Stress analysis of bogie frame by using the finite element method has been performed for the various loading conditions according to the UIC (International Union of Railways) Code 615-4. Multiaxial fatigue damage models such as signed von Mises method and typical critical plane theories were reviewed, and multiaxial fatigue analysis program (MUFAP) has been developed. Fatigue analysis of bogie frame under multiaxial loading was performed by using MUFAP and finite element analysis results. The procedure developed in this study is considered to be useful for the life prediction in preliminary design stage of railway components under multiaxial loading conditions. 3-dimensional surface modeling, mesh generation and finite element analysis were performed by Pro-Engineer, MSC/PATRAN and MSC/NASTRAN, respectively, which were installed in engineering workstation.

As a consequence of the standardization process developing in Europe, on April 2005 the new European standard EN 13749 was issued by the European standardization body CEN. The norm EN 13749 standardizes and develops the requirements already present in UIC leaflets for test verifications and define all technical requirements for the acceptance process in order to achieve a complete satisfactory design of the bogie. The aim of the norm is to define the complete design process of new railway bogies. It includes design procedures, assessment methods, verification and manufacturing quality requirements. In this study, fatigue analysis of the bogie frame is investigated comparing different approaches between conventional methodology and simulation results based on the VPD(Virtual Product Development).

In development of the bogie, the fatigue strength of the bogie frame is an important design criteria. Also the bogie frame weight reduction is required in order to save energy and materials. In this study. structural analysis of bogie frame by using the finite element method has been performed for the various loading conditions according to the UIC standards and it has been attempted minimize the weight of bogie frame by back-propagation neural network and genetic algorithm. Finite element mesh generation and finite element analysis were performed by Altaire Hyper Mesh and ABAQUS.
Bogie is mainly consisted of the bogie frame, suspensions, wheels and axles, braking system, and transmission system. The complex shapes of the bogie frame and the multiaxial loading condition induced in real operation make it difficult to design the bogie frame against the fatigue. In this study, multiaxial fatigue criteria were reviewed. Stress analysis of the bogie frame has been performed for the various loading conditions according to the UIC Code 615-4. Magnitudes of the stress amplitude and mean stress were estimated based on the stress analysis results to simulate the operating loads encountered in service. Fatigue strength of the bogie frame was evaluated by using the constant life diagram of the material. 3-D surface model ling, finite element meshing, and finite element analysis were performed by Pro-Engineer, MSC/PATRAN, and MSC/NASTRAN, respectively.
Stress analysis of the bogie frame by using the finite element method has been performed for the various loading conditions according to the results of vehicle dynamics analysis. Multiaxial fatigue analysis methods such as signed von Mises method, and typical critical plane theories were reviewed, and margin of safety for fatigue is defined. Multiaxial fatigue analysis program to predict the margin of safety of bogie frame under non-proportional loading conditions has been developed by using a commercial command language. Fatigue analysis of bogie frame under multiaxial loading was performed through this program and finite element analysis result. The procedure developed in this study is considered to be useful for the fatigue strength analysis in preliminary design stage of railway components under multiaxial loading condition.
This paper describes the results of structure analysis and load test of a bogie frame. The purpose of the test is to evaluate the safety and functionality of the bogie frame under maximum load. The bogie system consist of the bogie frame, suspensions, whee/sets, a brake system and a transmission system. Of these components, the bogie frame is the major component subjected to the vehicle and passenger loads. The evaluation method used the JIS E 4207 specifications throughout static load test. The test results have shown the bogie frame to be safe under design load conditions.
Maglev is the vehicle which can run in levitated condition by the electro-magnets, and propelled by linear induction motors. The Maglev is divided in two parts such as carbody and bogies, and the bogies are the driving device of the vehicle. The frame of the bogie must endure many loads occurred in the operation of the vehicle. So the bogie frame is designed and manufactured in the view of good safety and maintainability. The methods of design of frames are developed in regards of stresses and weights of structures. In this research, the extrusion of bogie frame is re-designed by the process of topology optimization with the ANSYS. By this process, the optimal shape of extrusion is acquired and additional optimization researches would be required in the view of size and shape of the members in the extrusion.
Recently, the bogie frame weight of Light Rail Transit system has been reduced in order to save energy and materials. However, this light weighted vehicle structure is very important to verify the fatigue strength at the development stage. Bogie system consists of bogie frame, suspensions, wheel-sets, braking system and transmission system. Among these components, the bogie frame is most significant component subjected to the whole vehicle and passenger loads. In this study, the bogie frame for the New LRT power car is evaluated to the static and fatigue strength. And the evaluation method is used the LRT Performance Test Standards Specification throughout the FEM analysis and static load test. The static and fatigue test results for the LRT bogie frame of power car has been appeared very safety and stable for the design load conditions.
Maglev vehicle has two parts a vehicle body and a series of bogies. The vehicle body is connected through a pneumatic suspension on the bogie frame operating loads, vehicle weight and passengers, repeatedly during the service life. The bogie frame plays an important role in sustaining the weight of the vehicle body and controlling the magnets in the correct alignment to meet requirements of stable running on railway. It is also subjected to the levitation and guidance force and propulsion force generated by electromagnets and linear induction motor (LIM) respectively. To guarantee a vehicle system, it is necessary to identify a load test method with proper loads that the vehicle is expected to experience while in service. In this paper, a test method was proposed to verify the structural safety of vehicle body and bogie frame that are applied to an EMS(electromagnetic suspension)-type urban Maglev vehicle considering in case of not only running on the ground but also levitated running.

Fatigue design and evaluation of welded joints are typically carried out by weld classification approach in which a family (theoretically infinite) of parallel nominal stress based S-N curves are used according to joint types and loading modes as well as extrapolation-based hot spot stress. Traditional finite element methods are not capable of consistently capturing the stress concentration effects on fatigue behavior due to their mesh-sensitivity in stress determination at welds resulted from notch stress singularity. The extrapolated hot spot stresses tend vary, depending on the element sizes, types, joint types, and loading mode. however, the equilibrium-equivalent structural stress method(E2S2) has been recently developed through several joint industry projects as a robust method to analyze welded components using finite element analysis. This method has been proven effective in correlating a large amount of published fatigue test results in the literature such as master S-N curve and has used for evaluating the fatigue life of welding components. In this study, fatigue analysis of the welding bogie frame is examined using E2S2 method with master S-N curve.
