  • The effects of the viscosity of an adjacent viscous fluid on the characteristics of the elastic waves have been studied theoretically and experimentally. Expressions for the wave speed and attenuation of the elastic waves of transverse motion, such as the torsional wave propagating in a circular cylinder and the Love wave in a layered half-space solid, have been obtained as functions of the viscosity and mass density of the fluid by exact and asymptotic analyses. The theoretical results have been compared with experimental observations, and it has been demonstrated that a device described herein can be used as a sensor for measuring the viscosity of a fluid with a known mass density.

  • By using propagation characteristics of ultrasonic surface wave, the depth of the surface hardened layer of SCM440 steel with different high frequency induction heat treatments was measured and the same was done on the carburized SCM415 steel. The propagation velocity of surface wave was constant and independent of frequency in t.he specimens with identical microstructure, it was, however, decreased by 59m/s in the hardened layers compared to the unhardened part. From t.he relationship between the effective case depth and the wave length of surface wave, the depth of the hardened layer could be measured and evaluated nondestructively for both induction hardened and carburized steels.

  • In this paper, the temperature dependence of tissue is estimated by measuring the attenuation coefficient and the propagation velocity of ultrasonic reflection signal. And, on the basis of expeiments, the possibility of non- invasive temperature estimation is considered. Specimens in the experiment are acryl 1)late. muscle, fat and liver of pig. The temperature of specimen is controlled by water bath which is able to adjust temperature a quarter of a degree. Through the series of experiments, we conformed that the ultrasonic parameters have lin earity to a certain extents with the change of tissue's temperature. And we expect that noninvasive temperature estimation of tissue can be realized after several preconditions be satisfied with the standard experiment conditions and a great number of base data.

  • We carried out studies on development and characteristic of ultrasound brast training biopsy phantom. the major finding were of follow ; (1) C type TMM was shown good homogeneity, brightness and attenuation as like human soft tissue. (2) $TiO_2$ 4.10%w/v TMM was shown good homogeneous echo texture and propagated speed as like the human Tissue. (3) $TiO_2$ type TMM was appeared lower brightness and higher penetration rate than C type TMM. Therefor, Breast TM phantom and target material TMM will be useful $TiO_2$ 4.10 %w/v TMM and C 2.09 %w/v TMM.

  • In order to establish a technical concept for the detection of defects in weldments in thin steel plate, an experimental and theoretical investigation was carried out for artificial defects in a steel plate having a thickness of 2.4mm by using the guided wave technique. In particular the goal was to find the most effective testing parameters paying attention to the relationship between the excitation frequency by a tone burst system and various incident angles. It was found that the test conditions that worked best was for a frequency of 840kHz and an incident angle of 30 or 85 degrees, most of the defects were detected with these conditions. Also, it was clear that a guided wave mode generated under an incident angle of 30 degrees was a symmetric mode, So, and that of 85 degrees corresponded to an antisymmetric mode, Ao. By using the two modes, most of all of the defects could be detected. Furthermore, it was shown that the antisymmetric mode was more sensitive to defects near the surface than the symmetric mode. Theoretical predictions confirmed this sensitivity improvement with Ao for surface defects because of wave structure variation and energy concentration near the surface.

  • The type of ultrasound transducer used influences the quality of a reconstructed ultrasound image. This study analyzed the effect of transducer type on ultrasound computed tomography (UCT) image quality. The UCT was modeled in an ultrasound simulator by using a 5 cm anatomy model and a ring-shape 5 MHz 128 transducer array, which considered attenuation, refraction, and reflection. Speed-of-sound images were reconstructed by the Radon transform as the UCT image modality. Acoustic impedance images were also reconstructed by the delay-and-sum (DAS) method, which considered the speed of sound information. To determine the optimal combination of transducers in observation, point-source, flat, and focused transducers were tested in combination as trasmitters and receivers; UCT images were constructed from each combination. The combination of point-source/flat transducer as transmitting and receiving devices presented the best reconstructed image quality. In UCT implementation, the combination of a flat transducer for transmitting and a point transducer for receiving permitted acceptable image quality.

  • It is well recognized recently that ultrasonic technique is one of the most widely used methods of nondestructive evaluation to characterize material properties of nonconventional engineering materials. Therefore it is very important to understand physical phenomenon on propagation behavior of elastic wave in these materials, which is directly associated with ultrasonic signals in the test. In this study, the theoretical analysis on multi-scattering of harmonic elastic wave due to the particulate with interface between matrix and fiber in metal matrix composites(MMCs) was done on the basis of Lax's quasi-crystalline approximation and extinction theorem. SiC particulate (SiCp) reinforced A16061-T6 composite material was chosen for this analysis. From this analysis, frequency dependences of phase velocity and amplitude attenuation of effective plane wave due to the change of volume fraction of SiC particulate were clearly found. It was also shown that the interface condition between matrix and fiber in MMCs gives a direct effect on the variation of phase velocity of plane wave in MMCs.

  • Mechanical properties of cancellous bone with a high porosity and cortical bone with a high fraction of solid are estimated by the measurement of ultrasonic wave propagation. The speed of sound (SOS) in ultrasonic waves is usually measured by two equations, bulk wave equation and bar wave equation. Bulk wave speed has almost same as the fast wave of Biot's theory. In this study, we examine whether the bulk wave speed is influenced by the anisotropy of bone matrix. The SOS when the bone matrix is isotropy is 0.69% faster than that when the bone matrix is transversely isotropy. We also examine if the use of bar equation is adequate for a cortical bone. In the previous paper, the bar wave speed is a function of Young's modulus or elastic coefficient tensor. In the same manner, the effect of bar wave speed to isotropic and anisotropic bone is estimated.

  • Fiber reinforced plastic material should be inspected in fabrication process in order to enhance quality by prevent defects such as delamination and void. Generally, ultrasonic technique is widely used to evaluate FRP. In conventional ultrasonic techniques, transducer should be contacted on FRP. However, conventional contacting method could not be applied in fabrication process and novel non-contact evaluating technique was required. Laser-based ultrasonic technique was tried to evaluate FRP plate. Laser-based ultrasonic waves propagated on CFRP were received with various transducers such as accelerometer and AE sensor in order to evaluated the properties of waves due to the variation of frequency. Velocities of laser-based ultrasonic waves were evaluated for various fiber orientation.
