  • The characteristics of flow field and turbulent mixing efficiency of SS in non-aerated contacting reactor are critical design parameters directly affecting on the efficiency of the overall process of wastewater treatment system. To this end, in this study numerical fluid dynamic calculation has been made to investigate the flow field and concentration distribution of SS in terms of specification(shape and dimension) of impeller and other operating conditions. As the first step, the performance of the computer program developed was successfully evaluated by the comparison of the typical flow field with the type of impeller with that appeared in open literature. Further, a series of parametric investigations are made in terms of interesting parameters such as the type and dimension of impeller, location, and number of impeller, etc. A number of useful conclusions obtained by numerical calculation are the superiority of mixing efficiency of pitched type than the flat one together with the visible increase of the overall mixing effect by the employment of the larger impeller and increase of the impeller number, etc.

  • SIFT(Scale Invariant Feature Transform) is an algorithm to extract vectors at pixels around keypoints, in which the pixel colors are very different from neighbors, such as vortices and edges of an object. The SIFT algorithm is being actively researched for various image processing applications including 3-D image constructions, and its most computation-intensive stage is a keypoint localization. In this paper, we develope a fixed-point model of the keypoint localization and propose its efficient hardware architecture for embedded applications. The bit-length of key variables are determined based on two performance measures: localization accuracy and error rate. Comparing with the original algorithm (implemented in Matlab), the accuracy and error rate of the proposed fixed point model are 93.57% and 2.72% respectively. In addition, we found that most of missing keypoints appeared at the edges of an object which are not very important in the case of keypoints matching. We estimate that the hardware implementation will give processing speed of $10{\sim}15\;frame/sec$, while its fixed point implementation on Pentium Core2Duo (2.13 GHz) and ARM9 (400 MHz) takes 10 seconds and one hour each to process a frame.

  • We develop liquefaction resistance curves, which represent the correlation between cyclic resistance ratio (CRR) and number of cycles (N) to estimate the build-up of residual excess pore pressure from simple shear tests performed for this study and also from published literature. The liquefaction curve is calculated from two models. The comparisons show that one of the models is not reliable because it underestimates CRR. The scatter of the data is shown to be significantly reduced when CRR is normalized to the resistance ratio at N = 15 ($CRR_{N=15}$). Use of the normalization is particularly useful because CRR can be easily estimated from field tests. From normalization, we propose mean, upper, and lower curves. The corresponding design equation and its parameters are also proposed. We believe that the proposed curves can be used for effective stress site response analyses and evaluation of the seismic performance of port structures.

  • RC flat plates may be governed by a serviceability as well as a strength condition, and a construction sequence and its impact on the distributions of gravity loads among slabs tied by shores are decisive factors influencing short and long term behaviors of flat plate. Over-loading and tensile cracking in early-aged slabs significantly increase the deflection of a flat plate system under construction, and a reshoring work may be helpful in reducing slab deflections by controlling the vertical distributions of loads in a multi-shored flat plate system. In this study, a effect of reshoring works on short and long term deflections of flat plate systems are analyzed. The slab construction loads with various reshoring schemes and slab design and construction conditions are defined by a simplified method, and the practical calculation of slab deflections with considering construction sequences and concrete cracking and long term effects is applied. From parametric studies, the reshoring works are verified to reduce slab deflections, and the optimized conditions for the reshoring works and slab design and constructions are discussed.

  • In this letter, we propose a novel printed helix antenna for RFID reader in UHF band. The printed strip line of the antenna is first wound up outside a polygonal shaped layer and then the winding continues on an inner layer to control the overall gain and the radiation pattern. In addition, the winding pitch angles on each layer have either negative or positive values resulting in the broad CP bandwidth. The detail structure of the antenna was optimized using Pareto genetic algorithm(GA), so as to obtain excellent performances for RFID reader antennas. The optimized two-layered polygonal helix was fabricated on the cardboard of a flexible substrate and the performances were measured and compared with the simulations. The fabricated antenna was made up of copper tape which can adhere to a flexible cardboard and had 21.4 % matching bandwidth, 31.9 % CP bandwidth, readable range of $5.5m^2$ with kr=3.2. Also based on the current distribution of the strip line of the antenna and sensitivity of the antenna bents points, we confirmed that the antenna has the quarter-wave transformer near the feed for the broad matching bandwidth and radiates the traveling wave for the broad CP bandwidth using the bent strip line.

