Geochemistry of Shallow gases taken from the core sediments in the southeastern Ulleung Basin (울릉분지 남동부 시추 퇴적물 내에 함유되어 있는 천부가스의 특성)

  • Chemical and isotopic compositions of hydrocarbon gases were analyBed to characterize the properties of the shallow gases distributed in the southeastern part of the Ulleung Basin, offshore Korea. Sediments from the core were also analyzed to determine the characteristics and relationship to shallow gases. Hydrocarbon gases in the sediments consisted of methane (697.9-6054.4 ppm), ethane, propane, butane and hexane. The total carbon content of the sediments ranges from 1.84fe to $5.11{\%}$ and the total organic carbon content ranges from $0.29{\%} \;to\; 2.65{\%}$. High C/N ratio (>10) indicates that input of terrestrial organic matter was prevalent at the time of deposition. The methane content and stable isotopic data indicate that hydrocarbon gases from the sediments are identified to be thermogenic gas and mixture of both biogenic and thermal gases. Based on the Rock-Eval and carbon isotopic data, the level of thermal maturity of organic matter in the sediments $(Tmax<425^{\circ}C)$ is lower than that of gas. It suggests that thermal gases in the sediments migrated from the deeper sediments than the penetrated depth.

  • 최근 대기오염물질에 대한 관심 증가는 대표적인 2차 오염물질로 분류되는 오존에 대한 관심과 미세먼지에 대한 특히 많은 관심을 초래하고 있다. 특히 미세먼지 중 탄소성 물질(carbonaceous material)의 경우, 기존 연구를 결과를 통해 살펴보면 지역적인 차이는 있으나 PM$_{2.5}$ 총 농도의 약 10~70%, 26~60%, 20~80%의 분율을 나타내는 것으로 알려져 있다. 또한 탄소성 물질은 시정 장애 현상등과 관련하여 중요한 대상물질임으로 국내외적으로 많은 관심을 유발하고 있는 물질이다. 국내의 경우, 시정 장애 현상과 관련하여 한진석 등(1994)이 원소분석기(elemental analyzer, Perkin elmer model 240)를 이용하여 분석을 실시한 바 있으며. 시정거리 5 km 미만시 탄소의 시정 기여율이 35.5%를 보고한 바 있다. Analysis of Carbon Emission from a Forward Osmosis and Reverse Osmosis Hybrid System for Water Reuse and Seawater Desalination (하수재이용 및 해수담수화를 위한 정삼투-역삼투 융합공정의 탄소배출량 분석)

  • A conventional seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) and a forward osmosis (FO) and reverse osmosis (RO) hybrid process to produce 1,000 m3/d of fresh water, were designed and compared in terms of carbon emission. When FO was adapted for the osmotic dilution, the required pressure for RO decreases, and thus energy consumption decreases. The decrease in carbon emission by decreased energy consumption (up to -0.73 kgCO2/m3 using coal as the energy source) was compared with the increase in carbon emission by the FO system (+0.16 kgCO2/m3), which is a function of various factors such as the number of FO modules and energy consumption. The comparison revealed that the FO-RO process causes less carbon emission compared with the SWRO process when the energy sources are coal and oil. However, if energy sources with low carbon emission such as solar, wind, and nuclear energy are selected, the carbon emission of the FO-RO process becomes higher than that of the SWRO process. This implies that the type of energy source is a key factor to determine the necessity of the FO-RO process from the aspect of carbon emission.

Development of a cholesterol biosensor modified with carbon nanotube (탄소나노튜브를 이용하여 개조한 콜레스테롤 바이오 센서 개발)

  • A cholesterol biosensor was developed using a modified carbon electrode with carbon nanotubes. The disposable cholesterol biosensor was modified with carbon nanotubes to enhance electron transfer during the enzymatic reaction of cholesterol. Cholesterol oxidase and peroxidase, with potassium ferrocyanide as a mediator, were immobilized on a screen-printed carbon nanotube electrode. The electrochemical cholesterol biosensor developed using carbon nanotubes showed a rapid and reliable signal for measuring total cholesterol. The cholesterol sensor showed a linear response in 5 seconds with a small volume (0.5 μL) in the range of 100~400 mg/dL, with a coefficient of variation of 4.0%.

