  • The thread load distribution as applied to large stud bolts for steam turbines is investigated using the finite element method. The stress concentration in tapered threads is studied with varying prestress and taper angle. Based upon the thread load distribution, the optimal taper angles to reduce the stress concentration are determined for various prestresses. The presented finite element model is validated by comparing results of the calculated thread load with analytic ones. The optimal taper angles obtained from this research can be used in designing tapered threads of large stud bolts for steam turbines.

  • In this paper, the optimal diagrid angle of atypical tall buildings has been found using diagrid optimization technique which is based on parametric algorithm. A diagrid is a diagonal grid which can be seen among atypical tall buildings and structures which effectively resist horizontal and vertical direction loads. Therefore, it is also the objective of this studyto find the maximum stiffness of atypical tall buildings by optimizing diagrid angle. Moreover, this study touches on both cylindrical and tapered off cylindrical structures, as shown in the examples to check the compatibility of optimum diagrid angle, which effectively resists horizontal deformation on top by optimization algorithm.

  • New feeding structures using linearly and exponentially tapered lines to planar microstrip resonators are proposed. These can overcome the design problems from coupling losses and impedance mismatching by increasing the coupling efficiency. The variation of its feeding angle is evaluated for the insertion loss and bandwidth and the feedline length is optimized at ${\lambda}_g$/2. The ring resonators and patches fed by the tapered line have been designed and implemented. The experimental results show that the insertion loss is enhanced by about 7 dB. Both rings and antennas are better matched, without disturbing the single-mode resonance or distorting their radiation pattern

  • Blade design optimization of QTP-UAV prop-rotor was conducted using ModelCenter(R). Performance efficiency of the blade in hover and forward flight were adopted as the multi-objective function. Required power and pitch link force applied to constraint in each flight mode and limited lower than the value of the baseline blade. Design variables of root chord length of the blade, taper ratio, twist slope, twist angle at 0.5R of the blade, anhedral angle, parabolic coefficient of a tip shape and location of airfoil were used to generate the blade planform. CAMRAD-II, the comprehensive analysis program of rotorcraft, was used for performance analysis of prop-rotor blade in design process. Performance of the optimized blade improved 1.6% of figure of merit in hover and 13.6% of propulsive efficiency in forward flight. Pitch link force also reduced approximately 30% less than that of the baseline blade.

  • Many researchers are trying to reduce the use of lubrication fluids in metal cutting to obtain safety, environmental and economical benefits. The aim of this study is to determine the optimization lubrication conditions in minimum quantity lubrication(MQL) turning of workpieces with taper angle. This study has been considered about various conditions of MQL. The objective functions are cutting force and surface roughness. Design factors are nozzle diameter, nozzle angle, MQL supply pressure, distance between tool and nozzle and length of supply line. The cutting force and surface roughness were statistically analyzed by the use of the Box-Behnken method. As a results, optimum lubrication conditions were suggested and verification experiment has been performed. The results of this study are expected to help the selection of lubrication conditions in MQL turning.

  • This paper presents an analysis of impulse dispersion for impulse radio ultra-wide band(IR-UWB) antenna. A set of antenna structure configurations are highlighted with verification based on the STFT(Short Time Fourier Transform) in 3.1~5.1 GHz: first, a taper-slotted antenna allowing the optimal impulse transmission, and second, 4 types of the omni-directional IR-UWB antenna using different feed structures(microstrip line, and CPW(Coplanar Waveguide)). The proposed STFT allows the analysis of the IR-UWB antenna's dispersion characteristic.

  • The static aeroelastic analysis and optimization of flexible wings are conducted for steady state conditions while both aerodynamic and structural parameters can be used as optimization variables. The system of multidisciplinary design optimization as a robust methodology to couple commercial codes for a static aeroelastic optimization purpose to yield a convenient adaptation to engineering applications is developed. Aspect ratio, taper ratio, sweepback angle are chosen as optimization variables and the skin thickness of the wing. The real-coded adaptive range multi-objective genetic algorithm code, which represents the global multi-objective optimization algorithm, was used to control the optimization process. The support vector regression(SVR) is applied for optimization, in order to reduce the time of computation. For this multi-objective design optimization problem, numerical results show that several useful Pareto optimal designs exist for the flexible wing.

  • In this research, design optimization of an aircraft wing has been performed using the fully automated Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) framework, which integrates aerodynamic and structural analysis considering nonlinear structural behavior. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) mesh is generated automatically from parametric modeling using CATIA and Gambit, followed by an automatic flow analysis using FLUENT. A computational structure mechanics (CSM) mesh is generated automatically by the parametric method of the CATIA and visual basic script of NASTRAN-FX. The structure is analyzed by ABAQUS. Interaction between CFD and CSM is performed by a fully automated system. The Response Surface Method (RSM) is applied for optimization, helping to achieve the global optimum. The optimization design result demonstrates successful application of the fully automated MDO framework.
