  • The delamination in the filament-wound composite flywheel rotor often lowers the performance of the flywheel energy storage system. A conventional ring type hub usually causes tensile stresses on the inner surface of the composite rotor, resulting in lowering the maximum rotational speed of the rotor. In this work, the stress and strain distributions within a hybrid composite rotor were derived from the two-dimensional governing equation with the specified boundary conditions, and an optimum pressure at the inner surface of the rotor was proposed to minimize the strength ratio and maximize the storage energy. A split type hub was introduced to apply the calculated optimum pressure at the inner surface, and a spin test was performed up to 40,000 rpm to demonstrate the performance of the split type hub with radial and circumferential strains measured using a wireless telemetry system. From the analysis and the test, it was found that the split type hub successfully generates a compressive pressure on the inner surface of the rotor, which can enhance the performance of the composite rotor by lowering the strength ratio within the rotor.

  • To find main factors to affect tobacco culture and quality, NC 2326 (Nicotiana tabacum L.) was cultivated in Korea and in the United States under different plant density, fertilization, mulching and curing. Among the chemical characteristics of the both experimental soils, the organic matters were similar concentration in both locations but effective phosphorous contents were higher in Oxford in the United States. Plant height, length and width of the largest leaf, leaf thickness, and midrib ratios were larger in Oxford than in Suwon in Korea. Also they were larger in non mulching system than in mulching system. But the total numbers of the leaves were decreased in non mulching system. The content of nicotine was higher in the plant grown in Suwon than in Oxford. The concentrations of nicotine and sugar tend to increase in mulching system comparing of non mulching system. During the growing, the concentration of non-volatile organic acids was higher in Suwon, while it was lower in cured leaf produced in Suwon. Also the contents of total fatty acids were lower in the harvested leaf grown in Suwon, but not in cured tobacco. Forty three compounds identified among the volatile oils from these experimental samples were quantified. The concentrations of the major components related to the tobacco flavour such as damascone, damascenone, solanone, nor-solanadione, and megastigmatrienones were higher in the cured tobacco produced in Oxford rather than in Suwon.

  • This study represents basic research into the utilization of mixed ash (fly ash and bottom ash) from the ash pond of the Taean Thermal Power Plant as a construction material. We conducted physical and mechanical experiments on the mixed ash and examined its engineering characteristics in terms of its use as a material for road landfill and structure backfill. We evaluated the physical and chemical characteristics of the ash by performing tests to determine specific gravity, maximum and minimum density, liquid limit and plastic limit, grain size distribution, composition (by X-ray diffraction), and loss on ignition. We also evaluated the mechanical characteristics by testing for permeability, compaction, CBR, and tri-axial compression. The experiments on the mixed ash yielded a specific gravity of 2.18-2.20, dry density of $9.38-13.32\;kN/m^3$, modified CBR of 16.5%-21%, permeability coefficient of 1.32 to $1.89-10^{-4}cm/sec$, and drained friction angle of $36.43^{\circ}-41.39^{\circ}$. The physical and mechanical properties of the mixed ash do not meet the quality standards stipulated for road landfill and structure backfill materials. Mixed ash with a high content of fly ash failed to meet some of the quality standards. Therefore, in order to utilize the mixed ash as a material for road landfill and structure backfill, it is necessary to improve its properties by mixing with bottom ash.

  • Micro-algae, one of the biological resources for alternative energy, has been heavily studied. Among various methods to analyze the status of the micro-algae including counting, screening, and flocculation, the flocculation approach has been widely accepted in many critical applications such as red tide removal study or microalgae resource study. To characterize the flocculation status of the micro-alga. A traditional optical modality, i.e., photospectrometry, measuring the optical density of the flocs has been frequently employed. While this traditional optical method needs shorter time than the counting method in flocculation status analysis, it has relatively lower detection accuracy. To address this issue, a novel real-time micro-algae flocculation analysis method based on the lens-free shadow imaging technique (LSIT) is introduced. Both single cell detection and floc detection are simultaneously available with a proposed lens-free shadow image, confirmed by comparing the results with optical microscope images. And three shadow parameters, e.g., number of flocs, effective area of flocs, and maximum size of floc, enabling quantification of the flocculation phenomenon of micro-alga, are firstly demonstrated in this article. The efficacy of each shadow parameter is verified with the real-time flocculation monitoring experiments using custom developed cohesive agents.

  • The productions of beauvericin and enniatins H, I, and MK1688 by Fusarium oxysporum KFCC 11363P were investigated on rice substrate at four temperatures (15, 20, 25, and $30^{\circ}C$) and three moisture contents (10, 20, and 40%). The largest amount of beauvericin ($718.0\;{\mu}g/g$) was produced at $25^{\circ}C$, and maximum levels of enniatin H ($781.9\;{\mu}g/g$), I ($725.8\;{\mu}g/g$), and MK1688 ($425.8\;{\mu}g/g$) were measured by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) at the same temperature. The optimal moisture content for the production of beauvericin and enniatins H, I, and MK1688 was 40%, and the trace amounts of these toxins were observed at 10% moisture content. Sixty five grain samples (n=65) were tested for the monitoring of beauvericin. This mycotoxin was detected in six grain samples including three maize, two barley, and one wheat samples. The highest contamination level of beauvericin was observed in maize sample ($0.23\;{\mu}g/g$).

