  • This experimental study deals with the characteristics of LCD or PDP TV set noise, which are differ form those of CRT TV set. These characteristics are most important for establishing the effective method to reduce noise level, searching for the appropriate exposure level and evaluation method of LCD or PDP TV set noise. This study adopt two measurement method to specify the power level of LCD or PDP TV set noise in anechoic room(ISO 3741) and reverberation room(ISO 3745) . Comparing with each results of the two method, the reverberation room method is more simple in measuring and calculating the power level. And the subjective response test are carried out to select the pair of appropriate adjectives to present the characteristics of LCD or PDP TV set noise. The pair of 17 adjectives are selected from the 168 adjectives which are used in presenting the sound and noise form literature.

  • The audible tones of switching system employed in the country at present do not only disagree with CCITT Recommendation Q35, but also are different in the specifications and the sense of hearing. Such a discord with the specifications and the sense of hearing causes a subscriber and an operator to confuse. In this paper characteristics of the sense of hearing of them and the accuracy of tone specifications are studied and novel unified audible specifications are proposed. And it is showed that the digital tone generation of digital switching systems can be implemented readily, using a ROM.

The Research of Railway Noise through Auditory Experiments Focused on the Autonomic Nervous System and Cardiovascular System (청감실험을 통한 철도소음의 자율신경 및 심혈관계통 영향도 연구)

  • According to the conventional studies on the noise and cardiovascular effect, railway noise is better associated with hypertension and adverse cardiovascular events than road traffic noise. But the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated the hypothesis that exposure to acute railway noise would the unfavorable effect of cardiovascular and autonomic system in healthy young subjects. Using a randomized, sham-controlled cross-over design, ten subjects were assigned to receive either an exposure to high speed train noise (84 dB) for 30 minutes or a control condition (non noise), separated by two days. Blood pressure, heart rate, augmentation index and heart rate variability as indices of cardiovascular and autonomic system function were measured at baseline, during, and recovery from two trials. The results show that exposure to acute railway noise significantly increased diastolic blood pressure and augmentation index, which may cause of adverse cardiovascular effects.

  • Until now, a home appliance mostly has revealed physical quantities created by the standpoint of engineers, by using the A-weighted sound pressure level and the sound power. It is, however, obviously impossible to characterize a complex sound with a single number. Many parameters must be considered. In addition to loudness, we must take into account frequency and amplitude variation over time, spectral balance, tonality, and many other attributes. Thus, in this research, the general tendency of consumer psychology was investigated for the refrigerator's sound. The noise from the refrigerator was evaluated by not only the simple sound pressure levels but also the consumer's sense of hearing. And also, in order to improve the quality of sound through the design change, the consumer's evaluation was analysed and related to the engineering quantities. With the several design changes, finally the most silence refrigerator in the world was developed with considering the consumer's hearing of sense.

An Study on the Sound Attenuation and the Improvement in Hearing Condition of Fire Alarm Device in Apartment Buildings (공동주택 화재 경보음 전달특성과 개선방안 고찰)

  • In many fire emergencies, the auditory fire alarm signals are very important to save the occupant's life. But as the sound insulation of building elements has been improved, it is more difficult for occupant to recognize the fire alarm signals when the audible fire alarm worked. This is the first study to show the sound attenuation of audible fire alarm device in apartments. We measured and analyzed the sound attenuation level in seven units. The result showed that it was not sufficient to detect the sound from the fire alarm device in bedrooms. Whether the fire alarm device worked or not, the differences of sound level in bedrooms were below 1$\sim$10 dBA. To give the minimum sound level 60 dBA in bedrooms, the proper sound levels from alarm device installed in livingrooms were suggested using computer simulation.

  • The task of introducing sounds leads to the realization of a comfortable acoustic environment and the design of good soundscape. This paper aims to rate the preference of environmental sounds suitable to the public spaces such as park, garden, bus terminal, urban street. And aims to search for the methodology how to select the introducing sounds by subjective and objective procedures. Seventeen kinds of introducing sounds were rated by nine adjectives in the presence of visual site informations. Also adequate sound levels were calculated by adjusting the volume of introducing sounds in the presence of the background sounds and visual informations. The results of psycho-acoustic experiments are as follows. 1. Proposal of various introducing sounds were evaluated to be possible at the rather calm natural park. 2. The introducing sounds which have opposite visual image or already existing at the place were evaluated not adequate to the sound circumstances of the place. 3. By the sounds with the same meaning, the identity of the street and the improvement of sound circumstance can be obtained.

Evaluation of Floor Impact Sound Isolation in a Dry Floor System (건식 바닥구조의 바닥충격음 차단성능 평가)

  • Floor impact sounds from two different floor systems were measured. One of the two floor systems is a dry floor system (with 150mm concrete slab) and the other is a standard floor system (210mm concrete slab). Real impact sources such as jumping and running of children were used as well as standard impact sources (bang machine, impact ball and tapping machine) to evaluate sound Isolation of the two floor systems. Subjective evaluations of the floor impact sound isolation performance for the two systems were also conducted by the methods of 3 scales & 9 categories, paired comparison and semantic differentials. Measurement results indicate that floor impact sound isolation performance of the dry floor was better than that of standard floor in both cases of real and standard impact sources. The subjects in auditory experiments also evaluated the dry floor as a better sound isolation system.

  • A convolution with HRTF DB and the original sound is generally used to make the method of sound image localization for virtual speaker realization. But it can decline localization by the confusion between up and down or front and back directions due to the non-individual HRTF depending on each listener. In this paper, we study a virtual speaker using a new HRTF, which is grouping the HRTF around the virtual speaker to improve localization between up and down or front and back directions. To effective HRTF grouping, we decide the location and number of HRTF using informal listening test. A performance test result of virtual speaker using the grouped HRTF shows that the proposed method improves the front-back and up-down sound localization characteristics much better than the conventional methods.

  • A statistical annoyance model to railway noise at platform was proposed by jury evaluation test performed in hearing laboratory. ITX-Saemaeul and Mugunghwa were chosen as the noise sources of the test, and announcement sound was included to simulate real situation. Logistic regression analysis produced %HALAB curve. Hosmer-Lemeshow test and classification accuracy test were used to verify the model's statistical significance. It was shown that the model which was generated from relatively small number of samples is statistically significant.

  • In recent days, on account of the cultural development and the improvement of citizen's consciousness level, it is the real situation that the construction of small-scaled Multi-Purpose Hall where various cultural events could be performed, is on increasing. However, since the most of Multi-Purpose Hall had been designed and built up without any consideration on Acoustic Factor, many problems are on occurring thereat. Since those small-scaled Multi-Purpose Hall have been mostly used with the finishing material which contains a high degree of Acoustic Absorption indiscreetly, both diffusion and reflection of sound are not establishing properly, and because thereverberation of sound is very low, in case of musical performance by musical instrument, its sound hears too arid and stiff, there occurs some acoustic defect such as it becomes difficult for music appreciation with sufficient timbre, so that the capability improvement on the matter is urgently requiring situation. Therefore, this Study has tried to seize the satisfaction level about the small-scaled Multi-Purpose Hall after betterment of the acoustic performance by appraise the acoustic condition of the Hall, using Auralization Technique that can experience Virtual Acoustic Field regarding to the small-scaled Multi-Purpose Hall as its object. It is deemed that such research result could be practically used as the useful material which enables to bring a reduction effect of construction cost as well asenhancement of the acoustic performance through its presupposition?control on the acoustic problem when construction or renovation of other similar small-scaled Multi-Purpose Hall in the future.
