  • In this study, the causes and countermeasures for the leakage of a sea dyke under construction are analyzed. In general, the seabed ground is clearly divided from the embankment but a lot of parts show abnormal zones with low resistivity from the results of electric resistivity survey. Hence the causes of the leakage are considered as following: three-dimensional shear strain behavior, irregular compulsory replacement of the soft seabed ground with low strength and quality deterioration of the waterproof sheets during the closing process. The improvement method is determined by considering the constructability in the seawater and its velocity condition, durability, economic feasibility, similar application cases and so on. Consequently, a combination of low slump mortar and slurry grouting and injection method is selected as an optimum combination. Mixing ratio and improvement pattern are determined after drilling investigation and pilot test. The improvement boundary is separated into general and intense leakage area. The construction is performed with each pattern and the improvement effects are confirmed. The confirmed effects with various tests after completion show tolerable ranges for all of the established standards. Finally, various issues such as prediction of length of the waterproof sheet, installation of it against seawater velocity, etc. should be considered when sea dykes are designed or executed around the western sea which has high tide difference.

  • HF radar-derived current data obtained in 2002 and 2004 are analyzed to examine the effects of the completion of the Saemangeum 4th tidal dyke in June 2003, connecting Gogunsan-Gundo and Bieung-Do, on the coastal surface $M_2$ current pattern. Comparison between the currents by HF radar and current meter mooring showed good agreements. Counterclockwise rotation of the $M_2$ current in the observed area did not change with the dyke construction. Strong westward ebb jet from the gap of the dyke was observed in 2002 but disappeared in 2004. The complete closing of the dyke gap caused the current speed increase around the mouth of the Kem River estuary, decrease around Gogunsan-Gundo and the dyke, the changes in the direction of maximum current to north-ward from eastward and the delay of the maximum flood current occurrence around Gogunsan-Gundo and the dyke. Around Yeon-Do, the maximum flood current directed more clockwise and occurred rather earlier. These changes of the $M_2$ current ellipse characteristics imply that the effects of the dyke construction reached the area connecting Mal-Do and Yeun-Do.

  • The sea dike at Gun-Jang Industry Area had been constructed recently and both inside and outside areas of the dike show harmonic behaviour. To examine stability against piping, 2 dimensional seepage analysis was executed using finite element method. To investigate the harmonic motion of water level, unsteady and unsaturated flow analysis is needed, and specially harmonic motion in the both areas from the dike should be considered, Water level recorder was used to obtain tidal harmonic data, and sieve analysis has been earried out so that the distribution of grain diameter of the dike material is clearly informed. The calculated velocity was compared with critical velocity.

  • HEC-RAS has been applied to simulate water level variation in the Ara waterway during the flood season. To support decision making necessary for operation of the hydraulic structures especially during the flood season, it is important to consider various factors such as water level of the Han River, Gulpo River, and tidal level of the west sea in conjunction with operation of the hydraulic structures such as the Gyulhyun Weir, the West sea gate, and pumping stations. Especially for operation of the west sea gate, the Rule-script option was employed to determine the opening height considering the variation of the water level in the waterway and the west sea simultaneously. For model verification, comparison of water level computed at the upstream and downstream of the regulation weir shows a good agreement with observed data measured during the flood event in September 2010. The HEC-RAS model developed in this study will contribute to support operation of the waterway during the flood season.

  • In order to investigate the factors of the control mechanism of somitogenesis, early chick embryos (H-H stage $8{\sim}13$) were treated with heat shock, ${\alpha}$-amanitin and cycloheximide and morphological changes of somite were examined by light microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. In normal chick embryo, somites were formed from the somitomere which preexisted in segmental plate. Somites were wrapped with extracellular collagen fibrils and connected with neural tube, notochord and ectoderm. And then, somites were differentiated to sclerotome, dermatome and myotome by the interaction of nervous tissue. Abnormal somites were observed after formation of six or seven so mites in heat shock treated group. Amounts of collagen fibrils were obviously decreased in this group. In cycloheximide treated group, most so mites were smaller and neural tube formation was incomplete. Chromatins were condenced and formed several heterochromatins in the nucleus of somite cells. Lipid like cytoplasmic dense mass and lipid droplets were also observed. Segmentation of somites seemed to be normal progress in ${\alpha}$-amanitin treated group. Center of somite, however, hollowed in longitudinal sectioned samples. These results suggested that so mites were already existed in the segmental plate as the form of somitomere. Segmented somites were contacted with neural tube or notochord and the somites were tightly connected with each other by the extracellular collagen fibrils which were secreted from neuroepithelium and somite cells. Somites are thought to differentiate into sclerotome, dermatome and myotome by these interactions.

