  • The paper is mainly concerned with the applications tn develop an optimum structural design procedure for hatchcoverless container ship. L.R rules are applied to determine the scantlings of the longitudinal members. As for an object function of midship section design, the total sectional area of all the longitudinal members for midship section is selected. The SUMT procedure combined with direct search method is applied to the solution of nonlinear optimum design problem to find a optimum midship section arrangement. The results of optimization study show that the weight of model ship may be saved about 8.0% per unit length.

  • This paper deals with the strongest static arches with the solid regular polygon cross-section. Both span length and volume of arch are always held constant regardless the shape functions of cross-sectional depth of regular polygon. The normal stresses acting on such arches are calculated when both static vertical and horizontal point loads are subjected. By using the calculating results of stresses, the optimal shapes of strongest static arches are obtained, under which the maximum normal stress become to be minimum. For determining the redundant of such indeterminate arches, the least work theorem is adopted. As the numerical results, the configurations, i.e. section ratios, of the strongest static arches are reported in tables and figures. The results of this study can be utilized in the field of the minimum weight design of the arch structures.

  • The minimum weight design for simply-supported isotropic or symmetrically laminated stiffened cylindrical shells subjected to various loads (axial compression or combined loads) is studied by a nonlinear mathematical search algorithm. The minimum weight design in accomplished with the CONMIN optimizer by Vanderplaats. Several types of buckling modes with maximum allowable stresses and strains are included as constraints in the minimum weight design process, such as general buckling, panel buckling with either stingers or rings smeared out, local skin buckling, local crippling of stiffener segments, and general, panel and local skin buckling including stiffener rolling. The approach allows the consideration of various shapes of stiffening members. Rectangular, I, or T type stringers and rectangular rings are used for stiffened cylindrical shells. Several design examples are analyzed and compared with those in the previous literatures. The unstiffened glass/epoxy, graphite/epoxy(T300/5208), and graphite/epoxy aluminum honeycomb cylindrical shells and stiffened graphite/epoxy cyindrical shells under axial compression are analyzed through the present approach.

  • Numerical analyses have been carried out in order to check the applicability of high-strength steel to a medium-sized steel bridge. Using the yield strength of steel, Average Daily Truck Traffic (ADTT), and fatigue grade of structural detail as analytical parameters, the minimum weight sections that satisfy the limit states of the AASHTO LRFD design specification were determined through an optimization scheme. Likewise, the effects of the number of girders and span length on the applicability of high-strength steel were evaluated. Results show that high-strength steel may be employed in the steel bridge, since steel weight decreases with increasing yield strength regardless of the fatigue effect. Nonetheless, appropriate countermeasures against fatigue should be determined since it is a major factor in the effective use of high-strength steel in steel bridges.

  • In a conventional ship structure, stiffeners with an asymmetric section, such as inverted angles, are used widely despite the disadvantage of strength compared to the stiffeners with a symmetric section, such as a built-up T. On the other hand, T-type built-up members are attracting more attention than L-type inverted angles due to the increased size of ships. The purpose of this study was to develop an optimal design program for a built-up T, and apply an evolution strategy as an optimization technique. In the optimization process, the gross thickness concept was adopted for the design variables and objective function, and the constraints are set up based on HCSR (Harmonized Common Structural Rules). Using the developed program in this study, the optimal stiffener design was carried out for 300K VLCC and 158K COT of which the orders were obtained lately. The optimal results revealed the weight reduction effect of 144 tons and 60 tons, respectively.

  • The study presents the optimum design of B/C midship structure based on the classification society's Rule. The SUMT (Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Technique), using the Direct Search Methods (Hooke and Jeeves, Simplex) is applied to the solution of this nonlinear optimum design problem with constraints. Through the optimum designs of existing ships(60k, 186k, 220k), the amount 0.45-6.18% in weight of their midship structures are obtained on the viewpoint of minimum weight design.

  • The ship structural design problem is formulated as a general nonlinear optimization problem with constraints. Characteristics of the general structural problems and various optimization techniques are discussed, with special emphasis on penalty function method for constrained problems. A simple example of the solution of a midship structure design of cargo vessel, which complies with the rules of the Korean Register of Shipping is shown using SUMT-exterior method with some search methods.

  • This study presents a structural design optimizing sizes of high-rise steel plane truss members by maximizing stiffness subjected to given volume constraints. The sizing optimum design is evaluated by using a well-known optimality criteria (OC) of gradient-based optimization methods. In typical size optimization methods, truss structures are optimized with respect to minimum weight with constraints on the value of some displacement and on the member stresses. The proposed method is an inversed size optimization process in comparisons with the typical size optimization methods since it maximizes stiffness associated with stresses or displacements subjected to volume constraints related to weight. The inversed approach is another alternative to classical size optimization methods in order to optimize members' sizes in truss structures. Numerical applications of a round shape steel pipe truss structure are studied to verify that the proposed maximum stiffness-based size optimization design is suitable for optimally developing truss members's sizes.

  • Structural design of most nonprismatic Pre-Engineered Building Systems (PEBS) is performed using optimizing software developed in foreign countries. In this study, a structural optimizing software for the design of 3-D structures of nonprismatic PEBS is developed according to the allowable stress design method of AISC2005 and KBC. Optimizing structural design with nonprismatic members is carried out by repeating the process of structural analysis and member design to minimize the weight of a structure. According to the optimizing design results of 2-D and 3-D structures with nonprismatic members, there are considerable steel savings in designing structures with nonprismatic H-shaped built-up sections rather than with H-shaped rolled sections. When H-shaped built-up sections were used, the weight of the structural steel was reduced when AISC2005 specification rather than AISC1898 was used in the design. It is therefore concluded that utilizing the new AISC2005 specification is safer in preventingweb buckling because the height of a member is designed to be small despite some differences depending on the structural type.

  • In this study, an optimization method to design the hull structure of the surface effect ships with twin hulls is proposed for the purpose of minimization of weight based on the regulations of DnV class, and computer programs following the method are developed. The method uses simple formulas as to bending and buckling strength of beams and plates to design local structures, and considers the effect of interaction between longitudinal girders and transverse web frames by grillage analysis and calculates torsional strength of the cross structure by the simplified method. Global optimization of the midship section is attained by integration of optimized substructures. According to optimized results by applying the method to the designed ship, reduction of 20 percent of hull weight can be shown, and optimum transverse frame space can be obtained.
