  • We examined the state of Korean pomfret(Pampus echinogaster) in Korean waters and considered the management strategy of the stock based on the theory yield Per recruit. It is not facile to discriminate Korean pomfret distributed in Korean waters from silver pomfret (p. argenteus) due to the similarities in their external morphologies. For this rea- son, Korean pomfret has been treated in silver pomfret in fisheries statistics of Korea. In this study, we asserted Korean pomfret from pomfrets caught commercially by the morphology, from which we recognized that Korean pomfret took $60\~70\%$ in catch(in weight) and that the smaller the body length, the higher the proportion of Korean pomfret. Parameters estimated for Korean pomfret were as follows: natural mortality(M) = 0.6, fishing mortality(F) =0.924(mean value for $1986\~1988$), age at recruit to fishery($t_r$) =0.19 yrs, age at first capture($t_c$) : 0.49 yrs, and the rate of recruit of age-0 fish to fishery(Q) = 0.29. The results obtained from the theory of yield per recruit indicated that the present state of stock was below the optimum level of exploitation and that the control of fishing intensity rarely had an effect on the increasing of yield. Accordingly, we conclude that proper management can be made by increasing the current age of 0.49 yrs at first capture to 1.5 yrs.

  • Experiments were carried out to asses the impotance of environmental conditions upon the growth rate, length compositions seedling and spore liberation of a red alga Glacilaric verrucosa. The alga grown in water of low salinity mixed with fresh water shows better growth rate, lager length composition and excellent seedling, whereas the one vegetated in an area of tidal exposure shows a somewhat retarded growth rate and poor seedlings. The rate of growth Increases from August to October and begins to diminish from December continuing to diminish through February. Therefore the spore settling time extends from May to lune. Although the sun-drying method is the most eacient way of inducing spore liberation, further investigations are necessary in oiler to use this method for the application to artificial spore settling.

  • Spatial distribution patterns of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba in the Atlantic Ocean sector were seasonally divided into three or four regions; South George Island, Laurie/Coronation Islands and Livingston/King George Islands. Antarctic krill were caught from the surface to about 150 m in depth. The vertical distribution of catch per hour (CPUE) did not show much differences between the 10 m layers, but there were gradually poorer CPUEs as trawl depth increased. It was estimated from relationship between water temperature and CPUE that the Antarctic krill abundance was maximal at water temperatures of $0.8{\sim}1.0^{\circ}C$. The length compositions of Antarctic krill showed that female fish were, on an average, significantly larger than males. Relationship between carapace length and body length, and body length-body weight relationship were well fitted. Sex ratio was $60.3\%$ for male and $39.7\%$ for female with significant difference at the $5\%$ level.

  • The feeding habits of Coilia nasus were studied using 107 specimens collected from January to December 2005 in the coastal waters off Gori, Korea. The size of C. nasus ranged from 8.4 to 29.5 cm in standard length (SL). C. nasus was a carnivore that mainly consumed shrimps and copepods. Its diet also included small quantities of amphipods, euphausiids and chaetognaths. The feeding strategy graphical method reveled than C. nasus was specialized feeder and showed narrow niche width. Both small and large size class of C. nasus mainly consumed shrimps and copepods, and did not showed significant size-related changes in feeding habits. However, the mean number and weight of preys per stomach was higher than large size class than small size class.

  • A study has been made to find out a new method of calculating the survival rate of a fish population from length composition and growth equation. 1. In the steady state of the fish population, let the total mortality rate be z, the age of complete recruitment $\alpha$, and the number of $\chi$ year class $N_\chi$. Then ire obtain $$N\chi=N\alpha\;\exp\;{-z(\chi-\alpha)}$$ Let the oldest age in the catch be h, the average age between the age of complete recruitment and the oldest age in the catch $U\chi$. Then we have $$U\chi=\frac{a-b\;\exp\;(-z(b-a))}{1-\exp\;(-z(b-a))}+\frac{1}{z}....(1)$$ and then let be infinite. Then we obtain $$Z=\frac{1}{U\chi-\alpha....(2)$$ 2. Calculating numerical value of $U\chi$ from age composition table and growth equation and substitute in (1) or (2) for it, we may obtain the value of s and $\varrho^{-z}$. 3. This method is applied t a case of yellow croaker in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. The results are as follows: Total mortality rate 0.82595 Survival rate 0.43782 95 percent confidence interval 0.43767-0.43797.