  • Most studies on the vibration analysis of a beam-column with ends elastically restrained and various intermediate constraints have been based on the Euler beam theory, which is inadequate for beam-columns of low slenderness ratios. In this paper, analytical methods for vibration and dynamic sensitivity of a Timoshenko beam-column with ends elastically restrained and various intermediate constraints are presented. Firstly, an exact solution method is shown. Since the exact method requires considerable computational effort, a Rayleigh-Ritz analysis is also investigated. In the latter two kinds of trial functions are examined for comparisions : eigenfunctions of the base system(the system without intermediate constraints) and polynomials having properties corresponding to the eigenfunctions of the base system. The results of some numerical Investigations show that the Rayleigh-Ritz analysis using the characteristic polynomials is competitive with the exact solutions in accuracy, and that it is much more efficient in computations than using the eigenfunctions of the base system, especially in the dynamic sensitivity analysis. In addition, the prediction of the changes of natural frequencies due to the changes of design variables based on the first order sensitivity is in good agreements with that by the ordinary reanalysis as long as the changes of design variables are moderate.

  • We numerically simulated a dissolved air flotation (DAF) tank to predict the performance of the pilot facility. The flow was assumed to be two-dimensional and two-phase. The velocity distributions in the separation zones of differently shaped DAFs were compared to find the effect of the shape on the performance. The results showed that the typical flow pattern that appeared in a well-designed DAF-tank was generated in the separation zone of the base model. This flow pattern could be maintained while the baffle height was sufficiently tall regardless of the other geometric parameters. However, the baffle height and angle, the contact zone width, and the perforated plate affected the uniformity of the downward flow in the separation zone. Except for the baffle height, the base model used in this study showed a better uniformity of downward flow than did other models with different geometric parameters.

  • The location selection of the element that should guarantee easy visual perception, like the landmark, is the a topic that appears much in the design process. Recently, a graph analysis technique using computers has been applied in order to evaluate the visibility of the visual element, but the analytic frame is flat and the setting of the visual pont and the matrix are fixed so there were great limitations in obtaining the results of the practical analysis. Thus, this study presented Nondirectional Multi-Dimensional Calculation (MDVC-N), an analytic methodology available for the analysis of the dynamic visual point in the 3D environment. It thus attempted to establish the analytic application using the 3D computer graphics technology and designed a script structure to set the visual point and the matrix. In addition to that, this study tried to verify the analytic methodology by applying the complex land as an example model, where buildings in various heights of terrains with a high-differences are located, verifying the same analytic methodology. It thus tried to identify the visual characteristics of each alternative location. The following results were gained from the study. 1) The visibility can be measured quantitatively trough the application of the 6-alternatives. 2) Using the 3dimensional graph, intuitive analysis was possible. 3) It attempted to improve the analytic applicability by calculating the results corrected as a variable behavior from the local integration variable of the space syntax.

  • In various industrial processes, piping serves as a link between unit processes and is an essential installation for internal flow. Therefore, the optimum design of the piping system is very important in terms of safety and cost, which requires the estimation of the pressure drop, flow rate, pipe size, etc. in the piping system. In this study, we developed a software that determines pressure drop, flow rate, and pipe size when any two of these design variables are known. We categorized the flows into single phase, homogeneous two phase, and separated two phase flows, and applied suitable calculation models accordingly. We also constructed a system library for the calculation of the pipe material, relative roughness, fluid property, and friction coefficients to minimize user input. We further created a costing library according to the piping material for the calculation of the investment cost of the pipe per unit length. We implemented all these functions in an integrated environment using a graphical user interface for user convenience, and C # programming language. Finally, we verified the accuracy of the software using literature data and examples from an industrial process with obtained deviations of 1% and 8.8% for the single phase and two-phase models.
