In 1980's, the concrete bridge decks were constructed with 4cm wearing surface layer instead of asphalt concrete overlays. After about 15 year service periods, deteriorations were appeared on the surfaces of highway bridge decks. Various field NDTs and lab tests were done to analysis the cause of the deterioration on the concrete deck surface. The main cause was the corrosion of rebars with thinner concrete top cover than the design value. The rebars with thinner concrete top cover was earlier corroded by penetrated chloride ions. If the appropriate top cover could be achieved, the bare concrete bridge decks can be used without earlier deteriorations.
In lifetime estimation, the FEM analysis method is proposed for predicting corrosion failure time of concrete structures exposed to sea-water. This study shows that the corrosion rate of rebar in artificial pore solution can be transferred to the corrosion rate of rebar in concrete using the relationship between pore volume and concrete volume by Jennings' model. And this study considered the pitting corrosion effects of reinforcement bar on corrosion failure analysis, rebar size to cover depth and nonlinear crack analysis. These analysis results have good accordance with the experimental results of Williamson's work. This methodology can be applied to lifetime prediction procedure of reinforced concrete structures and also gives more reasonable results of concrete cover failure time estimation of reinforced concrete structures exposed to sea-water.

This paper presents the experimental results concentrically reinforced concrete tension members and compares cracking behavior of amorphous steel fiber and normal steel fiber reinforced concrete members. Two kind of steel fibers were included as a major experimental parameter together with the six cover thickness to bar diameter ratio ($c/d_b$). The presence of amorphous steel fibers effectively controlled the splitting cracks initation and propagation. In the amorphous steel fiber reinforced specimens, no splitting cracks were observed that becomes higher with cover thickness to bar diameter ratio is 2.0. Crack spacing of the each specimens reinforced with amorphous steel fibers and normal steel fibers becomes larger with the increase in cover thickness, and also measured maximum and average crack spacing are significantly smaller than current design code provision. Based on the measured crack spacings, a relationships for predicting the crack spacing is proposed using the measured average crack spacing in amorphous steel fiber reinforced concrete tension members.

This paper presents the tension stiffening behavior from experimental results of each 6 amorphous steel fibers and normal steel fibers reinforced direct tensile specimens with the main variables such as cover thickness to bar diameter ratio. A tension stiffening effect for steel fiber reinforced RC tension members improve on the increase in cover thickness, and also amorphous steel fiber is usually superior to normal steel fiber. The reinforcement of steel fibers controlled the splitting cracks and led to significant increase in the tension stiffening effect. In particular, if cover thickness is more than twice the bar diameter, the amorphous steel fiber reinforced specimen is controlled the splitting crack and increased the tension stiffening effect. And, the tension stiffening effect of amorphous steel fiber reinforced concrete tension members is different to current structural design code provision.

In this study, the anchoring performance of 57mm headed bars anchored at the external beam-column joint under cyclic loading was evaluated. A total of 6 external beam-column joint test specimens were planned, and anchorage performance was evaluated by setting concrete compressive strength, side covering thickness, lateral reinforcement ratio, and fracture type as major experimental variables. As result of cyclic loading test, it was found that the factors that had the greatest influence on the anchoring capacity of the large-diameter headed bar anchored at the joint were the side cover thickness and the transverse reinforcing bar. It was confirmed that the 57mm large-diameter headed bar anchored at the external beam-column joint showed sufficient anchoring capacity even under cyclic loading.

Generally, significant amount of reinforcements are used in nuclear power plant structures and it may cause several potential problems during the construction. In particular, it is more difficult to pour concrete into structural member joint area than other areas because of the significant congestion of the joint area due to a lot of hooked bars, embedded materials, and other reinforcements. The purpose of this study is to solve these problems due to the reinforcement congestion by using the high-strength(ASTM A615 Gr.80) headed deformed bars of large-sized diameter(43 mm & 57 mm) in nuclear power plant structures as a alternative of standard hooked bars. In order to use headed deformed bars effectively, It is necessary to find the method how to relax limits on their use while maintaining or improving the anchorage capacity. Therefore, this study will analyze the results of tests planned to evaluate the influence of the restricted variables, such as bar size, yield strength, clear cover thickness.

The nuclear structures are composed of large diameter bars over No.36. If the hooked bars are used for anchorage of large diameter bars, too long length of the tail extension of the hook plus bend create congestion and make an element difficult to construct. To address those problems, headed bars were developed. Provisions of ACI 318-08 specify the development length of headed bars and ignore the effect of transverse reinforcement based on the background researches. However, if headed bars are used at the cut-off or lap splice, longitudinal reinforcements, which are deformed in flexural members, induce tensile stress in cover concrete and increase the tensile force in the transverse reinforcement. The object of this research is to evaluate the effects of transverse reinforcement on the anchorage capacity of headed bar so anchorage test with variable of transverse rebar spacing was conducted. Specimens, which can consider the behavior at the cut-off, were tested. Test results show that failure of specimen without transverse reinforcement was sudden and brittle with concrete cover lifted and developed stress of headed bars was less than half of yield strength of headed bars. On the other hand, in the specimen with transverse reinforcement, transverse rebar directly resist the load of free-end so capacity of specimens highly increased.

It is found that as contents of chloride ion and age increase, area of corrosion also increases. Inare increased to 1035 days from 730 days, slope of increase of corrosion area is greatest. Non-rust inhibitor specimens show corrosion area of 8~35 times more than rust inhibitor specimens and anticorrosive effects by application of rust inhibitor can be confirmed. When chloride ion is not contained, corrosion control effects of steel reinforcing according to increase of thickness are found, but specimens having chloride ion show no regular tend of thickness and corrosion due to complex problems such as reverse diffusion of chloride and test errors.
