  • The study examined the current status and the use of electronic publishing files to produce a bibliographic database. In particular . it examined the problems faced in the production of KoreaMed, an abstract database of Korean medical journals. The methodology of KoreaMed to utilize the computer files which was produced in the process of publication of a print journal is found to be very effective. It assures the accuracy of data, accelerates the input speeds, and reduces the input costs. However, such a project can not be accomplished to a satisfactory level without the cooperation of the publishers involved. It turns out that many small publishers and academic societies hardly have saved the electronic publishing files of previous issues. Besides, it is hard to maintain the right channel to receive the files continuously. The input and processing of special characters are very delicate problems. In addition, the diversity of layout and formats of journals, of the electronic publishing software used, and of the storage media, makes the utilization of the electronic publishing files a very complex process. In order to operate the KoreaMed system more efficiently by requiring the publishers to submit XML files which meets the standard of the KoreaMed, it is necessary to educate and train personnels of journal publishers for the management of electronic publishing files.

  • A rhetorical segment in traditional abstract displaying a sign of particular function is frequently referred to as a move. One of the most common moves is the Background, Aim, Method, Results, and Conclusion (BAMRC). The objective of this paper is to investigate the move patterns of research article abstracts in the field of social sciences based on BAMRC moves. Using the Scopus bibliographic database, a total of 467 abstracts from 298 research journals in the field of social sciences were analyzed. The result showed a wide range of move patterns. The implication of the result of this study suggests the existing traditional abstracts in social sciences might not be sufficiently "informative" due to missing moves and due to various move orders. To this end, automatically mapping moves in traditional abstracts to sub-headings in structured abstracts can be a more challenging task, requiring additional procedures to resolve these types of compatibility issues. Future studies can compare this study's result to other fields or disciplines within social sciences in order to find a more precise nature of abstracts in the field of social sciences.

  • It is practiced by many Korean medical institutions to give weights to medical papers published n foreign journals covered by major international abstracts and indexes (A&I) in the evaluation of research performance. In an attempt to recommend the databases to be used for the evaluation of KOrean medical research papers, this study measured the extent of overlap records of Korean medical papaers retrieved from the three major medical databases, EMBASE, MEDLINE and SCISEARCH. Korean papers published in foreign journals between 1990 to 1995 were analyzed. It also analyzed the characteristics of journals where these Korean medical papers are published with respect to their subjects, publishing countries and languages. It is found that these is no difference among three databsases as far as the characteristics of journals where Korean medical papers are published are concerned with respect to their subjects, publishing countries and languages. Thus the number of papers retrieved from each database should be the major criterion to recommend the A&I databases to be used in the evalua ion of research performance. If one database must be chosen for the evaluation of Korean medical papers, it is probably the best to utilize SCISEARCH which is the most efficient database for verifying Korean medical papers in foreign journals. If two databases can be used, then EMBASE should be the next choice.

  • The inhouse database can be used as an effective tool for managing inhouse/corporaterelated informations, which efficiently support business activities as they are shared by all the inhouse members. The inhouse database construction processes can be classified into a concept design, various kinds of DB format designs, abstracting/indexing, and DB operation/maintenance. This article presents a method of systematizing the concept design elements such as information flow support system, usable resources, and so on.

  • This study aimed to investigate the current uses of subheadings that appear in medical science journal abstracts and to discuss its potential implications for medical science from the perspectives of library and information science. To conduct this study, the following nine sub-fields in medical science were selected: cancer, ethics, genetics, infectious disease, neurology, pediatrics, immunology, psychiatry, and cardiology. Random sample data were drawn based on the years 2010 to 2015 from the PubMed database. This study investigated the extent of the uses of subheadings, variants of subheadings, and common formation of subheadings with the help of a frequency analysis. The specific findings of this study are summarized as the following: 1) more traditional abstracts are used across almost all sub-fields of medical science; 2) on average, 4.1 subheadings were used in the sample dataset; and 3) the most frequently used set of subheadings is OBJECTIVES, METHODS, RESULTS, and CONCLUSIONS. This subheading set appears to be the de facto standard across all medical science journals. The analysis of subheadings in structured abstracts and the issues raised in this study can be beneficial for journal editors and other academics in medical science as well as library and information science.
