Anti-obesity effect of the combination of fermented extracts from Momordica charanatia and Withania somnifera in mice fed a high-fat diet (고지방식이를 제공한 마우스에서 여주와 아쉬아간다 발효추출물 조합의 항비만 효과)

  • We investigated the serum cholesterol and visceral fat lowering effects of Momordica charanatia (MC) and Withania somnifera (WS) extracts in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice. Combination of fermented MC and WS extracts (FMCWS) as well as that of non-fermented extracts (MCWS) were orally administered to HFD-induced obese mice along with the HFD supplementation for 8 weeks. During the experiment, body weight, food intake, and levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL-cholesterol were analyzed. Body weight and the levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides were significantly increased in the HFD-fed mice compared with the normal control (NC) group. However, supplementation of the extracts showed a tendency to reduce body weight gain and suppressed the levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride with the increment of HDL-cholesterol levels. Abdominal fat weight was significantly increased in the HFD group, and the size of adipocytes within the epididymal adipose tissue was markedly expanded compared with the NC group. However, in the FMCWS and MCWS groups, the abdominal fat weight was significantly reduced and the sizes of the adipocytes were noticeably diminished compared with those of the HFD-fed mice. Moreover, the deposition of giant vesicular fat cells observed in the liver tissue of the HFD group was prominently reduced in these groups. These results indicate that the combination of extracts from MC and WS tends to have potent synergic effects in reducing body weight gain as well as significantly lowering the visceral fat and the serum lipid levels, and thus improving anti-obesity efficacy in HFD-induced obese mice.

Studies on Pharmacological effects of Glasswort (Salicornia herbacea L.) (퉁퉁마디의 약리효과에 관한 연구)

  • This study was designed to investigate the pharmacological effects of glasswort. SD rats drunk experimental water (added to glass wort extracts) for 4 weeks. Weight gain resulted in reduced by administration of glasswort extracts compared with control group(p < 0.05). Total protein and albumin contents in serum of SD rats for 4 weeks did not show significantly difference by administration of glasswort extracts compared with control group. GOT was $126.7{\sim}134.1\;U/L$ and GPT was $41.1{\sim}46.7\;U/L$ by administration of glasswort extracts in SD rats for 4 weeks. Total and LDL cholesterol contents in serum of SD rats significantly decreased by administration of glasswort extracts compared with control group(p < 0.05) HDl cholesterol contents in serum of SD rats was significantly increased by administration of glasswort extracts compared with control group(p < 0.05). Total lipid and triglyceride contents in serum of SD rats was significantly decreased by administration of glasswort extracts compared with control group (p < 0.05). The overall results suggest that the administration of glasswort extracts can not only prevent a disease of arteriosclerosis, hyperlipidemia, fatty liver but also inhibit of weight gain.

A Comparison Study on Middle School Students of Gwangju and Jeonnam in Terms of Dietary Behavior, Body Perception and Weight Control Concerns According to BMI (광주.전남 일부 지역 중학생들의 BMI 수준에 따른 식행동, 체형인식 및 체중조절 양상에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to investigate the food habits, eating behaviors, perception of body shape, statuses of body weight control by BMI (Body Mass Index) of 732 middle school students in Gwangju and Jeonnam. The results of this study were compared among under weight (UW), normal weight (NW), and overweight (OW) groups according to BMI levels. In the OW group, female students had low scores in eating at night only, while male students had low scores in eating at night, eating speed, and food selection. All subjects wanted more height than measured. Only male students in the UW group wanted weight loss, whereas female students in the OW and NW groups did. Higher BMI in female students resulted in more weight difference between measured and wanted. All subjects responded properly themselves in perception of body shape but the OW groups showed a big difference between their present weight and wanted weights. Higher BMI in all students corresponded to more interest in concern and experience of weight management. In the male students, the reason for weight management showed high tendency in being healthy, whereas the female students had high tendency in having a slender figure. Higher BMI in all students corresponded to bigger difference between wanted and perceived body shape. In contrast, lower BMI in all students meant more stress. Greater difference between wanted and measured weight and greater difference between wanted and perceived body shape corresponded to less satisfaction in body shape. In conclusion, compared to the NW and UW groups, the OW group had overeating habits highly linked to stress. Also the OW group didn't have desirable eating behaviors and attitudes because of their greater interest in concern and experience of weight control and stress accumulation, and finally there was difference in food habits and behaviors according to the BMI level. Therefore these results suggest that effective nutritional programs should be developed including correct body image and good dietary habits.

