  • Breast ultrasound readings are very important to diagnose early breast cancer. In Ultrasonic inspection, it shows a significant difference in image quality depending on the ultrasonic equipment, and there is a large difference in diagnosis depending on the experience and skill of the inspector. Therefore, objective criteria are needed for accurate diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we analyzed texture characteristics by applying GLCM (Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix) algorithm and extracted characteristic parameters and diagnosed breast cancer using neural network classifier. Breast ultrasound images were classified into normal, benign and malignant tumors and six texture parameters were extracted. Fourteen cases of normal, malignant and benign tumor diagnosed by mammography were studied by using the extracted six parameters and learning by multi - layer perceptron neural network back propagation learning method. As a result of classification using 51 normal images, 62 benign tumor images, and 74 malignant tumor images of the learned model, the classification rate was 95.2%.

  • In this paper, a wavelet packet transform method is proposed for improving the altitude control performance of quadrotor UAV using an ultrasonic rangefinder. A ground tests are conducted using an ultrasonic rangefinder that is much used for vertical takeoff and landing. An ultrasonic rangefinder suffers from signal's spike due to specular reflectance and acoustic noise. The occurred spikes in short time span need to be analyzed at both sides time and frequency domain. The analyzed spikes of the ultrasonic rangefinder using a wavelet packet transform. Compared with the discrete wavelet transform, the wavelet packet decomposition can obtain more abundant time-frequency localization information, so it is more suitable for analyzing and processing ultrasonic signals spike. Experimental results show that it can effectively remove the spikes of the ultrasonic rangefinder.

  • Ultrasonic guided waves have been widely utilized for long range inspection of structures. Especially, development of array guided waves techniques and its application for long range gas pipe lines(length of from hundreds meters to few km) were getting increased. In this study, focusing algorithm for array guided waves was developed in order to improve long range inspectability and accuracy of the array guided waves techniques for long range inspection of gas pipes, and performance of the developed techniques was verified by experiments using the developed array guided wave system. As a result, S/N ratio of array guided wave signals obtained with the focusing algorithm was increased higher than that of signals without focusing algorithm.

  • The time domain methods of estimating the attenuation coefficient are generally based on the analysis of statisical properties of the reflected echoes form an attenuating medium. Hence, it is often required to have a large number of data samples in order to obtain a statistically stable estimation result. In the attenuation estimation problem, this means that many different speckle patterns are required in the spatial resolution volume of an attenLlation image. In this paper, by using the fact that the speckle pattern Is sensitive to the point spread function of the ultrasound beam, we suggest a method to generate the statiscally uncorrelated or slightly correlated data samples in a given region by rotating a linear transducer and carrying out lateral scans for all rotating angles. This technique is applied to the entropy method for attenuation estimation proposed recently by the authors where the performance is verified by experiments using a tissue equivalent phantom.

  • Medical ultrasound system has been widely used to visualize the lesion for diagnostics in most medical service site including hospitals and clinics thanks to its advantages such as real time operation, ease of use, safety. Among many signal processing blocks of the system, one of the most important part that governs the image quality is the beamformer, and technologies for this part has been continuously developed in long time. The synthetic aperture imaging method, that is one of the major technologies of beamforming, was introduced to maximize utilizing the information delivered from the patient's body through the probe, and contributed to breakthrough of the image quality since it was introduced in around 1990's, and evolved continuously in decades. This paper reviews and surveys the process of development of this technology and expects future evolution.

  • The respiration measurement method using the ultrasound sensor hardly gets an influence of an error of inertia and pressure and it is a respiratory detection device available semi-permanently. This device measures the amount and flow of respiration through using a delivery speed difference of the ultrasound waves that are a return format by the pneumatic stream that is a flogging of ultrasound waves during transmission and receipt as having used a characteristic of ultrasound waves. In this paper, it improved sensitivity of a signal to happen during transmission and receipt of a sensor because measurement must be performed with a patient to the center and measurement was played in a weak breathing so that it was possible.

  • Guided ultrasonic waves propagating over long distances within a short period provide a fast long-range inspection method. However, structures with arbitrary cross-sections, such as rails, have complicated dispersion characteristics that make analysis of the ultrasonic signal difficult. Therefore, an understanding of the characteristics of the propagating waves in rails is important for the creation of a reliable and practical inspection system using guided waves. In particular, it is necessary to investigate the dispersion characteristics of the guided waves. This paper introduces a method for the calculation of the dispersion curves of KS60 rails by adopting a SAFE method, and discusses the possibility of using guided waves as a technique for rail inspection.

  • Harmonic imaging is introduced in the present article and its principle and physical characteristics is described in contrast to conventional ultrasonic imaging. The principle of the conventional image which uses ultrasonic echoes reflected at the interfaces between tissues is presented, and the nonlinear ultrasonic propagation which results in harmonic components is conceptually described. The pulse inversion technique which effectively extracts the harmonic components from the ultrasonic echo signals is introduced, and the advantages of the constructed harmonic images are summarized comparing with those of conventional ultrasonic images. The harmonic images are classified according to the mechanism of harmonic production, and the typical harmonic images obtained from patients are presented in contrast to the corresponding sonograms. Clinical significance and prospects of harmonic imaging and the future research areas are discussed.

  • In this paper a ultrasonic level meter for accurately and simply measuring oil levels of vehicle transmission is developed and its effectiveness is shown by experiments. By using a FPGA, all digital signal processes for the oil level calculation is fulfilled, and the programming on a FPGA project IDE enables very short developing time. And besides, analog circuits including a transmit/receive switch, multi-stage active filters and an envelope detect circuit are designed to process low-level ultrasonic echo signal. Under experiments, the designed level meter has proven to have the accuracy of about within 1[mm] scale.
