  • This study examined the relationship between parenting, the quality of peer relationships, and loneliness in adolescents. This study also examined the mediating effects of the quality of peer relationships on the relationship between parenting and adolescents' loneliness. A total of 506 1st and 2nd grade middle school students (261 boys and 245 girls) from the Seoul Metropolitan area completed measures of parenting, the quality of their peer relationships, and loneliness. The results indicated that adolescents' perceptions of parenting and the quality of their peer relationships were significantly related to their feelings of loneliness. Specifically, adolescents' perceptions of low levels of parental monitoring and high levels of abusive and neglectful parenting were associated with high levels of loneliness. Adolescents who perceived the quality of their peer relationships to be low reported high levels of loneliness. Further, the quality of peer relationships mediated the relationship between parenting and adolescents' loneliness; however, the pattern of associations differed for boys and girls. These findings suggest that both parent and peer relationship factors should be considered in combination in order to better explain loneliness in adolescents.

  • This study examined the mediation effect of life satisfaction between social support and loneliness. The subjects were two hundred and eighty fifth grade elementary school and second grade middle school adolescents in Seoul. The instruments used were questionnaires about loneliness and other factors relevant to loneliness. Social support factors existing in an adolescent's external environment include the support of parents, peers, and teachers. And life satisfaction as a psychological characteristic was concerned with the adolescent's sense of self, school life, home environment, and family relations. Data were analyzed by using the t-test, Pearson's correlation and regression. Major findings were as follows: (1) There were significant differences in parent and teacher support, satisfaction with school life, home environment, and family relations between early adolescents and mid adolescents. (2) Parental, peer, and teacher support, contentment with oneself, school life, home environment, and family relations were negatively related to the fifth-grade early adolescent's loneliness. Peer support and contentment with oneself, school life, and home environment were negatively related to the second-grade middle adolescent's loneliness. • This study examined the mediation effect of life satisfaction between aggression and loneliness. The subjects were two hundred and eighty fifth-year elementary school and second-year middle school adolescents in Seoul. Data were analyzed by using the t-test, Pearson's correlation and regression. Major findings were as follows: First, when it comes to aggressiveness, the fifth graders showed a significantly higher degree of personal attack, whereas the eighth graders were found to show more expression of anger. The fifth graders scored higher than the eighth graders in each subcategory of life satisfaction. No significant difference was found in the category of loneliness. Second, the fifth graders showed a positive relationship among verbal attack, personal attach, expression of anger and loneliness, whereas the eighth graders showed a positive relationship between expression of anger and loneliness. The two age groups, in turn, also exhibited some differences in the relationship between loneliness and life satisfaction. Third, we found that life satisfaction is a complete parameter between aggressiveness and loneliness in the fifth graders. In the case of the eighth graders, life satisfaction turned out to be a partial parameter between aggressiveness and loneliness. This perhaps indicates that adolescents with similar levels of aggressiveness might show different degrees of loneliness, depending on whether they have positive attitudes toward their lives and whether they feel satisfied with their lives.