Influence on in-dorm university students' body-shape perception, obesity, and weight control toward Obesity stress (기숙사 남녀 대학생의 주관적 체형인식, 비만도, 체중조절 행태가 비만스트레스에 미치는 영향)

  • Targeting in-dorm university students, this study is to check body-shape perception, obesity, weight control, and obesity stress, and to figure out the effect level of each variables toward obesity stress. Data were collected by self-evaluation questionnaire from 305 respondents in dorms of a university, and the survey was conducted from May 27 to June 7 of the year 2013. As a result of the survey, both male and female students did not properly perceive their own body-shape. Female students felt that they were fat more than male students did; on the other hand, male students felt that they were skinny even though they were in standard. Females felt more obesity stress than males, and for both male and female students, more obesity resulted in deeper obesity stress. For female students, when the actual body shape is not similar to the body shape that they believe to be, they feel more obesity stress; however for male students, the result was reversed. The group that tried weight control felt more obesity stress than the other group, for both males and females. In addition, for both male and female, the group that has more will toward weight control felt more obesity stress. The effect factors that were checked through multi-variable analysis is like the following: for male students, as they feel fat and as they pay more attention to weight control, the obesity stress increased, and for female students, as they pay more attention to weight control, the obesity stress increased. Focusing on higher obesity stress groups that are distinguished through applying factors to influence on decreasing obesity stress based on the analysis result, and especially for male university students, running exercise programs at the same time for skinny bodies to gain fat would be more effective to decrease obesity stress.

Effect of Nutrition Education for Weight Control on the Dietary Behavior, Anthropometry, Body Composition, and the Serum Levels of Adipocytokines in the Elementary Obese Children (체중조절 영양교육 프로그램이 비만 아동의 식습관, 체중, 지방세포분비 호르몬의 농도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the weight control programme through nutrition education on anthropometry, body composition, dietary behavior, and adipocyte-drived protein in obese elementary school children. The subjects were 17 obese children of OI over 120% from the fourth to sixth grades of elementary school. The subjects were given nutrition education for weight control along with physical and behavioral advices once a week, and the program was 12 weeks long. On the completion of 12 week weight control program, significant decreases in waist and hip circumferences were resulted, however, no changes in body mass index (BMI) and obesity index (OI) were found. Hemoglobin was significantly decreased and HDL-cholesterol was significantly increased. Energy intake was decreased significantly along with intakes of Ca, Fe, folic acid, vitamin B1, vitamin B6, and vitamin C. Meal distribution of energy was changed; % energy from snack significantly from 11.9% to 3.3%. Resistin, leptin, and adiponectin level were not changed; Resistin had a negative correlation with vitamin C intake. Leptin had positive correlations with weight and BMI. Adiponectin was negatively correlated with weight and BMI. In conclusion, nutrition education program for weight control for 12 weeks is effective in changing the dietary behavior, serum profile, and anthropometry in obese elementary children, however, no effect was seen in adipocytokine levels.

A case study on the random coefficient model for diet experimental data (변량계수모형의 식이요법 실험자료에 관한 사례연구)

  • A random coefficient model is applied when times of the repeated measurements are not fixed in experiments with respect to the subjects. The procedures of the inference of a random coefficient model are same as those of a mixed model. Diet experimental data was used for applying the random coefficient model. Various random coefficient models are investigated for the experimental data, and are compared each other. Finally, optimal random coefficient model would be selected. It resulted from the analysis that for the fixed effect factor, the baseline, treatment, height, and time effect were very significant. The treatment effect of the diet foods and exercises were more effective in losing weight than the effect of the diet foods only. The fixed cubic time effect was very significant. The variance components corresponding to the subject effect, linear time effect, quadratic time effect, and cubic time effect of the random coefficients are all positive. When quartic time effect was added as random coefficients the model did not converge. Thus random coefficients up to the cubic terms was considered as the optimal model.

