Lifestyle and dietary changes related to weight gain in college students during the COVID-19 pandemic (COVID-19 유행 동안 대학생의 체중증가와 관련된 생활습관 및 식생활 변화)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to assess the weight fluctuations in college students during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and identify lifestyle and dietary changes related to weight gain. Methods: An online survey was conducted on 270 college students from September 22 to October 26, 2021. A logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze the relationship of weight gain with the general characteristics, lifestyle, and dietary changes of the students. Results: Among the respondents, 42.9% of men and 44.7% of women reported weight gain. The main reasons given for weight gain were reduced activities due to restrictions during lockdown and diet changes, mainly relating to delivered or fast foods. Among the general characteristics and lifestyle factors poor perceived health (odds ratio [OR], 3.97, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.98-7.96) and being underweight (OR, 0.19, 95% CI, 0.05-0.83) were significantly associated with weight gain. With respect to the diet, increased frequency of eating breakfasts (OR, 4.44, 95% CI, 1.76-11.21), decreased frequency of eating snacks (OR, 0.35, 95% CI, 0.16-0.77), decreased frequency of fruit intake (OR, 3.0, 95% CI, 1.32-6.80), increased frequency of carbonated and sweetened beverage intake (OR, 2.74, 95% CI, 1.26-5.99) and increased frequency of fast food consumption (OR, 2.32, 95% CI, 1.14-4.70) were significantly associated with weight gain. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic affected weight gain and caused lifestyle and dietary changes. Specific health and nutrition management plans should be prepared for handling future epidemics of infectious diseases based on the results of surveys conducted on larger sample size.

Valproate-associated weight gain and potential predictors in children with epilepsy (Valproate 치료를 받는 간질환아에서 체중증가와 영향을 주는 인자)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and potential predictors of weight gain in older children and teens treated with valproate (VPA) for epilepsy. Methods : Sixty-five subjects aged 8 to 17 years of age, who began VPA treatment between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2004, and who had documented weight and height measurements at medication initiation and at least one follow-up visit were retrospectively identified. Exclusion criteria were follow-up <6 months, discontinuation of VPA within 6 months, and concurrent therapy with medication known to affect weight (such as topiramate, carbamazepin). Body mass index (BMI) was calculated at initiation and either discontinuation of VPA or last follow-up and stratified into four categories: group 1, underweight <5%; group 2, appropriate 5-85%; group 3, potentially overweight 85-95%; group 4, overweight >95%. Results : Twenty-eight subjects (77.8%) remained within their same category and eight (22.2%) moved up at least one category. Weight gain (increase in BMI difference) was observed in 72.2% of the 36 subjects treated with VPA. Three factors, neurocognitive status (P=0.017), seizure type (P=0.001) and duration of VPA treatment (P=0.035) were identified to be significant predictors of BMI difference. Conclusion : VPA induces weight gain in children and teens with epilepsy. These factors which are normal neurocognitive status, primary generalized type and duration of VPA treatment over the 12 months were predictors for an increase of weight gain. Therefore potential weight gain should be discussed with patients before the initiation of therapy and BMI should be monitored closely.

The Effects of Training on Body Fat and Blood Lipid (운동효과가 체지방 및 혈중 지질에 미치는 영향)

  • The seven (7) housewives were used as subjects at three times per weeks for twelve (12) weeks in order to find out the effects of aerobic exercise and weight training on body composition and blood lipid. Each subject's weight, lean body mass, percent body fat, BMI and blood lipid were measured immediately after the training and the results compared with the same prior to exercises were obtained as follows ; 1. The weight and percent body fat of the subjects were slightly but not significantly decreased, however the lean body mass following training was significantly increased with 1.3 %. BMI S RBW were also not significantly decreased. 2. Calory intake was 1929.9 cal before the training and 1896.0 cal after the training, which doesn't shows much difference. 3. The blood lipid such as TC and LDL-C were a little increased after the training, but HDL-C shows significant increase of 22.7 %, and HDL-C/TC was significantly increased with 13.2 % (p<.05 ) as well. However, TG shows significant decrease (p<.05 ).

