  • The present study analyzed actual cases of designed flow estimation method and designed flow rate of sewage pipe lines. In order to examine the effects of peak-hour demand factor estimation with given daily highest peak loading, we analyzed its effects on designed flow rate with changing the peak-hour demand factor from 2.0 to 10.0. The results of this study are as follows. When reviewing the recent designs, we found that 59.4% of pipe line with 250mm and 300mm diameter, which fall under minimum allowable pipeline did not meet the minimum velocity which is specified as 0.6m/sec in design standards. The pipe line that have minimal access population or have very low slope did not satisfy the minimum velocity. In estimating the designed sewage flow, the applied daily highest peak loading and hourly highest peaking loading were the load factor for the entire population of the planned area, and for the peak loading of the initial pipes connected to a very small population, we applied the same factor as that applied to the entire area and, as a result, the hourly highest flow was underestimated. Because, in case of the initial pipes, the method of applying the same peak loading to all subject areas is highly possible to produce underestimated design flow, when estimating the designed flow of the initial pipes connected to a small population need to adopt a rational flow factor according to the size of population. For this, it is considered to investigate and analyze raw data on daily and hourly variation of sewage flow.

  • This study provided safe sailing speed and appropriate passing time to areas of known strong current water to prevent marine accident of the ships. To the interpretation of these data which target Myeongnyang waterway, AIS data of the ship was collected from $12^{th}$ July to $15^{th}$ July 2010 and site environment was investigated on $4^{th}$ September 2010. On the basis of the collected data, the 'Minimum Navigation Speed' and 'Optimum Navigation Speed' were calculated. It has also considered the 'Spare control force' or allowance and the 'Respond Rudder Angle' for each tidal current speed. Additionally, it suggested the safe passing time to strong current area by analyzing tidal level and tidal current speed. The conclusion of the research are as follows : (1) If the flow rate is greater than 4.4 kn, it is difficult for the model ship to control herself by her own steering power and to cope with tidal current pressure force and yaw moment caused by the tidal current.. (2) The minimum navigation speed should be over 2.3 times the tidal current and the optimum navigation speed should be over 4.0 times the tidal current. (3) When spring tide, the optimum passing time at Myeongnyang waterway is between 30 minutes to 1 hour before the time of high/low water, and at 5 hours after high/low water, passing of ships should be avoided because it is time when the flow rate is over 4 kn.

  • The goal of this study was to develop a suitable ventilation system for high-rise hog building (HRHB) for growing-fattening with combined slatted floor pen in second story and in situ manure management system in Korea. The HRHB was constructed as 29m long, 9m wide and 7.6m high for outer dimension with an indoor height of 3.1m and 2.4 for lower and upper floor, respectively. Ventilation systems for each treatment were installed in separated rooms of HRHB. The ventilation types installed in each room were following 3 types: ventilation type 1 (V1), where air was pulled through a circular duct inlet and exhausted by fans; ventilation type 2 (V2), where air was pulled through eave inlet (side ceiling inlet) and exhausted by fans; and ventilation type 3 (V3), where air was pulled through baffled ceiling inlet and exhausted by fans. For each ventilation system, investigated air velocity under minimum, medium and maximum ventilation ratio and air flow pattern inside. The results were as follows; For air flow pattern from top to bottom, V1 showed a homogeneous vertical type, V2 showed a bilateral symmetry type and V3 showed an vertical umbrella type. Under minimum ventilation ratio, air velocity in upper floor (80cm above the slated floor) was similar for V1, V2, and V3. Under maximum ventilation ratio, air velocity in upper floor was undeviating for V1 (0.10~0.26m/s) and varied for V2 (0.12~0.63m/s) while those for V3 was relatively slow and less varied (0.07~0.15m/s). In conclusion, Duct inlet type (V1) can be applied to the development of a new HRHB with additional evaluations such as field test hog feeding.

