A Rate Dependent Plasticity Model under Cyclic Loading of Metals (주기하중을 받고 있는 금속의 시간의존적 소성 모델 비교)

  • In real world applications, the response of structures may be dependent on the rate of loading and thus can be affected by transient loading, especially when the rate of loading is significant. In such situations, the rate of loading may become a major issue to understand structures during earthquake excitation or under blast or high velocity impact. In some cases, the rate effect on structures under strong earthquake excitation cannot be ignored when attempting to understand inelastic behavior of structures. Many researchers developed the constitutive theories in cyclic plasticity and viscoplasticity. In this study, numerical simulation by cyclic visocoplasticity models is introduced and analyzed. Finally, the analytical results are compared with experimental results as a means to evaluate and verify the model.

  • This project investigated the use of two types of thermoplastic pipes, High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Poly-vinyl Chloride (PVC), as cross-drains under highways. Pipes ranging from 0.3 m (12 in.) to 1.5 m (60 in.) in diameter were evaluated under deep fills, minimum cover, and construction loads. In addition to a comprehensive literature review, an analytical study into the allowable fill heights for thermoplastic pipes and a field study to observe the installation and performance of the pipe in service conditions were conducted. Based on the study findings, recommendations regarding how and when thermoplastic pipe should be installed are provided.

Behavior of Underground Flexible Pipes Subject to Vehicle Load (차량하중을 받는 지중연성관의 거동특성)

  • Underground flexible pipes for electric cables are subject to external loads and surrounding soil pressure. Particularly, strain of flexible pipes is of great concern in terms of safety and maintenance for electric cables. In this paper, stress and strain of flexible pipes with various depth are compared using traditional formula, FEM analysis and model soil box test. The results show that theoretical values are more conservative in strain in comparison with model soil box test and FEM analysis. Considering the strain criteria - maximum 3.5%, flexible pipes can be buried at the depth of 40cm without additional soil improvement. From the result of this study, deformation formula compatible with the field condition was proposed.

Failure Probability Assessment of Natural Gas Pipeline under Combined Stresses (복합하중에 의한 천연가스 배관의 파손확률 평가)

  • The structural reliability assessment can be used to improve the reliability in the asset integrity management of the pipeline by using a geometric variation, mechanical characteristics, load change and operating condition as evaluation factors. When evaluating structural reliability, the failure probability of the natural gas pipe is evaluated by the relationship of the resistance of the pipe material to external loads. The failure probability of the natural gas pipe due to the combined stresses such as the internal pressure, thermal stress and bending stress was evaluated by using COMREL program. When evaluating the failure probability of the natural gas pipe, a buried depth of 1.5 to 30 m, a wheel load of 2.5 to 20 ton, a temperature difference of 45℃, an operating pressure of 6.86MPa, and a soil density of 1.8 kN/㎥ were used. The failure probabilities of the natural gas pipe were evaluated by the Von-Mises stress criterion as the maximum allowable stress criterion under the combined stresses.