Meta-regression analysis for anti-diabetic effect of green tea (녹차의 항-당뇨 효과에 대한 메타회귀분석)

  • The present study was carried out to summarize the effect of green tea in the diabetic rats by meta-analysis related studies. The association measure to test effect of green tea was Hedges' standardized mean difference. In this particular fixed effect model, body weight was significantly increased. Also, blood glucose, triglycerides were significantly decreased. In this case of heterogeneous variable, random effect model was applied. In this model, body weight was significantly increased. Also, blood glucose was significantly decreased in green tea treated group. According to the Meta-regression analysis, duration of injection was not significant for variables.

Fluconazole prophylaxis in high-risk, very low birth weight infants (고위험 극소저체중 출생아에서 fluconazole 예방요법)

  • Purpose : Fluconazole prophylaxis for very low birth weight (VLBW) infants has been shown to reduce invasive fungal infection and its mortality. This study aims to evaluate the effect of fluconazole prophylaxis in VLBW infants on the incidence and mortality of fungal infection. Methods : VLBW infants with endotracheal intubation and central vascular access admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Chonnam University Hospital were enrolled. Twenty eight infants of 7-month baseline period from January to July 2005 ('non-fluconazole group') were compared with 29 infants of a 7-month fluconazole period from January to July 2006 ('fluconazole group'). Results : Gestational age, birth weight, sex, mode of delivery, frequency of twin pregnancy, chorioamnionitis, antenatal steroid and rupture of membranes were similar between the fluconazole and non-fluconazole groups. The rate of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants, frequency and duration of prophylactic antibiotics, total parenteral nutrition and umbilical catheters, duration of intralipid, mechanical ventilation and nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) were also not significant. However, frequency of percutaneous central venous catheterization (PCVC) and intralipid administration, and duration of PCVC were significant between the two groups. The overall incidence and mortality of fungal infection were not different between the two groups. Although the Malassezia infection was increased in the fluconazole group (P<0.05), candida was significantly decreased compared to the non-fluconazole group (P<0.05). Conclusion : Fluconazole prophylaxis in high risk VLBW infants decreased the candida infection significantly. Antifungal prophylaxis is recommended in terms of cost effectiveness, but further study is needed to clarify the reason for the increase of Malassezia infection.

Effects of age on changes of body composition through caloric restriction in overweight and obese women (과체중 및 비만여성에서 연령이 열량 제한에 의한 체조성 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • Caloric restriction is recognized as one of the best treatment options for obesity, and is associated with changes in body composition. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of age in caloric restriction in overweight and obese women. In this caloric restriction study, nutrient intake of 61 women was evaluated using food records written by subjects for three days. Body composition and metabolic risk factors were assessed before and after caloric restriction. Blood levels of lipids, glucose, leptin, and adiponectin were measured. Visceral fat and subcutaneous fat were evaluated using bioimpedance analysis. General linear models (GLM) identified the independent effects of age after co-varying baseline weight and difference of energy intake. Weight, fat mass, visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, and blood pressure showed a significant decrease by caloric restriction of 452 kcal/day. The percent changes in weight, visceral fat, and subcutaneous fat were -4.5%, -12.0%, and -8.2%, respectively, after caloric restriction. The percent changes of weight, visceral fat, and subcutaneous fat showed an independent association with age co-varying baseline weight and difference of energy intake. Decreased change in percent of leptin by caloric restriction also showed an association with age. Changes in body composition and leptin by caloric restriction showed an independent association with age. This may indicate greater difficulty in achievement of change of body composition as well as greater obesity-related metabolic risk with aging. Therefore, caloric restriction considering age should be recommended for effective dietary treatment in overweight or obese women.