  • 유럽연합(EU)은 2012년부터 항공산업에 대해 탄소배출권 거래제도를 적용할 예정이다. 따라서 유럽공항에서 출발 및 도착하는 모든 국제선과 국내선 항공편에 대해 탄소세가 부과될 것이며 이는 한국도 예외는 아니다. 또한 유럽을 운항하는 경우 장거리에 해당되어 중단거리를 운항하는 항공기들에 비해 총 탄소배출량이 더 많으므로 비용부담이 커질 것으로 예상된다. 본 연구는 EU-ETS로 인한 탄소세가 항공요금에 반영된다면 항공여객들이 어느 정도 민감하게 반응할 것이며 이러한 점들이 궁극적으로 한국의 항공시장에 어떤 영향을 미칠 것인지를 파악해 보는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 인천국제공항에서 프랑크푸르트 국제공항 노선을 이용하는 승객을 대상으로 직항노선과 중동지역 경유노선을 비교하여 EU-ETS 가격이 반영된 항공요금에 대한 반응을 Revealed Preference (RP)와 Stated Preference (SP) 설문자료와 Logit Model을 사용하여 분석하였다. 본 연구결과는 한국의 항공산업은 물론 2012년부터 부과될 EU-ETS에 대한 항공사들의 전략개발에 도움이 될 것이다.

Estimation of POC Export Fluxes Using 234Th/238U Disequilibria in the Amundsen Sea, Antarctica; Preliminary Result (남극 아문젠해에서 234Th/238U 비평형법을 사용한 유광대에서 심층으로의 입자상 유기탄소 침강플럭스 추정; 예비결과)

  • In order to understand the carbon cycle in the Amundsen Sea of the Southern Ocean, the export fluxes of particulate organic carbon from the euphotic zone to deep water estimated using ${\psi}$/${\psi}$ disequilibrium method. Seawaters in 14 water columns were collected during February and March 2012, and analyzed for total and dissolved ${\psi}$, and particulate organic carbon. Total ${\psi}$ activities in the water column showed deficiency and excess relative to those of ${\psi}$ depending on the water depth. Deficiency of total ${\psi}$ in the euphotic zone showed mirror images both with chlorophyll-a and fluorescence, and was consistent with the loss of nitrate, which indicated the effect of biological activity. In addition, deficiency of total ${\psi}$ from deep water was associated with the increase of total dissolvable Fe/Mn concentration. Excess total ${\psi}$ activity presented below the euphotic zone might be related to particulate ${\psi}$ concentrated in this water depth. Mean export flux of ${\psi}$ estimated using the steady state model was $867{\pm}246dpmm^{-2}day^{-1}$. Mean export flux of particulate organic carbon, which were estimated by the product of total ${\psi}$ flux and ratio of POC/${\psi}$ ($7.08{\pm}4.27{\mu}molCdpm^{-1}$) in the sinking particles, was $5.9{\pm}3.9mmolCm^{-2}day^{-1}$. These fluxes were similar levels to those in the Weddell Sea during February and March 2008. Export ratios (ThE) relative to the primary production in the euphotic zone were in the range of 3-54% (av. 28%).

  • 인류문명의 발달사를 보통 석기, 청동기, 철기시대로 구분하는데 그렇다면 앞으로 다가올 21세기 이후는 어떤 시대가 될 것인가. 주기율표를 따져보면 불을 일으킨 부싯돌이나 돌도끼의 주성분이 실리콘(규석)이기 때문에 석기시대를 실리콘시대로 볼 수 있으며 청동기를 거쳐 철기시대인 현대엔 다시 실리콘시대로 돌아와 탄소에서 일단 대단원의 막을 내리게 될 것으로 본다. 탄소는 21세기에도 과학기술의 핵심 원소로 중요한 역할을 담당할 것이다.

