  • This paper confirms characteristics of lead isotopes of bronze artifacts excavated from Korea peninsula using 673 data classified according to Age, type and region. Lead isotopes data in Early iron ages are distributed in the southern Korean peninsula, but data in Joseon ages are concentrated in zone 3. Also Bronze artifacts excavated from Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Jeolla and Gyeonsang are manufactured using raw materials of the entire Korea peninsula, but bronzes excavated from North Korea aren't produced using raw materials of Gyeonsang provinces. Lead isotopes data will be able to find moving routes of raw materials and to separate the period of mixing and recycling of lead.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the academic achievements of these two eras with the content and performance of the bronze ware decorative patterns in the Song dynasty and age of the Minguo. We investigated the origins and developmental process of the bronze ware decorative pattern research in Chinese bronze research history and examined their academic value. Studying bronze ware is a scholarly study. In the past, research focused on classifying letters on bronze ware. However, research on bronze ware decorative patterns was neglected. Bronze ware decorative patterns are associated with archeology and mythology studies and provide important clues as to the imagination of ancient people. The study of bronze ware in China began with the Song dynasty. Since then, research on bronze ware has been revived in the Qing dynasty, although there has been no academic achievement regarding bronze ware decorative patterns. However, at the age of the Minguo, the achievements of bronze ware decorative patterns continued to follow the Song dynasty.

  • A number of the Bronze Age dwelling sites have been found and excavated in the Yoodoocheon, Onyangcheon and Baekseokdong basins. Two basins are located near Asan and Onyan in the Chungnam Province of South Korea. Baekseokdong is located in Cheonan, Chungnam. 207 dwelling sites are concentrated around the area of $1.3km^2$ in the Baekseokdong. 177 dwelling sites are sparse and distributed over the area of $1.3km^2$ in the Yongdoocheon and Onyangcheon basins. Most of the Bronze Age dwelling sites in those areas located on the hill. The hills have similar geomorphological environments except for slight differences in geological faces. This study analyzes geomorphological environments of the high-density residential zone of the Bronze Age in the Yoodoocheon and the Onyangcheon basins, and then compares them with the results in Baekseokdong. Study results show that high-density residential zone consists mainly of specific micro-landforms such as the Crest slope, the Crest flat and the Upper side slope, and southeast-facing aspect. A lot of Gentle slope lands were distributed in terms of terrain slope but it is far from specific geomorphological environments. This is not weighted in specific value. Our results show that the geomorphological characteristic derived from this study is major considerations to develop dwelling sites in the Bronze Age. This can be useful to discover the possible dwelling sites over other Chungnam hill regions.

  • Vegetation disturbance history of the Korean Peninsula from the Palaeolithic Age to the Koryo Dynasty (1392) has reconstructed by the use of various data sources. Active vegetation disturbance, which has begun during the Neolithic Age, seems to be more widespread on lowland and coastal areas in the early stages, but later expanded into inland areas. The ploughing of a field and the selective cutting of certain trees, such as oak trees, nettle trees and pine trees are noticeable, and eventually caused deforestation during the Bronze Age. The use of iron tools of the Iron Age has enabled the forest clearing to develope the dry fields. During the Three Kingdoms period (BC 57∼AD 918) extensive deforestation has maintained for the development of cultivated fields, as well as other activities, such as timber, lumbering, production of iron farm implement, ploughing by cattle. The encouragement of disafforestation on mountain slope and creation of terraced field during the Koryo Dynasty (918∼1392) has caused the deforestation over the country, along with the consumption of large amount of wood and timber for fire-wood, ship-building, mining, xylography and so on.

  • Understanding the distribution and location characteristics of the settlements is preliminary study on discovering the formation and extinction process of the settlements used information of archeological excavation. So far, most researchers have been concerned about the location-environment of the dwelling. However, this study focuses on the understanding of the geomorphological environments in high-density residential zone. The study area is located in Cheonan, Chungnam, South Korea. It is called the Baekseokdong Heritage Group, which has 205 dwelling sites in the bronze age. This study is considered micro-landforms of hillslope, slope, and aspect from a view of geomorphological environments. In the study area, The high-density residential zones, the bronze ages dwelling sites are concentrated, consists mainly of slope land between undulated plain and semi -gentle of crest slope or crest flat, and south-facing aspect(southwest-south-southeast).

  • The establishment of the Bronze Age is one of the most important achievements suggested by Korean archaeology shortly after liberation. There is no doubt that Moo-Byung Yoon is the representative figure, who refuted the ambiguous Eneolithic age (金石倂用期) created by Japanese scholars and settled the concept of the Bronze Age. In this article, the author takes a new look at Yoon's institutional role in studying the Bronze Age in Korea. Until now, Yoon's representative achievement has been his typology of the Slender dagger of the Korean Peninsula. However, it is not less important that Yoon also established the Bronze Age concept with the excavation of a dolmen and a Bronze Age subterranean dwelling in Oksok-ni, Paju during the 1960s. Of course, it was not a personal assignment for Yoon. He was aided by Prof. Kim Won-Yong's work, who had introduced newly excavated materials from North Korea and China; these materials gave some insight for establishing the Bronze Age concepts in the 1960 and 1970s. Kim's suggestion about the possibility of a Korean Bronze Age led to Yoon's refined typological study on Korea's bronze wares. However, Yoon's excessive schematic classification of artifacts and reliance on the Japanese chronology became an obstacle for making the Korean Bronze Age isolated from East Asia. As a result, it is regrettable that his research led to the "cultural lag" phenomenon of Bronze Age research. Meanwhile, Japanese archaeology, which had influenced Yoon, also faced a major change. In 2003, the Japanese archaeological community revised the Yayoi culture's beginning around the 1,000 BC. This means a shift in the perception that we should understand Japan's Bronze Age in the context of the East Asian continent. Of course, it is not appropriate to reevaluate or denigrate Yoon's research from the current view. Rather, it is necessary to recognize the limitations of Yoon's time and present a new path to research by combining the archaeological tradition of refining research on the relics he maintained with a new chronological view and a macro view of East Asian archaeology. This is why we should take a new glimpse into Yoon's research.

  • Bronzes excavated from a Gulsansa temple site in Gangneung were investigated in order to study the production of technology and provenance in this area. The bronze artifacts were discovered to consist of copper-tin or copper-tin-lead alloys using chemical analysis(EDS and EPMA). The excavated bronzes were manufactured using a casting or hammering process, and a bronze belt was gilded with gold foil. The provenance of 25 bronzes was studied using lead isotope analysis(TIMS and LA-MC-ICPMS). The results reveal the use of raw materials found near the excavated site. The object of this study was to investigate the manufacturing techniques and provenance in Gangneung without the need for a lot of data. Our results will contribute to the study of Gulsansa and bronze artifacts in Goryo(12-13th century).
