  • RC column bent piers represent one of the most popular piers used in highway bridges. Seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) column-bent piers under bidirectional seismic loadings was experimentally investigated. Six column bent piers were constructed with two circular supporting columns. Test parameters are different transverse reinforcement and loading pattern. Three specimens were loaded with bidirectional lateral forces which were main cyclic loads in the longitudinal direction and subcyclic loads in the transverse direction. Other three specimens were loaded in the opposite way. Test results indicated that lateral strength and ductility of the latter specimens were bigger than those of the former specimens. Plastic hinge was formed with the spall of cover concrete and the fracture of the longitudinal reinforcing steels in the bottom part of two supporting columns for the former three specimens. Similar behavior was observed in the top and bottom parts of two supporting columns for the latter three specimens.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the inelastic behavior of hollow reinforced concrete bridge piers under varying axial load. The role of the variable axial load is very important in the ductility, strength, stiffness, and energy dissipation. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The proposed numerical method for the inelastic behavior of hollow reinforced concrete bridge piers under varying axial load is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • This study represents results of performance-based fragility analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge. Monte carlo simulation is performed to study nonlinear dynamic responses of RC bridge. Two-parameter log-normal distribution function is used to represent the fragility curves. These two-parameters, referred to as fragility parameters, are estimated by the traditional maximum likelihood procedure, which. is treated each event of RC bridge pier damage as a realization of Bernoulli experiment. In order to formulate the fragility curves, five different damage states are described by two practical factors: the displacement and curvature ductility, which are mostly influencing on the seismic behavior of RC bridge piers. Five damage states are quantitatively assessed in terms of these seismic ductilities on the basis of numerous experimental results of RC bridge piers. Thereby, the performance-based fragility curves of RC bridge pier are provided in this paper.

  • Seismic design of newly built bridges can be considered and carried out during construction process according to the revised road bridge design standard issued recently. While for the existing reinforced concrete bridge priers under service before new standard implements, their resistance capacity against lateral seismic loading is inferior. In this research, seismic reinforcing for existing bridge piers by nickel-chrome alloy bar has been analyzed. Based on the established model by MIDAS program, the behaviors of bridge piers including deformation and stress with and without nickel-chrome alloy reinforcing bars have been compared and discussed under lateral seismic loading. And the advantages of using nickel-chrome alloy bar as seismic reinforcement over other materials, such as good performance, good economy etc. have been demonstrated by comparison with other researches. Also the anti-seismic efficiency of nickel-chrome alloy reinforcing bars has been confirmed by MIDAS modeling analysis.

  • Recently, the probability of collision accident between vehicles or vessels and infrastructures are increasing at alarming rate. Particularly, collision impact load can be detrimental to sub-structures such as piers and columns. The damaged pier from an impact load of a vehicle or a vessel can lead to member damages, which make the member more vulnerable to impact load due to other accidents which. In extreme case, may cause structural collapse. Therefore, in this study, the vehicle impact load on concrete compression member was considered to assess the quantitative design resistance capacity to improve, the existing design method and to setup the new damage assessment method. The case study was carried out using the LS-DYNA, an explicit finite element analysis program. The parameters for the case study were cross-section variation of pier, impact load angle, permanent axial load and axial load ratio, concrete strength, longitudinal and lateral rebar ratios, and slenderness ratio. Using the analysis results, the performance based resistance capacity evaluation method for impact load using satisfaction curve was developed using Bayesian probabilistic method, which can be applied to reinforced concrete column design for impact loads.

  • This study is performed to investigate the behavior of multi-column piers and to evaluate the seismic performance. In this study, 3 types of scale model piers with 2-column are designed and tested by quasi-static load in both longitudinal and transverse directions. Each type of model consisting of 2 specimens has different reinforcement details in the lap splice of longitudinal bars and amount of transverse reinforcements. This paper reports that the ductility of the model in transverse direction is rather higher than in longitudinal direction because of formation of several plastic hinges and that the ultimate displacement and the energy absorbtion capacity are enhanced by using continuous longitudinal bars instead of lap-splice ones. And it is confirmed that relatively large amount of ductility can be achieved by providing sufficient lap-splice length and transverse reinforcements with end hook even if longitudinal bars are lap spliced in the base of pier.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of hollow reinforced concrete bridge column systems with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction. The proposed reinforcement details have economic feasibility and rationality and make construction periods shorter. A model of hollow reinforced concrete bridge columns was tested under a constant axial load and a quasi-static cyclically reversed horizontal load. As a result, proposed reinforcement details for material quantity reduction were equal to existing reinforcement details in terms of required performance. The companion paper presents the experimental and analytical study for the performance assessment of hollow reinforced concrete bridge column systems with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction.

  • The behavior of bridge column under multi-directional loading as well as uni-directional loading need to be studied because bridge columns will be subjected to the multi-directional cyclic loading during a strong earthquake. To evaluate the capacity of columns, uni-axial cyclic loading tests and bi-axial alternate cyclic loading tests were carried out. The number of cycles of alternate bi-axial loading were determined considering the ratio of natural frequencies in two orthogonal directions. From the test results, strength degradation and ductility reduction were observed in biaxial loading conditions. Their rates were found to be more rapid in the loading pattern that was determined considering the different natural frequencies.