  • 21세기의 여명과 더불어 컴퓨터의 핵심인 반도체생산기술에는 지각을 뒤흔들 큰 변화가 예고되고 있다. 반도체칩의 선두메이커인 인텔사와 컴퓨터의 '거인' IBM사는 최근 21세기 컴퓨터혁명에 불을 지필 새로운 최첨단기술개발에 성공하는가 하면 현재보다 1만5천배나 많은 1조비트의 정보를 저장할 수 있는 양자구조의 트랜지스터모델도 개발되었다. 또21세기 초에는 탄소원자로 된 나노튜브(수십개의 원자크기 지름의 탄소분자 튜브)가 반도체 소자의 기능을 대신할 수 있는 길이 열릴 것 같다.

Estimation of Carbon Storage for Pinus rigida Stands in Muju (무주지역 리기다소나무 임분에 대한 탄소저장량 평가)

  • This study aimed to determine the total amount of carbon stored in the aboveground, belowground tree biomass, dead trees, and organic matter in the forest floor and soil of the 36-year-old Pinus rigida stands in Muju. A total of three plots were selected to measure the carbon stored in live trees, dead trees, forest floor, and soil. Results showed that the carbon stocks of P. rigida stands amounted to 51.0 ton C/ha in aboveground biomass and 29.6 ton C/ha in belowground biomass. The distribution ratios of carbon stocks were as follows: 41.0% in stem wood, 36.8% in roots, 12.8% in branches, 6.0% in stem bark and 3.4% in foliage. The carbon stocks in dead tree amounted to 0.65 ton C/ha while it was 6.40 ton C/ha in organic matter in forest floor. The total amount of carbon stocks found in soil was 51.62 ton C/ha: 20.27 ton C/ha at 0~10 cm depth, 12.83 ton C/ha at 10~20 cm depth, 12.27 ton C/ha at 20~30 cm depth, and 6.24 ton C/ha at 30~50 cm depth. It was also observed that, as the soil depth increased, the soil carbon stocks tended to decrease. Results showed that the total amount of carbon stocks of P. rigida stands in Muju was 139.27 ton C/ha; the highest portion of the cumulative carbon stocks was found to be in soil at 37.1%, followed by the aboveground biomass with 36.6%, belowground biomass with 21.3%, forest floor with 4.6 % and dead trees with 0.5 %. This study is expected to provide forest managers accurate estimates of carbon stored in the habitat of P. rigida stands in Muju.

Aboveground and Soil Carbon Storages in Quercus mongolica and Quercus variabilis Natural Forest Ecosystems in Chungju (충주지역(忠州地域)의 신갈나무와 굴참나무 천연림(天然林) 생태계(生態系)의 지상부(地上部) 및 토양(土壤) 중(中) 탄소고정(炭素固定)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • This study has been carried out to estimate aboveground and soil carbon contents in an average 39-year-old Quercus mongolica and 40-year-old Quercus variabilis stands in Chungju, Chungbuk. Ten sample trees were cut in each forest and soil samples were collected. Aboveground carbon content was estimated by the equation model $Wt=aD^b$ where Wt is oven-dry weight in kg and D is DBH in cm. Total aboveground carbon content was 48.85tonC/ha in Quercus mongolica stand and 57.49tonC/ha in Quercus variabilis stand. The proportion of each tree component to total aboveground carbon content was high in order of bolewood, branches, bolebark, and leaves in the two forests. Aboveground net primary production was estimated at 5.88tonC/ha in Quercus mongolica stand and 5.12tonC/ha in Quercus variabilis stand. Soil carbon content was 67.0tonC/ha in Quercus mongolica stand, 67.8tonC/ha in Quercus variabilis stand, and 54.7tonC/ha in Pinus densiflora stand. There was no significant difference in soil carbon content among the three forests.