  • Five cases of Diphyllobothrium latum infection were proved by collection of worms after treatment with bithionol, niclosamide or praziquantel, during 1975~1983. The patients were 4 males and one female aged 10~64 years residing in Seoul or Wando-gun, Chollanam-do, Korea. All of them remembered the history of eating several kinds of raw marine fish and 2 persons said they ate the raw mesh of perch, Lateolabrax japcnicus. Three amcnE them experienced abdominal pain, 2 natural discharge of a chain of segments, but none revealed any sign of anemia. The average egg size in stool varied $59~67{\times}41~48{\mu\textrm{m}}$ according to cases. The eggs were characterised by ovoid to elliptical shape, terminal operculum, and distinct abopercular protuberance. One naturally discharged segment (30cm) and 4 complete strobilae (320~680cm) with scolices obtained after treatments were examined. The morphological characters of proglottids such as rosette-form uterus with 3~6 loops, vaginal pore included in the cirrus sac, separated seminal vesicle from cirrus sac, etc. were all compatible with D. latum. These are the 7th~11th cases of D. latum infection proved by worms in Korea.

  • We described morphological characteristics of embryonic, larval, and juvenile period of the yellow puffer, Takifugu obscurus. We defined seven periods of embryogenesis the zygote, cleavage, blastula, gastrula, segmentation, pharygula, and hatching periods. The eggs were adhesive and spherical in shape. The egg yolk had numerous tiny oil globules. Hatching began about 280 hours after insemination at $17.0{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$ water temperature. Melanopores of star shape were seen on yolk, head and trunk during the pharygula and hatching period. The hatched larvae haying large yolk were $3.00\~3.54$ mm in size with $25\~26$ myomeres. The larvae completely absorbed the yolk materials and oil globules within 7 days after hatching and became post-larvae. Laval fish became juveniles within 60 days after hatching, and they reached $23.54\~30.12$ mm in total length and had fin-rays.

  • The purpose of this study is to compute the ground reaction forces during gait in the absence of force plates. The difficulties in using force plates for hemiparetic patients inspired us to initiate this study. Level-walking experiments were performed using a three-dimensional motion analysis system with synchronized force plates. Kinematic data were obtained from the three-dimensional trajectories of reflective markers. Gait events were also detected from the kinematic data. The human body was modeled as 13 rigid segments. The mass and the center of mass of each segment were determined from anthropometric data. Vertical ground-reaction forces obtained from the kinematic data were in good agreement with those obtained using the force plate. The computed and measured values of anterior and lateral ground reaction showed similar tendencies. The computation results can be used as the basic data for inverse dynamic analysis.

  • This study was conducted, based on the field survey and laboratory observations, to elucidate egg developmental processes and their characteristics of the Korean slender gudgeon, Squalidus gracilis majimae. For the experiments, the mature adults were collected at the Woongcheon-Cheon Stream and Boreung Reservoir located in Boreung City, Chungnam Province and eggs were obtained from the natural spawning area. Morphological characteristics of the egg and embryonic development were summarized as follows: The shape of the fertilized egg was spherical, adhesive and transparent. The fertilized egg was 2.9${\pm}$0.3 mm (n = 30) in mean diameter under water temperature of $26{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$, light white in color and had no oil droplets. After 20 minutes from the time of fertilization, a blastodisc was formed and divided into two cells at 48 minutes after fertilization. The blastular stage occurred at 5 hours 40 minutes after fertilization and the gastrular stage was detected at 8 hours 41 minutes after fertilization. The beginning of embryo formation was observed at 12 hours 58 minutes after fertilization and optic vesicles and 9 somites were discovered at 17 hours 05 minutes after fertilization. Differentiation of brains and embryo wiggling were observed at 37 hours 27 minutes after fertilization. Heart beating and the formation of melanophores in optic vesicles were detected at 44 hours 46 minutes after fertilization. The formation of pectoral fins and melanophores in the body were discovered at 50 hours 36 minutes after fertilization. Hatching occurred at 57 hours 49 minutes after fertilization. The newly hatched larvae were 3.3${\pm}$0.2 mm (n = 120) in total length. We believe that these results may contribute the species and population conservations under the situation of accelerated water pollution and the decreases of its diversity.

  • In situ rock mass is generally heterogeneous and discontinuous, with varying degrees of strength along the planes of weakness. The planes of weakness such as joints, faults, cracks and bedding planes, control the strength and deformation characteristics of the rock mass. Subsequently, the stability of underground opening depends upon the spatial distribution of discontinuities and their mechanical properties in relation with geometrical shape of openins as well as the mechanical properties of intact rock materials. Understanding the behaviour of a discontinuous rock mass remains a key issue for improving excavation design in hiかy stressed environments. Although recent advances in rock mechanics have provided guidelines for the design of underground opening in isotropic rock mass, prediction and control of deformation in discontinuous rock masses are still unclear. In this study, parametric study was performed to investigate the plastic zone size, stress distribution and deformation behavior around underground opening in a discontinuous rock mass using a continuum joint model. The solutions were obtained by an elasto-plastic finite difference analysis, employing the Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria. Non-associated flow rule and perfectly plastic material behavior are also assumed.
