ}C$, followed by third, second, fifth and first cultivation. Among the tested temperature decreasing by shading, shading with silver - coated PE film strips was the most effective in lowering greenhouse air temperatures by showing 1.1$^{\circ}C$ decrease as compared to the outside air temperature and 3.1$^{\circ}C$ decrease as compared to the air temperatures inside the non-shaded PE house and 2.3$^{\circ}C$ decrease as compared to the air temperaturese shading with black- coated PE film strips, the soil temperature was showing 2$^{\circ}C$ decrease in both shading treatments than non-shaded PE and outdoor. In first cultivation, difficult cultivated as compared to others period owing to bolting of spinach. This first period was cultivated used two domestic cultivars and six imported cultivars, significantly better growth and higher yield of spinach were recorded in glory, manchuparuk and sunlighr cultivars. The effectiveness of shading on spinach, as expressed by the crop yield increase, was the highest in the planting from July 1 to August 24.

  • To improve regeneration efficiency of Brassica campestris ssp. pekinensis (chinese cabbage) in vitro, the effect of ehtylene inhibitors [AgNO$_3$ and silver thiosulfate (STS)] and optimal age of explantse were investigated. On the effect of ethylene inhibitors either 100 $\mu$M of AgNO$_3$ or 5 $\mu$M of STS enhanced shoot regeneration from cotyledons when it was added in basal shoot induction media(MS salts, B5 vitamine, sucrose 2%, BA 2.0mg/L, NAA 1.0mg/L). But at higher concentrations, AgNO$_3$ induced abnormal shoots, and STS greatly reduced regeneration frequency. On the other hand, the maximum regeneration rate was obtained from the cotyledons taken from 3-day old seedlings. However there was no distinctive effect among the containers used for cultivation. The most optimal condition of root induction was a minimal Murashige and Skoog media containing 0.1 mg/L NAA. In order to induce bolting and flowering from in vitro regenerated chinese cabbage, the plant were healed at 4$^{\circ}C$ for weeks in a cold chamber. When they were planted in pots, the plane produced phenotipically normal flowers and seeds. The overall results suggest that ethylene inhibitors promote regeneration of shoot from cotyledons of chinese cabbage without alleviating fertility.

  • How to estimate the shape of trawl net and ropes of a midwater trawl on full scale was described by implementing a three-dimensional semi-analytic treatment of a towing cable system with the field experiments obtained with the Scanmar system. The shape of trawl net from wingend to the beginning of codend was assumed to be of form $\chi$$^2$/ae$^2$+ y$^2$/be$^2$=(z - c)$^2$/c$^2$, and that of the ropes attached behind otter boards be of form yr = $A\chi$rB. In case of warp length 300m long, the volume of trawl net, the ratio of net height to net width at the mouth of the trawl net, and the inclination angle of float rope were estimated according to the change of towing speed. The volume and the distance between wingtips were increased with increasing towing speed. And the inclination angle of float (or ground) rope was slightly decreased with increasing towing speed.

  • Characteristics of the rootstock formation and flower bud differentiation according to sowing time for production of the high quality rootstock in Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) was investigated. The flower bud initiation was on the 17th of July after sowing in April, the 2nd of July after sowing in May, the 30th of July after sowing in June and the 1st of October after sowing in July. But they didn't differentiate after sowing in August and September. The days required from germination to flower bud initiation and accumulated temperature depended on the weather. If the outside air temperature was high, the days required were less, If the outside air temperature was low, the days required were greater, the accumulated temperature was similar to the days required in this experement, too. The rootstock sown from April to July wasn't good enough to be use because the flower bud differentiation was generated before harvestable weight. the weight of rootstock was sown in September wasn't heavy enough in weight because the outside air temperature was too low for it to grow well. The plant grows slow and steady through out winter. The rootstock sown in August was havestable 200g in 90 days after sowing before the flower bud differentiated. The best sowing time for the production of high quality rootstock of Chico in the climate of Korea is researched to be August.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the effect on survival rate for organophosphate intoxication patients who received trachostomy. This research was conducted to help identify appropriate treatment of patients who received a trachostomy. Methods: This research was retrospectively conducted using the medical records of 141 patients who arrived at the Chosun University Hospital emergency medical center between Jan 2007 and Dec 2010, suffering from organophosphate intoxication. They were placed in two groups including one which received trachostomy as part of their treatment and one that did not. The effect of each variable on mortality was evaluated by regressionanalysis. Results: Of 141 patients with organophosphate intoxication, 105 of them did not tracheostomy and 16 were dead cohorts (15.2%). Their size of pupil was 1mm. Factors such as amount of organophosphate ingested, PAM time after ingestion, average body temperature, arrival time, atropinization time after ingestion, AST/ALT, Bun/Cr all appeared to be significant factors in death cohorts (P<0.05). 36 patients among the total had tracheostomy and 11 ones of them were in dead cohort (30.6%) and their average age was 58 years. The facts affect the state of patients in dead cohort include the amount of intoxication which between $327.27{\pm}194.1ml$, performing intubation 686 mins after intubation, reaching to the hospital after 580mins, injecting PAM 744 mins after intoxication, injecting atropine 627 mins after intoxication. The largest cases of patient's state was found to be stupor with 14 patients (38.9%) the level of Cholinesterase in blood appeared to be significant in dead cohort as $391.00{\pm}353.9IU/L$ (P<0.05). Conclusion: Further planned studies are necessary on the use of tracheostomy for treatment of poisoning victims, especially those intoxicated by organophosphorus insecticides.