  • The local migration or movement behavior of fishes in streams are related to feeding, spawning, growing, dispersing, and refuging. The pale chub (Zacco platypus) is a dominant species that migrates locally and inhabits in river and stream in Korea. However, dams, weirs, culverts and other regulatory structures are physical barriers that limit fish movement and fragment habits and populations. If main stream and off-channel habitats are connected with culverts, they would restrict the small fish as pale chub movement due to the high flow velocities and low depths. But in Korea, there is no experimental study to evaluate the swimming performance of species in Korea. Therefore, it is difficult to proposed that design guidelines for pass fishes through culverts. The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate the swimming performance of pale chubs. A series of swimming performance test has been used in both of the fixed velocity and the incremental velocity methods in an experimental flume. As a result, the critical swimming speed for pale chub(body length 8.9 cm) was found to be about 0.7 m/s. Therefore, the flow velocity for culvert design in the low flow condition should not be exceed the its swimming ability, especially 0.7 m/s for pale chubs(body length 8.9 cm). And the minimum depth for culvert design in the low flow condition should not be lower than the fish body height add a dorsal fin height.

  • Filtration efficiency tests were conducted on a fiberglass mat filter with DOP aerosol having a diameter from 0.l${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 0.45${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in the face velocity range of 1cm/sec to 10cm/sec. Filtration of submicron particles by a fibrous filter is characterized by a face velocity. The size of DOP aerosol which has a minimum removal efficiency decreases with increasing the velocity. A numerical solution of the diffusion equation is obtained for a fiberglass mat filter by using "Kuwabara's cell model" for the flow field and Von Mises Transformation for the actual flow around a fiberglass. The present theoretical results agree quite well with the experimentals for fiberglass mat. This result could be contributed to predict the removal efficiency on an air filter and to optimize the operating condition of an air purification system with a filter. a filter.

  • CRUD (chalk river unidentified deposits) is a porous material deposited on the surface of nuclear fuel during nuclear power plant operation. The CRUD is composed of metal oxides, such as iron, nickel, and chromium. It is essential to investigate the effects of the CRUD layer on the wall heat transfer between the nuclear fuel surface and the coolant in the event of a nuclear accident. CRUD only negatively affects the temperature of the nuclear fuel due to heat resistance because the effects of the CRUD layer on two-phase boiling heat transfer are not considered. In this study, the physical property models for the porous CRUD layer were developed and implemented into the SPACE code. The effects of boiling heat transfer models on the peak cladding temperature and quenching were investigated by simulating a reflood experiment. The calculation results showed some positive effects of the CRUD layer.

  • Objective: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder which is characterized by a recurrence of entire or partial collapse of the pharyngeal airway during sleep. A given tidal volume must traverse the soft tissue tube structure of the upper airway, so the tendency for airway obstruction is influenced by the geometries of the duct and characteristics of the airflow in respect to fluid dynamics. Methods: Individualized 3D FEA models were reconstructed from pretreatment computerized tomogram images of three patients with obstructive sleep apnea. 3D computational fluid dynamics analysis was used to observe the effect of airway geometry on the flow velocity, negative pressure and pressure drop in the upper airway at an inspiration flow rate of 170, 200, and 230 ml/s per nostril. Results: In all 3 models, large airflow velocity and negative pressure were observed around the section of minimum area (SMA), the region which narrows around the velopharynx and oropharynx. The bigger the Out-A (outlet area)/ SMA-A (SMA area) ratio, the greater was the change in airflow velocity and negative pressure. Conclusions: Pressure drop meaning the difference between highest pressure at nostril and lowest pressure at SMA, is a good indicator for upper airway resistance which increased more as the airflow volume was increased.

  • Acoustic streaming induced by the microscopic longitudinal ultrasonic vibration at 28.5 ㎑ is visualized between the quiescent glass plate and ultrasonic vibrator by particle imaging velocimetry(PIV) using laser. To investigate the augmentation of air flow velocity of acoustic streaming. the velocity variations of air streaming between the stationary plate and ultrasonic vibrator are measured in real-time. It is experimentally investigated that the magnitude of the acoustic streaming dependent upon the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and stationary p1ate results in the variations of the average velocity fields as a outcome of the bulk air flow caused by the ultrasonic vibration. In addition. maximum acoustic streaming velocity exists at resonant gap. 18mm that is one of the resonant gaps (H=18, 24, 30, 36㎜) at which resonance occurs. The variation of the local maximum turbulent intensity with axial direction appear to reveal the value of 8%∼70% dependent upon the gap between the quiescent glass plate and ultrasonic vibrator. Shearstress is also maximized at the center region of the vibrator and the vorticity is also maximum and minimum in the neighborhood of the center of the vibrator at which the local maximum turbulent intensity and shear stress exist.