Changes in weight, waist circumference, prevalence of obesity, and dietary factors associated with weight gain over 8 years in Korean adults: Longitudinal data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (한국 성인의 8년간 체중, 허리둘레, 비만 유병률의 변화 및 체중증가와 관련된 식이 요인 : 한국인유전체역학조사사업의 종단연구 자료)

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to describe changes in weight, waist circumference (WC), and prevalence of obesity over 8 years as well as investigate demographic and dietary factors associated with weight gain in Korean adults. Methods: The Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study is an ongoing community-based longitudinal study, which was started in 2001~2002 and repeated every 2 years. Height, weight, and WC were measured, and demographic data and food intake information using the food frequency questionnaire were collected from 10,038 adults aged 40~69 years at baseline. Among those individuals, 3,506 healthy individuals without chronic diseases completed the 4th follow-up survey in 2009~2010. Results: Mean weight decreased by 0.35 kg and 0.65 kg in men and women, respectively, whereas mean WC increased by 1.71 cm and 1.85 cm during the 8-year period. Prevalence of obesity based on body mass index (BMI) decreased from 34.5% to 33.5% in men and from 38.0% to 36.7% in women, whereas abdominal obesity increased from 14.8% to 22.2% in men and from 28.8% to 35.4% in women. Weight change was associated with age and smoking status in men, and residence area, age, education, income, and alcohol drinking in women. Approximately 57.5% maintained their BMI over 8 years (<${\pm}1kg/m^2$, stable weight group), 19.5% showed a BMI increase of ${\geq}1kg/m^2$ (weight gain group), and 23.0% showed a BMI decrease of more than $1kg/m^2$ (weight loss group). There was no significant difference in energy intake calculated as the percentage of estimated energy requirements among the three weight change groups. Intakes of coffee mix and milk were significantly higher in the weight gain group than in the weight loss group in men after controlling for confounding factors. Conclusion: Our results show that higher consumption of coffee mix and milk was associated with weight gain in Korean healthy men.

Weight Control Behaviors among Korean Adults : Association with Dietary Intake (한국성인의 체중조절 관련 행위와 식이 섭취 양상)

  • This study aimed to assess the prevalence of weight control behaviors and their association with food and nutrient intake among Korean adults. Study subjects were 7,340 Koreans aged 20 years and older in the 1998 Korean Health and Nutrient Survey. Cross-sectional data were collected on weight control behavior and diet using structured questionnaire by interview. Analysis of variance following after Duncan's multiple range test was used to test the differences in food and nutrient intake among three different weight control behavior groups(weight reducing attempt, weight gaining attempt, none). Current weight control behaviors were reported by 32% of the study subjects. There were significant differences in weight control behaviors between male and female subjects; weight reducing practices were 7 times greater than weight gaining practices among female subjects while it was only 1.5 times among male subjects. Weight control behaviors were not consistently associated with food and nutrient intake among male and female subjects. Moreover, greater food and nutrient intake were observed among those who trying to reducing weight than those who did not try. Therefore, it Is necessary to educate the Korean adults that balanced food and nutrient intake with sustaind weight control effort is the ideal way to achieve healthy weight.