  • This study were carried out to find bolting response of cultivation in different regions and to isolate FLC (FLOWERING LOCUS C) homologs in Angelica gigas Nakai. The mean temperature of different regions, ordering in altitude, were as follows: 100 m > 350 m > 530 m > 700 m. The largest amount of rainfall was occurred in the region of 350 m while the longest time of sunshine was occurred in the region of 100 m. The content of soil chemical properties in regions showed pH 6.2 ~ 7.4, T-N 0.17 ~ 26, organic mater $1{\sim}32gkg^{-1}$, $P_2O_5$ ${151{\sim}664_{mgkg}}^{-1}$, exchangeable potassium and calcium and magnesium were 0.78 ~ 1.15, 3.9 ~ 10.0, ${0.7{\sim}3.2_{cmol}}^{+kg-1}$. L5 line of A. gigas was occurred in bolting at all regions, but the bolting ratio was 60.0% in 700 m region with non-mulching treatment. Manchu of A. gigas was not occurred in bolting at all regions. The accumulation bolting ratio of L5 line by non-mulching was higher than that of mulching as 90.4% and 72.8% in 100 m region. The MADS-box transcription factor FLC is one of the well-known examples as a strong floral repressor. We decided to isolate FLC homologs from A. gigas as a starting point of flowering mechanism research of this plant. We have isolated two RT-PCR products which showed very high amino acid sequence homology to Arabidopsis FLC.

  • A new Gomchwi cultivar ‘Gommany’ was bred by crossing between Gomchwi (Ligularia fischeri (Ledeb.) Turcz.) and Handaeri-gomchwi (Ligularia fischeri var. spiciformis Nakai). The selection and investigation of growth and yield characteristics were conducted from 2006 to 2011 in field and greenhouse of Highland Agriculture Research Institute, NICS, Rural Development Administration. The color of petiole ear was purple. Petiole trichome existed, but light of leaf back did not. Density of leaf vein was 5 degree in a newly developed cultivar ‘Gommany’. Plant height, leaf length, leaf width and petiole length were 47.7, 16.3, 21.2, and 31.4 ㎝, respectively in the 3 year of growth characteristics. Plant size was also higher than that of ‘Gondalbi’. Bolting and flowering time were Aug. 5 and Sept. 10, respectively. In contrast, Bolting time of ‘Gondalbi’ showed 25 days quite earlier bolting time compared to ‘Gommany’, Which led to earlier flowering time. ‘Gommany’ showed higher number of leaves (138) per plant compared to ‘Gondalbi’ (130). Furthermore, yield was 97% higher in ‘Gommany’ (1,575 g/plant) than in ‘Gondalbi’ (798 g/plant). ‘Gommany’ showed higher leaf thickness (0.69㎜) than ‘Gonalbi’ (0.46 ㎜), and consequently showed more hardness in leaf characteristics (24.3 ㎏/㎠) compared to ‘Gondalbi’ (23.0㎏/㎠). ‘Gommany’ showed higher resistance in the susceptibility of powdery mildew compared to ‘Gondalbi’. ‘Gommany’ cultivar was registered as a novel variety with number 90 in The Minister of the Korea Forest Service on December 2015.
