  • As advanced earthquake analysis/design methods such as the nonlinear static analysis are developed, it is required to estimate precisely the cyclic behavior of reinforced concrete members that is characterized by strength, deformability, and capacity of energy dissipation. However, currently, estimation of energy dissipation depends on empirical equations that are not sufficiently accurate, or experiment and sophisticated numerical analysis which are difficult to use in practice.0 the present study, nonlinear finite element analysis was performed to investigate the behavioral characteristics of flexure-dominant RC members under cyclic load. The effects of axial force, arrangement of reinforcing bars, and reinforcement ratio on the cyclic behavior were studied. Based on the investigation, a simplified method to estimate the capacity of energy dissipation was proposed, and it was verified by the comparison with the finite element analyses and experiments. The proposed method can estimate the energy dissipation of RC members more precisely than currently used empirical equations, and it is easily applicable in practice.

  • Concrete plasticity models fol the analysis of reinforced concrete members in plane stress are studied. The proposed plasticity model for reinforced concrete provides a unified approach combining plasticity theory and damage models. It addresses strength mhancement under rnultiaxial compression. and tensile cracking damage. The model uses multiple failure criteria for compressive crushing and tensile cracking. For tensile cracking behavior. rotating-crack and fixed-crack plasticity models are compared. As crushing failure criterion, the Drucker-Prager and the von Mises models are used for comparison. The model uses now and existing damnge models fbr tension softening, tension stiffening. and compression softening dup to tensilt. cracking. Finite element analyses using the unified method are compatxd with existing rxpcrimcntal r.esults. To vei.ify the proposcd crushing and cracking plasticity models, the experiments have load capacities govc11.nc.d either by compressive crushing of'concrete or by yi~lding of' reinforcing steel.

  • Provisions for the redistribution of negative moments in KCI 2007 and ACI 318-08 use a method for continuous flexural members subjected to uniformly-distributed gravity load. Moment redistributions and plastic rotations in beams of reinforced concrete moment frames subjected to lateral load differ from those in continuous flexural members due to gravity load. In the present study, a quantitative relationship between the moment redistribution and plastic rotation is established for beams subjected to both lateral and gravity loads. Based on the relationship, a design method for the redistribution of negative moments is proposed based on a plastic rotation capacity. The percentage change in negative moments in the beam was defined as a function of the tensile strain of re-bars at the section of maximum negative moment, which is determined by a section analysis at an ultimate state using KCI 2007 and ACI 318-08. Span, reinforcement ratio, cracked section stiffness, and strain-hardening behavior substantially affected the moment redistribution. Design guidelines and examples for the redistribution of the factored negative moments determined by elastic theory for beams under lateral load are presented.

  • Recently, research about Near-Surface-Mounted Rertofit (NSMR) method has been being widely performed as a method for retrofit of RC structure using FRP. This method requires additional work to make grooves during retrofit but makes it possible to improve retrofit effect and reduce the attack by environment. In this paper, the retrofit effect of NSMR method, especially the method using FRP plate instead of bar is investigated through experiment. Six RC beams were made and retrofitted using by FRP plate following the planned methods; Surface-Bonding Retrofit (SBR), NSMR without debonding region and NSMR with debonding region. Flexural capacity of all specimens was evaluated by beam test with simple support condition. As a result, NSMR method with FRP plate had more improved structural capacity than SBR method. The calculation process of ACI 440-2R can be used to predict the member retrofitted by NSMR with FRP plate with consideration on the three anchorage failure mechanism.

  • Generally, reinforced concrete structures exposed to the outside temperature are affected by freezing and thawing process during winter and early spring. These freeze-thawing process can lead to the reduction in durability of concrete as cracking or surface spalling. This paper is to study the flexural behavior of RC beams exposed to freeze-thawing environments. To compare the difference in flexural behavior of RC Beams, limited tests were conducted under different types of Longitudinal steel ratio and freeze-thawing cycles. For this purpose, fourteen small-scale RC beams ($100mm{\times} 100mm {\times}600mm$) were strengthened in monotonic and cyclic loadings, subjected to up to 150, 300 cycles freeze-thawing from $-18{\sim}4^{\circ}C$. It is thought that experimental results will be used as basic data to evaluate flexural behavior of RC beams exposed to freeze-thawing.

  • Fiber-Reinforced Cement Composite (FRCC) is known to be effective in mechanical effects such as cracking width control as well as steel anticorrosive effect. In this study, we examined about steel anticorrosive effect by using metal fibers including zinc fibers by accelerated corrosion test. Moreover, it was examined for salt penetration, sacrificial anode effect and formation of electric circuit that was significant effect on the steel anticorrosive effect. As a result, Steel anticorrosive effect was confirmed with mixed metal fibers on FRCC. Especially, In the case of zinc fibers with a high sacrificial anode effect, it was confirmed that the suppression of penetration and corrosion resistance were improved.

  • The general soil nailing method, which is currently used domestically and internationally to stabilize the slopes of sandy slopes, is to form a kind of gravity-type retaining wall by drilling the ground and grouting it with a single steel bar. This method can reduce construction costs, ease of construction, relative strength and displacement, and is highly efficient. The difference between grouting and rebar adhesion to the yield pullout force and the difference between the amount of deformation in relation to the same pullout resistance was analyzed through field tests to identify engineering excellence, and in terms of construction cost, the reduction effect was evaluated by analyzing the difference in the number of drillings and the impact on the overall construction cost, such as material cost, when the same strength constant is applied to the ground with the same resistance.

  • Corrosion of reinforcement is the main cause of damage and early failure of reinforced concrete structures. The corrosion is mainly progressed by the chloride ingress. In this paper, an experimental study is executed to investigate the effect of concrete properties and testing methods on the coefficients of chloride diffusion. Also, it is surveyed the relationship between total chloride and free chloride in concrete. According to this experiment results, W/C ratio and testing method affect chloride diffusion coefficient of concrete. As W/C ratio is increased, diffusion coefficient in concrete is also increased. Diffusion coefficient obtained by each testing method show the different values, respectively. The model equation of diffusion coefficient with W/C ratio is proposed.

  • The purpose of this study is to experimentally evaluate the structural behavior of built-up type column consisted of angles and y-shape steel sheet forms for filling concrete. This column for minimizing form working and reinforcement placing is able to improve capacity of construction and reduce the term of works. Thirteen 1/3 scaled columns were fabricated. The main variables are 1) effect of angles and y-shape steel sheets of fabricated columns, 2) slenderness of column, 3) eccentricity of column. The results show that the experimental capacity of built-up type column is similar to theoretical one by reinforcement concrete design code. The maximum loads increase according to the rate of angle to cross section of column.

  • In this study, the small-scale collision experiments using a pendulum principle were carried out to evaluate the safety of the reinforced concrete building selected as a tsunami evacuation building due to the collision of the waterborne debris represented by ships. The experimental parameters were set as impact velocity, mass and length of the drifted ship. In this paper, the maximum impact force, impact duration, impact waveform and restitution coefficient affecting building response were investigated in detail. As a result, the impact force waveforms were distributed as a triangle in most of the experimental results, but became closer to a trapezoid as the length of the collision specimen increased. This is the very important result in calculating the momentum (impact waveform area) affecting building response, Furthermore, the restitution coefficients were constant regardless of the impact velocity, but they varied depending on the mass and length of the waterborne debris. However, the restitution coefficient for the mass per unit length of the waterborne debris can be evaluated.