  • This paper presents a procedure to recover sea surface heights (SSH) and free-air (FA) gravity anomalies from dense satellite altimeter SSH data with enhanced accuracies over the full spectrum of the gravity field. A wavenumber correlation filtering (WCF) of co-linear SSH tracks is developed for the coherent signals of sub-surface geological masses. Orbital cross-over adjustments with bias parameters are applied to the filtered SSH data, which are then separated into two groups of ascending and descending tracks and gridded with tensioned splines. A directional sensitive filter (DSF) is developed to reduce residual errors in the orbital adjustments that appear as track patterned SSH. Finally, FA gravity anomalies can be obtained by the application of a gradient filter on a high resolution estimate of geoid undulations after subtracting dynamic sea surface topography (DSST) from the SSH. These procedures are applied to the Geosat Geodetic Mission (GM) data of the southern oceans in a test area of ca. $900km\;\times{1,200}\;km$ to resolve geoid undulations and FA gravity anomalies to wavelengths of-10 km and larger. Comparisons with gravity data from ship surveys, predictions by least squares collocation (LSC), and 2 versions of NOAA's predictions using vertical deflections illustrate the performance of this procedure for recovering all elements of the gravity spectrum. Statistics on differences between precise ship data and predicted FA gravity anomalies show a mean of 0.1 mgal, an RMS of 3.5 mgal, maximum differences of 10. 2 mgal and -18.6 mgal, and a correlation coefficient of 0.993 over four straight ship tracks of ca. 1,600 km where gravity changes over 150 mgals.

  • Copper recovery from waste water of electronic industry has been conducted effectively in a fluidized bed reactor. Initial concentration of copper in the waste water, liquid flow rate in the reactor, reaction temperature and time and current density between the cathode and anode in the reactor have been selected as operating variables. The effects of operating variables on the recovery of copper have been studied. It has found that the copper resolved in the waste water can be recovered continuously by means of a fluidized bed reactor The recovery of copper decreased with an increase in the initial concentration of copper in the waste water, while it increased with increasing reaction time and current density, however, it exhibited its maximum value with the variations of liquid flow rate and reaction temperature. The optimum reaction condition to maintain the copper recovery around 85% is as follows ; $X_o=3wt%$, $U_L=0.5cm/s$, $T=25^{\circ}C$, $I=7A/dm^2$ and t=2hrs within this experimental condition.

  • This study was done to reduce total energy demand based on resource shortage problems and to provide improvement points for more efficient adjustment of the high insulation standards for saving energy in Korea. The demand sensitivity was fully considered by varying the slope of each building. The energy performance of the building was maximized by the introduction of outdoor air at night. A final low-energy building model was developed with the two measures combined, and the short-term operation of the night-fuzzy ventilation system was simulated. The result showed a reduction of about 6 to 7 percent compared to the base model. The results could have many implications in terms of the need to conduct demand sensitivity analyses in architectural design.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the expandibility of sludge treatment by earthworm through real scale experiment and the optimum counter-plan for organic sludge treatment. For the purposes, sludge removal efficienciesof night-soil using earthworm and it's behavior according to the transplanting methods of the earthworm on non-cover worm bed or in the green house worm bed were compared. Sludge uptake rates on non-cover worm bed for 6 months were $0.27{\sim}0.33ton/m^2$ and the excrement of earthworm yields $0.15ton/m^2$(44.1~46.7% of raw night soil sludge dosage). These results were not much different from the worm bed in the green house. The average and maximum earthworm density were about $6.5kg/m^2$ and $7kg/m^2$ respectively on the non-cover worm bed. The density of the worm bed was comparatively higher in spring and fall terms but lower in summer. The amount of old earthworm was much plenty than young earthworm on the non-cover worm bed, resulting in reverse distribution type of pyramid. From the experiments on non-cover worm bed(7,000 pyeong)and in the green house worm bed(1,200 pyeong), it was concluded that landfill and transporting cost could be reduced when the earthworm was applied for the night-soil sludge treatment. Profits from the excrement sale of earthworm was 9,600,000 won. Through this study, it was founded that earthworm treatment method for organic sludge are much more environmentally sound than landfill treatment.

  • Since the decommissioning of nuclear plants and facilities, large quantities of slightly contaminated concrete waste have been generated. In Korea, the decontamination and decommissioning of the KRR-1, 2 at the KAERI have been under way. And concrete waste was generated about 800 drums of 200 L. The conditioning of concrete waste is needed for final disposal. The concrete waste is conditioned as follows: mortar using coarse and fine aggregates is filled void space after concrete rubble pre-placement into 200 L drum. Thus, this research has developed an optimizing mixing ratio of concrete waste, water, and cement and has evaluated characteristics of a cement waste form to meet the requirements specified in disposal site specific waste acceptance criteria. The results obtained from compressive strength test, leaching test, thermal cycling test of cement waste forms conclude that the concrete waste, water, and cement have been suggested to have 75:15:10wt% as the optimized mixing ratio. Also, the compressive strength of cement waste form was satisfied that including fine powder up to maximum 40wt% in concrete debris wastes about 75%. As a result of scale-up test, the mixture of concrete waste, water, and cement is 75:10:15wt% meet the satisfied compressive strength because the free water increased with and increased in particle size.