도시 지역 중년여성의 비만도에 따른 체형인식 및 체중조절태도 비교 연구

  • 최근 소득수준의 향상 및 식생활 습관의 서구화로 비만 유병율이 증가하면서 체중조절에 대한 관심이 급증하였다. 그러나 신체적 매력 중에서 날씬함을 너무 강조하는 사회적 분위기 등의 영향으로 자신의 체형을 왜곡되게 인식함으로써 이에 따른 신체에 대한 불만족은 무분별한 체중조절을 시도하도록 자극하는 요인이 되고 있으며 이러한 무리한 체중조절은 신체적·심리적 장애를 초래하는 것으로 알려지고 있다. 그러나 체형인식 및 체중조절에 대한 연구는 주로 젊은 여성들을 대상으로 한 것이 대부분으로 중년여성을 대상으로 한 연구는 거의 없는 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 자기체형에 대한 관심이 점차 높아지고 있는 중년여성들을 대상으로 비만도에 따른 체형인식 경향을 파악하고 체중조절에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 알아보고자 하였다. 조사대상은 도시지역에 거주하는 40세 이상 중년여성 249명으로 일반사항, 체형인식 및 체중조절태도, 이상식행동 등에 대하여 설문조사를 실시하였다. 모든 자료는 SAS program을 이용하여 분석하였다. 조사대상자의 평균 연령은 48.5세였으며 평균 비만도(BMI)는 22.7로서 정상범위에 속하였다. 비만도에 따른 체중군별 분포는 정상체중군이 72.9%로 가장 많았으며, 저체중군이 6.7%, 과체중군이 20.4%이었다. 자기 체형에 대한 인식도를 체중군별로 비교해본 결과, 정상체중군의 40.1%만이 자신의 체형을 ‘표준체형’으로 올바르게 인식하고 있을 뿐, 8.1%는 ‘마른 체형’으로, 51.7%는 ‘살찐 체형’으로 잘못 인식하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 저체중군의 37.5%는 자신의 체형이 ‘표준체형’이라고 인식하고 있었다. 이상적으로 생각하는 체형에 대하여 조사대상자의 80.9%가 ‘표준체형’이라고 응답하였으며, 8.7%는 ‘마른 체형’을, 10.4%는 ‘살찐 체형’을 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 자기 체형에 대해 조사대상자의 55.8%가 ‘불만족하다’ 고 응답한 반면 ‘만족하다’ 고 응답한 경우는 11.1%에 불과하였다. 그러나 체중조절에 대한 관심도는 체중군별로 비교해 보았을 때, 과체중군이 저체중이나 정상체중군에 비해 유의하게 높았다. 지난 1년 동안의 체중 감량 경험 여부를 조사해본 결과, 과체중군의 77.1%, 정상체중군의 65.3%, 저체중군의 62.5%가 체중감량 경험이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 체중감량 이유를 묻는 문항에 과체중군과 정상체중군의 경우 ‘건강을 위해서’라고 응답한 경우가 가장 많은 반면 저체중군의 경우 ‘체중이 증가되었기 때문에’라고 응답한 경우가 가장 많아 체중군별로 유의적인 차이를 나타냈다. 조사대상자의 53.8%가 체중감량을 하는 중 부작용을 경험한 적이 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 유의적인 차이는 없었으나 저체중군이 과체중이나 정상체중군에 비해 체중감량에 따른 부작용 경험자의 비율이 높았다. 이상식행동을 측정한 결과, 과체중이나 저체중군이 정상체중군에 비해 이상식행동 점수가 유의적으로 높았다. 세부요인별로 비교해 보았을 때, 체중조절에 대한 집착과 식이조절점수는 과체중군이 가장 높았으나, 섭식통제 관련 식행동 점수는 저체중군이 가장 높았다. 이상의 결과를 종합해 볼 때, 중년여성들의 경우 대부분이 자신의 실제 체형에 대하여 그릇된 인식을 갖고 있었으며, 체중을 감량하기 위해 지속적으로 노력하는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 저체중군의 경우 건강보다는 외모 때문에 무리한 체중감량을 시도하고 있었으며 이상식습관과 관련된 식행동 점수가 높은 경향을 보여 영양 및 건강 상태에 문제가 발생될 수 있을 것으로 생각된다. 따라서 중년여성들에게 자신의 체형과 이상체형에 대한 올바른 인식을 갖고 표준 체중을 유지할 수 있도록 지속적인 영양교육이 이루어져야 할 것으로 생각된다.

Effects of Amisulpride Administration on Body Weight and Metabolic Abnormalities in Mice (Amisulpride의 지속 투여가 생쥐의 성별에 따른 체중 및 대사에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to examine the effects on food intake, body weight, and metabolic parameters by amisulpride administration in male and female mice, comparing the effects of risperidone and vehicle administration. Methods : Female and male C57BL/6 mice were grouped into low dose amisulpride(1.5mg/kg), high dose amisulpride(15mg/kg), risperidone(0.1mg/kg) and vehicle. Drugs were administered once daily through intraperitoneal injection over 21days. Body weight was measured weekly and food intake was measured daily. Levels of triglyceride, glucose, insulin and prolactin were determined at the end of experiment(on day 22). Results : In the female mice, low and high dose amisulpride as well as risperidone caused significant weight gains. But weight gains in amisulpride groups were numerically smaller than that of risperidone group. In male mice, only high dose amisulpride caused significant weight gain. Among weight gain groups, only weight gain of male mice with high dose amisulpride was significantly associated with increased food intake. Weight gain group in female mice did not show significant correlation with food intake. In male mice, both amisulpride groups showed significantly high plasma insulin levels compared to vehicle. In female and male mice, low and high dose amiulpride groups showed significant high plasma prolactin levels compared to vehicle. Triglyceride level were not significantly changed in all groups. Glucose level was changed significantly only in male risperidone group. Conclusions : Administration of amisulpride caused more significant weight gains in female and male mice than controls but changes of metabolic parameters were different according to sex of mice. Our results suggest that different mechanisms of amisulpiride are likely to affect weight gain between male and female mice.

Prediction Equation for Post-Cessation Weight Gain in Men (남성에서 금연 후 체중 증가 예측을 위한 공식)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a formula for predicting weight gain after six months of smoking cessation in men. The subjects are 412 men who succeeded in quitting smoking for 6 months at public health center smoking cessation clinic. They have been undergone nicotine patch therapy and weekly counseling for 8 weeks. The final success of smoking cessation has been confirmed by urinalysis. I have measured body composition and vascular compliance before and after the program. Weight(0.98) and BMI(0.85) have shown high positive correlation. The prediction is as follows. Post Weight(kg) = 1.04636 * Pre-Weight - 0.19535 * Pre-BMI + 4.43528. The explanatory power of this estimation equation is 82.46%(<.0001). Based on these results, it is necessary to develop education and programs for effective counseling of the smoking cessation clinic. In addition, research on women is needed.
