  • Director Lee Chang-dong's movies deal mainly with the matter of subject as a human individual. He attempts to show how the subject as a human individual is structured in society through the characters in the movies. It can be seen that a considerable part of this is connected to the matter of subject which is maintained by Michel Foucault, a modern French philosopher. Foucault contends that the subject has lost its identity in the huge structure of society and has become the object. The subject is alienated within the power. The subject is also divided into normality and abnormality in the social structure. Particularly, the movie directed by Lee Chang-dong shows an individual containing consideration toward self and Foucault also showed his attempts in his later years to newly interpret the subject in the context of consideration toward self. Through this thesis, I attempt to examine the matter of the subject that the film director Lee Chang-dong and Foucault have in common.

  • In the information-oriented society of 21st century, the added value of creativity has never been so important to need any further discussion. This research investigates an implication of metonymic activities in early childhood Convergence arts education as a basis of the creative education by analyzing EduDrama, the program which helps children acquire creativity through metonymic activities. To this end, this research proposes a desirable way of early childhood arts education by organizing limited situation of early childhood education in Korea with domestic and foreign cases applying metonymic activities. Despite actively conducted studies on arts education led by existing arts management field in Korea, arts education research for early childhood is still not entirely satisfactory. Therefore, this research makes clear the value of arts education using metonymic activities provided during early childhood on the assumption that the added value of our life depends on the creative human resource of 21st century.

  • Records regarding to magnetism in the written Korean history were surveyed. In this article, we depicted how the magnetism (magnet) was understood by the public in the past in the Korea. The records about magnetism could be chronically categorized into three eras; 1) an era of recognizing a magnetic characteristics, 2) era of recognizing a magnetic pole, and 3) era of acquiring a modern knowledge. The written history of the Silla dynasty (BC57-AD935) revealed that a magnet was produced in this era. However, no record about magnet was found in the written history of the Goryo dynasty (918-1392). It was revealed that throughout the Korean history the interest in the magnetism (magnet) was emphasized most in the Josun dynasty (1392-1910). The magnetism (magnet) was most widely exploited in a geomancy. A magnetic compass was used widely to find a merciful direction and place in everyday life. In the era of Josun dynasty, a magnet was exploited as a magnetic compass for a navigation over the sea. An interesting usage of the magnet in the Josun dynasty was found in the pharmaceutical purpose.

  • This paper compares and contrasts the concept of nature and the theory of evolution held by leading synthetic biologists and transhumanists in the post-genomic era. Synthetic biology, which emerged in the early 2000s, aims to design biological systems that perform specific functions with the two key concepts of "rational design" and "directed evolution". However, synthetic biology has also raised serious concerns about the creation of man-made biological materials and the manipulation of the direction and speed of evolution. It is no wonder that transhumanists, who dream of creating new, enhanced human species, have welcomed the arrival of synthetic biology. How, then, can we deal with the nature reinvented by synthetic biology? By what means can one justify research that may affect the process of evolution? What intellectual resources do synthetic biology and transhumanism share in common? What influence would the new trend of commercialization of science and technology exert upon the development of synthetic biology? Addressing those questions, this paper argues that the moral authority of nature can be restored in this post-genomic era.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between philosophy of education and comparative education, and suggest what relationship between these are desirable. To this end, this paper examines the connection between philosophy of education and comparative education, shows trends in philosophical approach to comparative education, and suggests a desirable direction for comparative education should proceed in terms of philosophy of education. Philosophy of education needs a comparative dimension as much as comparative education needs a philosophical dimension. From the philosophical perspective, many researches should directed their research towards philosophical comparative education for the mutual enhancement of comparative education and philosophy of education. In conclusion, philosophers of education should actively conduct research, keeping both the identity of philosophical education and enlarging comparative education. The research should not be confined to either philosophy of education or comparative education.

  • When we lose our memories or when our self-identity becomes blurred, we may feel as if our mind has split into multiple minds. If someone makes another 'me' by copying my body and mind, how should two conscious 'I's change their credences? In this article, we present a new thought experiment that can be called the 'Two Adams Problem'. This thought experiment represents a piece of philosophical inquiry that speculates on the nature of self-consciousness information that 'I am awake now'. On Sunday evening, as soon as Adam falls asleep, the philosopher Roro makes another Adam by copying Adam's original body and mind. They sleep separately in another room. Within a minute, Roro throws a fair coin. If the coin lands heads up Roro wakes just one of the Adams up on Monday. If the coin lands tails up Roro wakes both Adams up. On Monday, at least one of the Adams will wake up. To what degree ought they believe that the outcome of the coin toss is heads? We will argue that the correct answer to this question is 1/2.

  • Recently, a lot of articles and writings defending animal right and welfare are introduced into our society. For example, P. Singer's Animal Liberation, T. Regan's The Case for Animal Rights, and J. Rachels's Created From Animal are representative writings of animal ethics. In his books, P. Singer maintains that all animals are equal. T. Regan insisted that animals as a subject of a life have rights. J. Rachels's moral individualism is that how an individual may be treated is to be determined, not by considering his group membership, but by considering his own particular characteristics. Interestingly, they use common argument called 'argument from marginal cases' to justify their theoretical positions. If we can disclose the weakness of the argument, all kinds of animal ethics which defend animal right and welfare such as animal liberation theory, animal rights theory and moral individualism will collapse. In this paper, I will examine the concrete contexts in which Singer, Regan and Rachels make use of the argument. And I will critically examine the argument. Lastly I will show that the attempt to deny the difference of species is unsuccessful.

  • The purpose of this paper is to critically investigate John McDowell's naturalism, and propose an alternative direction of inquiry in order for his naturalism to have a more explanatory cogency. McDowell's main project is to settle a philosophical anxiety that has made traditional philosophy waver between mind and world. If one stands on the world side, he would appeal to "the unintelligible given," and on the other hand, if one stands on the mind side, he would fall into anarchistic relativism. In order to relieve the traditional philosophical anxiety, what McDowell has in mind is to reintroduce an empiricistic intuition into a pragmatic conceptual setting. Although McDowell is successful in that it could avoid methodological difficulties with which traditional philosophy has faced, his discussion seems to give rise to a charge of "the Myth of the Given," presenting perceptual judgement as a model of judgement. I propose that McDowell has yet to account for the relation between perceptual and abstract judgements in a more cogent way, which has been far better explained by the experientialist account of the nature and the structure of the embodied experience.
