  • The beam-column connection is the critical design section of general steel frame structures owing to the behavioral characteristics of the structural system. As most members of a frame structure are composed of rolled section beams, the cross-section of the beam members is governed by the negative bending moment near beam-column connections. Such a design concept leaves a redundant load-carrying capacity at the positive bending regions of the beam members leading to design inefficiency. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to redistribute the beam end moments and reduce the stresses at the beam-column connections for a more efficient design of steel frame structures. In this study, reaction-moment prestressing method (RMPM) was proposed for the innovative design and construction of steel frame structures. The RMPM is a prestressing method utilizing the elastic bending deformation of a beam member induced by temporary prestressing for the distribution of a relatively large bending moment to other sections for the efficient use of the beam section. By the application of the RMPM, the negative bending moment at the beam-column connections can be significantly reduced, ultimately leading to possible use of smaller beam sections. Through a series of model tests and numerical analyses of steel frame structures, the moment distributing effect and feasibility of the RMPM was verified.

  • In a steel structural system, noncomposite form deck one-way slab is the plate element supported by four-edged steel beams with unequaled stiffness. However, design criterion has analyzed the one-way slab as the continuous beam. Because the end beams that support the one-way slab have elastic supports t hat cause different deflections according to the support conditions and locations, the bending moments corresponding to the support ic support effect is not considered in the design criterion. Accordingly, to conduct a reasonable estimation of approximate moment coefficients considering the unequaled elastic support conditions, this study analyzes and estimates various models with varia bles for the ratios of live load to dead load and pattern arangements of live loads and span lengths. The analytical methods considering the finite three-dimensional plate element, the two-dimensional elastic support and the infinite stifnes suport are performed.

  • Employing the classical beam theory for the design of welded steel moment connections has been brought into question by several researchers since the 1994 Northridge earthquake. In this study, the load transfer mechanism in various welded steel moment connections is comprehensively reviewed mainly based on recent studies conducted by the writer. Available analytical and experimental results showed that the load path in almost all the welded steel moment connections is completely different from that as predicted by the classical beam theory. Vertical plates near the connection such as the beam web, the web of the straight haunch, and the rib act as a strut rather than following the classical beam theory. The shear force transfer in the RBS connection is essentially the same as that in PN type connection. Some simplified analytical models that can be used as the basis of a practical design procedure are also presented.

  • Steel intermediate moment frames (IMFs) have been generally used as seismic load resisting systems (SLRSs) of a building to provide resistances against strong ground shaking. However, most of low and mid-rise steel buildings in Korea were constructed during pre-seismic code era or before the introduction of well-organized current seismic codes. It has been recognized that the seismic performance of these steel IMFs is still questionable. In order to respond to such a question, this study quantitatively investigates the seismic capacities of steel IMFs. Prototype models are built according to the number of stories, the levels of elastic seismic design base shear and the ductilities of structural components. Also, the other prototype models employing hysteretic energy dissipating devices (HEDDs) are considered. The collapse mechanism and the seismic performance of the prototype models are then described based on the results obtained from nonlinear-static and incremental-dynamic analyses. The seismic performance of the prototype models is assessed from collapse margin ratio (CMR) and collapse probability. From the assessment, the prototype model representing new steel IMFs has enough seismic capacities while, the prototype models representing existing steel IMFs provide higher collapse probabilities. From the analytic results of the prototype models retrofitted with HEDDs, the HEDDs enhance the seismic performance and collapse capacity of the existing steel IMFs. This is due to the energy dissipating capacity of the HEDDs and the redistribution of plastic hinges.

  • This paper summarized the results of a full-scale cyclic seismic testing on four reduced beam section (RBS) steel moment connections. Specifically, these tests addressed a bolted web versus a welded web connection and strong versus medium panel zone (PZ) strength as key test variables. Specimens with medium PZ strength were designed to promote balanced energy dissipation from both PZ and RBS regions, in order to reduce the requirement for expensive doubler plates. Both strong and medium PZ specimens with welded web connection were able to provide sufficient connection rotation capacity required of special moment-resisting frames. On the other hand, specimens with bolted web connection performed poorly due to premature brittle fracture of the beam flange at the weld access hole. Unlike the case of web-welded specimens, specimens with cheaper bolted web connection could not transfer the actual plastic moment of the original (or unreduced) beam section to the column. No fracture occurred within the beam groove welds of any connection in this testing program. If fracture within the beam flange groove weld is avoided by using quality welding procedure as in this study, the fracture issue tends to move into the beam flange base metal at the weld access hole. Supporting analytical study was also conducted in order to understand the observed base metal fracture from the engineering mechanics perspective.

  • This study investigated the behavior of out-of-plane skewed moment connections that were designed as IMFs, as per the Korean standards. A total of 14 finite element models were constructed with the consideration of two types (single- and double-sided connections) and four levels of skew angle (0°, 10°, 20°, and 30°). The results indicated that the skewed connections considered in this study met the acceptance criteria for IMFs given by the codes. However, the load-carrying capacities of skewed connections were decreased as the skew angle increased. For the connection with a skew angle of 30°, the peak load was noted to be 13% less and the energy dissipation capacity could be 26% less than that of non-skewed connection. In addition, because of the skewed nature, the stress distribution in the skewed beam flange near the connection was asymmetric and the stresses were concentrated on the beam inner flange. Column twisting induced by the skewed configuration was very small and negligible in the beam and column combination considered in this study.

  • In the companion paper (Model Development), an analytical model estimating the available rotation capacity of fully restrained beam-column connections in special steel moment-resisting frames was proposed. In this paper, two limit states were considered as the connection rotation capacity criteria: (i) strength degradation failure when the strength falls below the nominal plastic strength due to the local buckling of the beam's cross-section and (ii) low-cycle fatigue fracture caused by plastic strain accumulation at the buckled flange after only a few cycles of high-amplitude deformation. A series of analyses are conducted using the proposed model with two limit states under monotonic and cyclic loadings. Beam section geometric parameters, such as flange and web slenderness ratios, varied over the practical ranges of H-shapedbeams to observe their effect on the rotation capacity and low-cycle fatigue life of pre-qualified WUF-W connections.

  • This paper presents test results on reduced beam section (RBS)program addressed panel zone (PZ) strength as the key variables. PZ strength has been much debated issue for several decades. A desirable range of PZ strength has not yet been proposed despite the fact that a significant amount of RBS test data is available. Test results from this study and by others showed that panel zones could easily develop a plastic rotation of 0.01 radian without causing distress to the beam flange groove welds. At this deformation level, the amount of beam distortion (i.e., buckling) was about one half that developed in strong PZ specimens. A criterion for a balanced PZ strength that improves the plastic rotation capacity while reducing the amount of beam buckling is proposed.