  • Five species of marine cladocerans, Evadne nordmanni, Evadne tergestina, Podon leuckarti, Podon polyphemoides and Penilia avirostris, were found in Chinhae Bay during the years 1982-1983. Incidence of E. nordmanni(April-May) in spring and of E. tergestina(June-December), E. avirostris(June-November) in summer through autumn was noticed during the present study. But P. polyphem oides appeared throughout the year except February. P. avirostris was the most abundant species(21,491indiv./㎥), followed by P. polyphemoides and E. tergestina. Population of E.normanni and P. leuckarti was extremely poor and recorded to be less than 1,000indiv./㎥. Seasonal change in size composition was noticed in E. tergestina and P. avirostris. Increase of length was recorded in P. polyphemoides when water temperature lower than 15$^{\circ}C$.

  • Marine organisms were collected by the stow nets and the stow net on boat fisheries from April 2010 to November 2011 in the Han River Estuary and categorized as 126 species, 61 families, and 5 taxa. The species were consisted with 34 in Crustacea, 5 in Cephalopoda, 79 in Pisces, unidentified jellyfishes in Cnidaria, and Finless porpoise in Mammals. The major species were composed of fish and crustaceans in the Han River Estuary. The dominant species in Crustacea were Chinese ditch prawn (Palaemon gravieri), blue crab (Portunus trituberculatus), Ridgetail prawn (Exopalaemon carinicauda), and mantis crab (Oratosquilla oratoria), and those in Pisces were Korean anchovy (Coilia nasus), and Japanese grenadier anchovy (Coilia mystus). The length structures of the six dominant species have more than one mode in the Han River Estuary. It reflects that the species inhibit during a part of and/or whole lifetime in the Han River Estuary where they utilize as spawning and/or nursery grounds. Freshwater fishes were collected from station D where is the closest location to the Han River stream, and their appearances were well matched with the large amount of freshwater discharge due to flood periods. Principal components analysis (PCA) was carried out with species compositions and showed temporal and spatial differences by the variations of species.

  • This study investigated dietary habits and intra- and inter-specific food resource partitioning of co-occurring walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) and Pacific cod (G. macrocephalus) from the waters off the north-eastern coast of South Korea using stomach contents and stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) analyses. Both species are mesopelagic carnivores that consumed mainly benthopelagic crustaceans, but teleosts were also abundant in the diet of Pacific cod. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) ordination and permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) of dietary data revealed significant intra- and inter-specific dietary differences, i.e., food resource partitioning. Nitrogen stable isotope values (δ15N) were similar between walleye pollock and Pacific cod, but carbon stable isotope values (δ13C) were significant different, suggesting different trophic positioning. Canonical analysis of principal coordinate (CAP) ordination plot further demonstrated that differences in the type and range of prey ingested by the two species contributed such an inter-specific difference in the diet compositions. Ontogenetic changes in diet compositions were evident. As walleye pollock, they preyed more upon carid shrimps and cephalopods, but no such trend was observed in the diets of Pacific cod. While stable isotope values indicated that large-sized specimens of both species were significantly enriched in 15N relative to smaller conspecifics thus supporting these data. Consequently, in this study, both methodologies, i.e., stomach contents and stable isotope analyses, provided evidence of inter- and/or intra-specific dietary segregations and trophic niche partitioning between co-occurring walleye pollock and Pacific cod off eastern Korean waters.
